Open Thread: Game 107 - A's vs. Royals (cont)

The A's have tied the game at three on an RBI hit by Bobby Crosby. Our very own Ziggy appeared in three scoreless innings (and recorded three DPs!), and Street pitched the ninth. The A's go to the bottom of the ninth, trying to win the game.

Let's Go Oakland!
Win it now, we dont want extra baseball today
WALK OFF MOJO THREAD!!!

Pwease?

Crosby walkoff.

Calling it now. It’s just a weird day like that.

Then, because Colletti sees it, he’ll give up Kemp, Laroche, and DeJesus for Street, Crosby and Ellis.

Yup.

Colletti will do all that....

just because he watches Bobby walk back to the dugout?

His butt commands respect.
If only Kim Ng were the one

making deals for the Dodgers.

So...

Is it time to say bye to any of these players? We don’t play again until August 1st….

Crosby...

“He’s had some big RBIs for this team in the past…”

Done
Actually...

I looked back and I got it wrong…

“Guy that has driven in some big runs for the A’s over the years”

That was when

they used larger scoreboard numbers.

looks like I havent missed anything...

Big Hurt on deck on friday I hear fom ESPN…that’s good news.

That walk is still useful because

it allows the pitcher Bankston to make the last out.

calling Crosby scoring the winning run

fantasy go wild!

Man these linked threads are the best

Gracias., eh?

So the Ziggy streak is now 30, right?
That's what I heard.
3 IP, 3 DPs

30 scoreless.

somebody light up a firecraker underneath BB's foot.
I cant wait to play soccer in Dublin at 6:30...

and forget this sport ever existed

Ireland or California?
nice steal Crosby

one base down, two to go

Anybody got a second firecracker???
Yay Bob!

And Cuzzi.

free baseball?

Time for a cup of tea
I miss Dale
me too

never thought i’d say that

Wes has a good idea at the plate.

When you’re going good that’s a hit. When you’re in a slump, you can’t buy a hit.

Chevron is all about giving you more...
Ziggy should be the spokesperson for Aladdin Bail Bonds

“We get you out; we get you through it.”

Well, I don't know what else to do.

Dishwasher mojo didn’t work. Pasta mojo isn’t working. I’m going to have to start working soon, we’ll see if work mojo works.

I tried it earlier....

I dont suggest it

It’s not

Maybe playing-with-cat mojo will work.

I’m doing it now. Wouldn’t advise it.

Try chocolate mojo

Or ice cream mojo.

No...

there’s lots of ice cream AT the Coliseum right now, it hasn’t worked there… it won’t work at my place, either.

try some give me $10 mojo
Fried chicken anyone?
Mmmmm!

Starving!

Ill try some fried chicken mojo
Does anybody else realize that the only players in the starting 10

to spend the entire 2007 season on a big league club are Ellis, Crosby, and DFA….

and Crosby missed half the season.

Ladies and Gentlemen I present the Sacramento Rivercats of Oakland/Fremont

crosby did not miss half the season. 107 – 96 = 11 games missed.

But he missed 69 games in 2007
Nice job Street

walking the leadoff hitter

Eh, it's the last game before the deadline....

Huston is determined to remain an A. Why I don’t know.

No chance of trading him now
Blood pressure

Rising…

kbtoys.... dont steam my tag line...

its all I got going for me

Don't steam it?

Should he have boiled it instead?

Dry Cleaned... no steamer
apologies all around
excuse me while I walk myself out the window and get ready to jump off the

12th floor.

swept by the royals and we're not winning in boston.

cant wait til 2009!

Steven Herman takes a walk...

...down Huston Street

Somewhere in there is a song waiting to be written.

I want to see that play.

:(

Thank god

for Zook

I'm so glad we have Street

He’s so valuable

He reminds me of Eckersley
I wish I could see it...
Huston does not want to be traded, after Friday, he will not give up another run

all year.

Hopefully

it’s because they stop putting him in.

Yay Kurt!
Great play there by the sound of it
He made it great, by not seeing the ball initially and then scrambling to make a diving catch.
Im surprised Fosse isnt tearing Zook a new one....

for not being Jason Kendall

I heard beane isnt going to make any moves by tomorrow
Yeah, this team looks ready for the stretch run.
Yea im so excited about this team

NOTTT

you know someone who knows what Billy Beane is going to do???
(Trying to find a happy place)

Sooo, with Ziggy’s streak at 30 he’s officially passed Rollie Fingers in the A’s record books. He recorded 29 scoreless in ‘71. Ziggy now trails only Paul Lindblad who went 32 in ‘75.

who has the all time? Herhisher?
yep

59 in 1988

Drysdale has second right?
yep

he went 58 in ‘68

aye

58 in ‘68

This game is still on?
Painfully,

yes.

Is it too early...

to want Ziggy as closer?

If he were closer, he couldn't have come in

to get the DP that kept it tied.

Yes, he needs to pitch every inning.
You beat me to it.
I'd put Blevins in

and use Street as a setup guy. I dunno, just talking out of my ass out of frustration.

Damn...even a guy with a gimpy groin is hitting better than most of the A's
I'm really glad my groin's never been gimpy.
...yet...

there’s old age and prescription options to avoid this malady

Oh, ffs, Bob.

Barn door… Horse… Out…

Oh look...

Street gave up a run.

See you in Boston, Huston
Street gave up any chance we had of trading him

because he sucks

You would have to pay a team to take this gascan

What do other SB Nations teams talk about?
How crappy their managers and closers are.
God, I love Huston Street

I’m so glad he is on the team. Just imagine how bad we’d be without him.

He'd instantly improve any other teams' bullpen

That’s my favorite

Yet he would
Where's PaulThomas when I need him?

I’d like to be reassured that Street is a top 10 reliever in baseball please.

nooo Flashfire thinks so to
Stat guys are so useful in these times
I was trying to find stats that indicated that, but I didn't find any.

How the heck does PT think Huston’s top 10?

K/BB ratios and stuff like that
K/BB as a reliever

2007 – 14th in MLB
2008 – 41st in MLB

Those rankings are for Huston BTW
Sorry. If you put in a minimum 20 IP

2007 – 8th in MLB
2008 – 25th in MLB

So its official we’re never going to get rid of Huston Street are we?

So THIS is what its like to be a Giants fan.... huh.
no, your team has to have a 50+ age average.
Well, THAT was easy!

I love Street, I actually don’t think he sucks, but he’s pissing me off a lot lately.

Actually, I do think he sucks

as a closer. I think he’d make a good relief pitcher.

He wouldn't be so scary as a closer

if we could ever have any confidence that “even if he blows the save, our hitters can still come back and score.”

Shouldn't the mentality of a closer be more like:

“I’m in. Game over…biatch!” If he really has the “even if I blow a save mentality” he really shouldn’t be a closer.

I was referring to OUR mentality...
If your mentality had been better, we would have won this game
doesnt look like it
We might catch Seattle at this rate
Wow. Geren actually pulled him?

Yeah… not getting traded.

Word just came in about an impending trade involving Huston

Otherwise he would’ve stayed in

The problem was Street was furiously checking blogs on his Blackberry

when he should have been concentrating on locating his slider.

"Don't make trade rumors if they're not true!"

Stupid A’s fans…...........don’t we kow Huston doesn’t like it????

who are those 15 closers that people said are worse than Huston Street?
and are any of them actually still pitching for a living?
Joke's on you! That wasn't a save situation!!!
Just a game on the line situation
Bad Closer?

ol "duck lips"
*mumbles something about acting and closers but is to depressed to enunciate*
*mumbles something about acting and closers but is to depressed to enunciate*
I jinxed it.
oh rats, we are down now.
Man, this is depressing

A’s should have won this game a long time ago….losers…....!

+1

This season is increasingly difficult to want to watch. It reminds me of those sweet mid 90s teams I convinced myself were better than they were

how does this go again? does it have to be a live chicken for a sacrifice?
I would bet money that Street is satisfied that he has sucked enough to remain

on this team.

He is supposed to be a professional but I am sure he knows he secured his place on this team with that performance

We can still non-tender him after the season.
You know, you should shut the f--- up with comments like that

In my ever-so-humble opinion.

Whoa, wait a minute.

I intentionally deleted the “That theory is completely full of shit” comment that I typed first, and I didn’t have to?

Go for it - I'm sorry, but it's one thing

to suggest that a player isn’t good and another to suggest he isn’t trying as hard as he can to compete successfully. Huston Street has been one of the A’s best relievers in the 4-year period of 2005-2008, and he’s a competitor. How good a closer he is, that’s an open question. “Better than any other options we have at the moment” is a pretty fair answer, though.

That's *beyond* ridiculous.
Which is why I'm surprised anyone took it seriously
I'm sure he's not joking.
you were thinking that too?
In my opinion

I am angry that he sucks enough not to be traded. I wanted to see him traded along with a few others for a few more prospects.

That is why I put, he is supposed to be a professional and I sure as such he didn’t try and lose but don’t tell me he would not feel happy at least subconsciously about it. That is human nature.

Maybe I worded that wrong but I am sure he will be happy not to be traded.

He said he'd like to stay -

That doesn’t mean he wanted to give up a run in the 10th today.

This pop fly strategy isn't working as well late in the game
Just make sure you sate that it's "your opinion".

Otherwise Hustom might get offended….....:0

Boston has to be waiting with fork & knife in hand
Did you say Boston, or Blanton?
Why not a spork?
this all just means

Street gets traded in the winter rather than this week…

I can't really blame him....

maybe the housing market will have recovered by then.

time to call up the future bc the present is en effing joke.
Great.

So I go to check the final score, just in time to think, “Woah, it’s in extras! ... Crap, it’s over!”

Ugh.

Seriously.

Time to go commit a crime...

Can someone contact Aladdin Bail Bonds on my behalf in about two to three hours? Thanks.

First time since 1988

Royals sweep in Oakland. Way to go team! Keep that white flag raised high!

We won the pennant that year.
And...

we might finish behind Seattle this year.

Come on. We're 12.5 games ahead.
Yeeaaahhh....

You might not want to run with that…

Admittedly

it won’t be easy, but I sure didn’t think the Royals would come in here and only trail for less than half an inning in 3 games, either.

Thanks for the laughs...lets do it again sometime...
Below .500 for the first time since 3-4? Is that right?
Thank god it's over

I’ll be spared the pain of the game going another 3 innings while the A”s continue to strand all of their baserunners…......oy!

So that's how a closer shuts the door

I was starting to wonder what that looked like

I’m over this game and work, so i’m heading home

Isn't there one team out there that wants Street?

How about Street for a case of Corona and and an all you can eat taco bar??

Dammit

Stupid Royals, Stupid A’s, and here I thought there was no stupid in baseball.

You are confused, it's no "crying" in baseball but what's the difference?
Maybe since Eric doesnt play for us anymore...

his brother can get up on the bus and give a inspiring speech during this slump!

alrighty, trying to remain focused on the one bright spot

Here’s the list of 40+ Scoreless IP: www.baseball-almanac.com

Anyone know where to find a list that includes 30+?

The radio station's tagline for game broadcasts:

“The game… and welcome to it.”

It sounds really snarky this season.

It's better than the other one:

“Leaving 14 runners on base is…100% baseball!”

Does anybody know where the A's are?
Can we pay our players $300 to grow out their facial hair again...

eerrrrr those who can?

Is this what Rock Bottom for the season looks like?

It seems like it.

Nah

Check back after this upcoming 10 game road trip to see what that’s like.

I was thinking September...
Check back Friday.
So this means we can sweep the Red Sox this weekend!

Who’s with me?

Yes!

That’s what I go with!
Swuhuhuhuhueeeeeeeeeppp!

YES! I like the way you talk!

AND go on to a HUGE August and September, shocking the baseball world!

42-13 gives us 95 wins. We need the cardboard cut out of Rachel Phelps

Unfortunately we’ve got John Fisher.

Big Hurt comes back.

At least there will be one legit slugger in the lineup!

Hopefully,

He feels it necessary to pad his HOF stats.

Even if he fouls a pitch off his leg

in the first AB, and has to leave the game!

I think im going to go root for the Southern Oregon A's
Good luck - they moved to Vancouver, WA
Billy Beane probably sold them too....
We did get back four provinces that look promising for 2023
Let's be positive!

The A’s always play the Red Sox tough. Then it’s four in Toronto, who aren’t very good, and three at Detroit, who aren’t very good either. I think this is rock bottom and with Big Frank coming back, things will get better. I predict a 7 or 8 game win roadie. And truthfully, August and September have a lot of Mariners on the schedule, so who knows? Let’s go Oakland!

Well at least Hannahan and Bankston and Emil Brown

are getting some experience so that…so that…

...Hmph.

how do the AAA's do against the Sux?
John Perrotto at Baseball Prospectus reports:

“Multipe baseball sources say the Red Sox are on the verge of sending disgrunted left fielder Manny Ramirez to the Marlins in a trade for a package of three players that included low Class A Greensboro outfielder Mike Stanton, an 18-year-old who is hitting .275/.351/.569 with 26 home runs in 96 games.”

More home runs for Marlins
