To recap the last few days: Fiorentino (OF), Melillo (2b), and DiNardo (P) all taken off the 40-man roster (DFA'd). Chavez and Calero reinstated from the 60-day DL and added to the active roster; AthleticsNation contributor Brad Ziegler added to the 40-man and active roster. Buck and Carlos Gonzalez recalled from AAA and ready to start in the outfield tonight for the A's.
Eight players currently on the 15-day DL for the A's: Swooney, Sweeney, Andrew Brown, Casilla, Devine, Donnie Murphy, Frank T, Denorfia.
The most intriguing starting lineup the A's have trotted out this year:
Not to be picky, but the only way I'd like it better is with Hannahan at first base.
Today marks the two-month anniversary of this comment:
Barton is going to have an OPS of .650 in two months, and he may very well be back in Sacramento.
Barton's current line : .322 OBP, .328 SLG, .650 OPS. But unfortunately that prediction was only half right.
Tonight's opposing starting first baseman, Chris Shelton , was at .354/.429/.625 - a 1.054 OPS - before joining the Rangers, where he's posted a .734 OPS over 22 games. He was also released and available for free this past offseason, illustrating the point that passable offense at first base should be very easy to come by.
In somewhat related news, Buck ended up spending exactly 20 days optioned down in AAA, meaning that the A's gained an extra year of contractual control over him. Instead of being a free agent at age 28 after the 2012 season, the A's will have him under control for 2013 at age 29.
I think it would be wise for the A's to send Barton down for 32 days at some point this season to realize the same long-term benefit.
The A's currently stand at 29-25 through 54 games, exactly one-third of the way finished with the season. That is an 87-win pace; right at the threshold where every precious win counts. Let's go A's!

Wow. Just wow.

Deep thoughts...shallow mind
Beyond all the excitement of all the call-ups, I think people are forgetting that the A’s have been a highly competitive, but all these injuries could have severe (IMO) negative ramifications on the A’s competitiveness over the next month. I’m almost willing to say this current 25-man active roster is an inferior product.
I could definitely see them having a June-swoon (not swooney). Maybe all these moves puts things into perspective to remind all us ANers that this is a rebuilding/reloading year and not to have dreams of contending for the division title.
I’m excited to see all these guys come up but also disappointed at the same time. I thought, before all the recent injuries, we had a real shot to stay in the race. Losing the Big Hurt, just when he was starting to warm-up. Losing R. Sweeney, just when he was improving defensively and staying consistent at the plate. Losing Devine, just when he was starting to look like a dominant reliever and the future Street replacement. M. Sweeney was doing a great job relieving Barton. Chavez I’m sure will be rusty for quite some time. CarGon is an unknown quantity. You just don’t know if you will get the 07 Buck or the 08 version. Calero, OUCH – enough said. Ziegler, you just don’t if his dominany MiLB numbers will translate to the big show. Am I crazy to feel like things are slipping away? You can never tell with the A’s…I hope they prove me wrong and one day we’ll all look back to this as a positive fork in the season.

you are forgetting that the main thing that's kept us in contention, thats kept us "Good"
is the one part of the team thats healthy right now: the starting rotation.

Wow! You're right! Travis Buck DID spend exactly 20 games in Sacramento!
(as long as you don’t count those 4 extra games he played there)

Emil's not that bad in LF. For some reason he's a lot worse in RF.
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
Emil Brown in the 5th spot makes me throw up just a little
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Against a lefty, it's okay. Against a righy, not so much.
Nick - May 30, 2008
Well, I'm not necessarily saying Geren is wrong
It’s just not something I want to see as a person who wants the A’s to win baseball games.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
it's not OK
Emil doesn’t really have a significant L/R platoon split.
monkeyball - May 30, 2008
I thought he had a noticeable L/R split over his career.
Was I wrong about that?
Nick - May 30, 2008
meh
He’s got an advantage vs LHPs of about 10 pts AVG, 45 pts SLG, 15 pts OBP. And that’s only over ~675 ABs total lifetime vs LHPs.
And this season (even smaller sample size), he has NO power vs LHPs.
The problem is that he just isn’t any good.
monkeyball - May 30, 2008
I agree he isn't really any good
I’m less pessimistic sending him out there against a lefty than against someone like Millwood, though.
And thanks for checking the stats!
Nick - May 30, 2008
Even worse, he's probably the best option.

Nico - May 30, 2008
Before we get too down about the DLs,
R. Sweeney’s DL trip is precautionary and because they don’t want to play short-handed for several days (isn’t that what we normally complain about?) and Devine’s is also a good conservative decision on a minor injury. I’m more concerned about Thomas because the day he returns we play interleague ball for two weeks – so he’s virtually lost for a month.
Nico - May 30, 2008
Thomas out for a month
does mean Cust at DH for most of that month. Silver lining.
And if CarGon and Buck can hit, the impact of Thomas being out won’t be too severe.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
I don't see Cust DHing much in interleague games :-(
Nico - May 30, 2008
Well I meant until then
How many NL park game do they play? 6? 9?
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
You're right, it's only 6
For some reason I thought it was more. Woo hoo!
Nico - May 30, 2008

Yeah, but Laird just clanked it

Nick - May 30, 2008

Laird’s inability to catch a curve at the knees.

asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008
heh
he did well when they first moved him up – i think that’s why they decided to keep him there. maybe it’s time to reconsider though.
schmifty - May 30, 2008
Who do you replace him with though
I just thought about it. Barton cant hit right now, Zook sucks right now. Maybe Cust in the 2 hole
asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008

jshaw25 - May 30, 2008

Jeter?

WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
The answer to that is "Jeter"
Nico - May 30, 2008
Yes, Bob, please overreact and
keep fiddling the lineup based on 10 game samples!
Nico - May 30, 2008
I don't think Crosby should hit #2
But the guy I want there (Barton) shouldn’t either. There’s no point in juggling around everybody. Just make the lineup and let people hit.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
He has down it every other time
how many lead off hitters have the A’s had in this short season?
asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008
So you cant say Geren
doesnt use small samples. He used Buck, then Zook and then Jack H. all in less then 40% of the season
asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008
He doesn't need to tinker constantly
I’m fine leaving him there.
Nick - May 30, 2008

WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
And that no-hitter a few years ago (wasn't he with Philly then?)
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Yeah he looks good
but Cust swinging the bat might help
Trainman - May 30, 2008
I really wish you'd start to understand that Cust's productivity is entirely based on him NOT swinging at so many piitches
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Taking an occasional hack at
two-strike pitches down the middle wouldn’t be a bad adjustment, though.
Nico - May 30, 2008
That pitch wasn't really a two-strike pitch down the middle
Millwood throws a fastball that starts out inside and tails back over the plate. It’s really not an easy pitch to hit. And in his first at bat, the umpire called one similar a ball. This one was a strike, but the pitches weren’t that different.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
I love Cust

Nick - May 30, 2008

thejd44 - May 30, 2008
I understand that when he is down 2 strikes
it is a good idea to swing if the pitch when it is a strike instead of looking
Trainman - May 30, 2008
He's actually pitching a bit like Duke
Not blowing the ball past people, but spotting a tailing fastball and throwing a big curve.
Nick - May 30, 2008
It's funny, I was watching the Sac RiverCats yesterday on FSN Northwest and...
I was watching Travis and CarGon and I was like that would be awesome if they got called up tomorrow! and gUESS WHAT THEY DID!!!!
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 30, 2008
With all the Cust love in MLB
how come more guys dont hit like Cust? Just wait for a single pitch in a certain part of the strike zone. Then swing as hard as you can?
asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008
Very few guys have his power
Or his ability to recognize and then crush that single pitch.
Plus, I’m not sure that’s what Cust actually does. He just seems to be aware of the fact that hitting a weak groundout on an 0-2 pitcher’s pitch isn’t any different (usually) than striking out because you let a close one go.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008

He’ll learn when he becomes more wily
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
When he starts positioning himself instead of having Waller tell him where to play for every batter?
mikev - May 30, 2008
Sweeney wouldn't have gotten that close.
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
he's too pretty to drive! lol
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 30, 2008
These dumb King Tut beards are getting to be worse than those Dylan-90210/Brady Anderson sideburns a while back
Nick - May 30, 2008
Victor Buono is smiling somewhere
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
as is Laird Cregar
monkeyball - May 30, 2008
Agreed. John Kreese may have used such a strike out call.
Never mind.

1 run in 25 innings?
must suck to be an A’s pitcher at times.
asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008
what's wrong with Devine?
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 30, 2008
depends on what time you asked the A's front office
Sore forearm
Strained forearm
Inflamed elbow
monkeyball - May 30, 2008
He's an A's pitcher...
Symptoms include elbow inflammation.
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
Symptons may also include
severe headaches and nausea
jpl - May 30, 2008
If Geren leaves you in for longer than 4 hours, consult your doctor
monkeyball - May 30, 2008
Mark, honey, quit scaring me when you run.
Poppy - May 30, 2008
right? he's having problems rounding 1st
drink409 - May 30, 2008
That looked scary for a guy with a healthy hamstring
Nick - May 30, 2008
Yay Mark!
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
Come on Barton, you are not Dan Johnson...

oaklandSMASH - May 30, 2008
doug rader
so a guy wins five gold gloves and the a’s make him their hitting coach?
xbhaskarx - May 30, 2008
Ask Mark Ellis about the link
between offense and the gold glove
jpl - May 30, 2008
Now he has a logo on his helmet
He’s official

thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Me too...
It’s too…lazy. First syllables of first and last name? Zzzzzz….
FormerHuntsvilleStar - May 30, 2008
how about CarGo!!!?
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 30, 2008
Only if he comes to the plate in a UPS truck.
Then he’s CarGo. :)
FormerHuntsvilleStar - May 30, 2008
He could be CarGo if he delivers all the time! DUh!!!
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 30, 2008
Well then why don't you think of one!
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 30, 2008
Eh...he's only been a major leaguer for a couple of hours.
Someone will come up with a good one soon enough. Maybe.
FormerHuntsvilleStar - May 30, 2008
All the names I come up for people usually end in "face"
And most often they’re not very nice.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Hi everybody!
Looks like I’m just in time to see Carlos Gonzalez drive in his first run…Good deal
FormerHuntsvilleStar - May 30, 2008
Hi FHS!
Poppy - May 30, 2008
Hi P!
:)
FormerHuntsvilleStar - May 30, 2008
I'm liking this 1.000/1.000/2.000 line
Soaker - May 30, 2008
Yay Carlos!
They shrewdly doubled in the same inning this time
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
I like how his first was down the left field line
and his second double was down the right.
oaklandSMASH - May 30, 2008
So for his next AB...
a double down the center field line?
calgbear - May 30, 2008
All fields!
I like this kid.

Don't know whether I should invoke this
but on 9/3/97, a certain #1 A’s prospect made his major league debut by going 3-for-4 with all 3 hits being doubles. He had 5 RBIs that night.
Soaker - May 30, 2008
And if he'd played CF that night, the A's would've given up 23 runs
Nick - May 30, 2008
They still might

Johnny....Like who's Johnny?
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
No, it's "HEEEEEEERE'S Johnny!"
Poppy - May 30, 2008
Tonight's guest host is Joan Rivers
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
That woulda been a lot less scary if it had been Johnny Mathis smashing through the door with an axe
Nick - May 30, 2008
Chances are you're correct
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 30, 2008
They said Milwood was supposed to go about 85-90 pitches
Trainman - May 30, 2008
That's good news for us, I think
Nick - May 30, 2008
Duke made about 6 mistakes that inning -
I feel very fortunate to be 1-1 after 5.
When’s Gonzalez up again?
Nico - May 30, 2008
Geez, did we send him back down already?
Nick - May 30, 2008

millwood’s still around 70
closetasfan - May 30, 2008

Cust keeps striking out looking
argh…

Well, see, that one wasn't a strike
Even the Rangers announcers agree.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Come on Chavy!
FormerHuntsvilleStar - May 30, 2008

Well, Millwood should be done now
Hopefully they can get something off the Rangers bullpen.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
I can't remember if we have any relievers,
but a couple should probably start warming up soon.
Nico - May 30, 2008
I wish they had reliever hitters
the A’s need like 4-5 of them.
asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008
They have four, but...
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
what can brown do for you

closetasfan - May 30, 2008
He can certainly disappoint you

jpl - May 30, 2008
I openly admit that I have a man crush

asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008
Ok, who there thought he was gonna actually catch that ball?
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Cust would have easily had it.
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
Well, it's easy to pick the ball up off the ground
after it bounces off the wall. So, yes, I agree.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Off the bounce?
Flashfire - May 30, 2008
No. He would be stationed there.
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
Jack Cust camped under a ball doesn't necessarily guarantee anything
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Come on...he hasn't dropped a ball in weeks
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
Except for yesterday
Flashfire - May 30, 2008
I guess in a 6 days, yesterday will be a week ago
drink409 - May 30, 2008
I didn't see the game yesterday.
So it didn’t happen
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
fair enough...i didn't see the game either
but they did show it during the intro music to sportscenter. he nonchalantly walked under it like an easy out, then it just bounced off his glove…
drink409 - May 30, 2008
OK so he only does that in wins or blowout losses
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
how about a trade proposal
huston street and spare parts for Salty.
closetasfan - May 30, 2008
Why?
Flashfire - May 30, 2008
Emil really doesn't inspire any confidence, does he?

That was really Ellis' fault - not a terrible throw,
not sure what happened.
Nico - May 30, 2008
Looked like a weird bounce
asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008
I disagree. Ellis is perfect.
Poppy - May 30, 2008
Not any more
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
Barton
Back up a fucking throw.
notsellingjeans - May 30, 2008
He needs to be on the bag at 1B
or Murphy can wander off.
Nico - May 30, 2008
It was a sac fly
Murphy is glued to the bag
MrIncognito - May 30, 2008
Not if no one is holding on the bag
Nico - May 30, 2008
I hope guardad is as bad as I remember
because the A’s offense fills me with despair right now.
MrIncognito - May 30, 2008
*Guardado
MrIncognito - May 30, 2008
Player I forget still plays in the league: Eddie Guardado
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
So what have I missed?
justarebelheart - May 30, 2008
A great start to Carlos Gonzalez's ML career...
...2 doubles with an RBI…and a blah day for Emil Brown.
And the offense has left the building again. So not much. :)
FormerHuntsvilleStar - May 30, 2008
Tom Grieve is wrong
According to br.com, he played 3 games at first base, not 1.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Please. His name is "TAG"
Nick - May 30, 2008
Nice job, blue
Flashfire - May 30, 2008
I bet that's exactly what Barton just said.
Poppy - May 30, 2008
Barton
wheelhouse pitch, fouls it back. Even Fosse groaned.
Then, he K’s looking.
One won lost won - May 30, 2008
And it wasn't even close on that strike 3 call.
Flashfire - May 30, 2008
pitch f/x had it right on the black
FWIW
MrIncognito - May 30, 2008
Pitch F/X is dead wrong, then
Nowhere near the black on the TV view, even if you don’t have the straight-on angle.
Flashfire - May 30, 2008
If that was on the black
the ones on the “inside corner” can’t possibly be strikes.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
I didn't realize the right handed batters' box was black
baseb3383 - May 30, 2008
Barton already sucks
Blue doesnt need to give him 6 inches off the fuckin plate.
asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008
Dan Johnson
Should have kept him. He is tearing up the AAA. It’s his spring training since A’s didn’t play hoping to keep him in reserve if they could clear waivers. Now they Barton struggling, Sweeney and Thomas on the DL.

LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 30, 2008
Seconded.
Bad mojo + unhappy laptop.
Poppy - May 30, 2008
I'm not happy with this guy's strikezone
He likes to call pitches off the plate inside and outside. To the same hitters. Sometimes the same at bat.
thejd44 - May 30, 2008
Carlos hung in pretty well against the lefty
WaddellCanseco - May 30, 2008
DFA Gonzalez!
His OPS is now down 1.000 points since last inning alone!
IowaA'sFan - May 30, 2008

asfaninpismobeach - May 30, 2008
you are a weak man!
Yes, I am questioning your manhood! lol
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 30, 2008

Man, either feast or famine is right!!

Holy shit, that was terrifying.
Poppy - May 30, 2008
at least cargon is 2-3 at the plate and 0-2 on collisions
xbhaskarx - May 30, 2008
He is pretty thin.
Nick - May 30, 2008
Was anyone paying attention to how often Buck was RF with CarGon CF in AAA?
Nick - May 30, 2008
Buck was usually playing LF and CarGo was playing CF, I'm not sure how often.
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 30, 2008
does emil brown not know how to throw a baseball?
xbhaskarx - May 30, 2008

The good news is that I found my old, filthy, comfy A’s hat that has been missing… in time for the game. The bad news is that the game started on Texas time :-(
The lineup looks very exciting and two more innings to make something happen….
