I like their complaining about gas prices and I like that they mocked people on cellphones waving to their friends watching TV. “If you’re on the speaking to these people, tell them they look like dorks”. Nice.
he has to dive towards the plate when he swings, which throws him off-balance. Could be the same thing with Suzuki. And the motivation might be feeling like his bat is slow, and being afraid of being tied up by an inside fastball.
Save situation is defined by when you enter a game.
If you get the last out of the 8th in a 5-4 game and your team scores 10 in the top of the 9th, you still get the save, even if you end up giving up 4 more runs and the final is 15-8.
I think people need to pick a way of evaluating closers here and stick with it. 0akfosho hates Street because of his save %, to the extent that he ever gives a reason. His career peripherals, however, are great. You hate his ERA, but he finished the game and the A’s won tonight.
I was thinking that “conscious of what’s offensive” was sort of an ironic fit with a generic slur, but now that you have noted i that was just being politically correct, of course i immediately retract my comment.
Let's Go A's!

Trainman - May 17, 2008
Hey folks!
Kids in bed, and I’m just trying to deal with the shock of (a) the score and (b) the Bad Sweeney HR.
Did Sweeney manage to circle the bases without incident?

Why is Suzuki always falling over??
Every time he swings he falls over.
What kind of “balanced” swing is that????
One won lost won - May 17, 2008
Maybe he's taking lessons from Crosby
Nick - May 17, 2008
Maybe he's using Crosby's bat
from what I can see, it weighs…what?...Forty, fifty pounds??
One won lost won - May 17, 2008
When Crosby stands too far from the plate
he has to dive towards the plate when he swings, which throws him off-balance. Could be the same thing with Suzuki. And the motivation might be feeling like his bat is slow, and being afraid of being tied up by an inside fastball.
Nick - May 17, 2008
Suzuki needs another day(s) off
Awful.

Accoring to Wikipedia
He is nicknamed “Rerun” because, due to his failures in school, “every summer he has to go to school to rerun the stuff he did all winter.”
WaddellCanseco - May 17, 2008
Really, it's not a bad nickname for Cust, come to think of it...
Nick - May 17, 2008
Is Cust an excellent dancer?
WaddellCanseco - May 17, 2008
Yeah, it kind of breaks down there
He’s not as…nimble as the original Rerun. But he is big, and he did repeat AAA like 6 times!

Taj Adib - May 17, 2008

jdub69 - May 17, 2008
Well, Ellis is still probably better
Better on D, fundamentally better as a hitter (duh), pretty much as good a baserunner.
I’d vote for MaEl.
Nick - May 17, 2008
So then
who will be our token all-star this year?
sprtsnwyn - May 17, 2008
Bazooka Joe?
Taj Adib - May 17, 2008
I hope it's Ellis for lifetime achievement
WaddellCanseco - May 17, 2008
Bullpen Guy
Casilla if he isn’t dead, Devine otherwise
Bigtoe - May 17, 2008

Hard to say which healthy pitcher deserves it most now. If Street gets a good number of saves in May, they’ll probably take him.
Nick - May 17, 2008
Emil?
WaddellCanseco - May 17, 2008
I think it's more likely that Street's saves will look good than that Brown's RBIs will look good
because Street is a better player and the A’s offense probably won’t create enough runs to allow Brown to continue to put up ridiculous RBI totals.
But it also depends on other players on other teams, of course.
Nick - May 17, 2008
you sure?
Bigtoe - May 17, 2008
I am absolutely sure that Street is a better player than Brown
Nick - May 17, 2008
Why not whichever starter gets the best run support?
That’s who will end up with the best record (assuming one of them doesn’t go on a ridiculous stretch of scoreless innings or something).
I can see Justin Duchscerer being the most anonymous 2-time all-star ever.
thejd44 - May 17, 2008
Crosby is pretty good on D, and at a more valuable position
WaddellCanseco - May 17, 2008
But Ellis is probably the best (or one of the two or three best) at his
If Ellis is worth 3 wins at second, Crosby worth 1 at short, even with the position adjustments Ellis is a more valuable defensive player.

that is the one player I paused on.
Bigtoe - May 17, 2008

No
GreenNGoldSooner - May 17, 2008
no

Save situation is defined by when you enter a game.
If you get the last out of the 8th in a 5-4 game and your team scores 10 in the top of the 9th, you still get the save, even if you end up giving up 4 more runs and the final is 15-8.

Didn't think so.
Thanks all.
and
WHEW.
pam5981 - May 17, 2008
This sound from the stands is seriously creepy
I usually never hear it, sounds like some battle call, far too close to my taste.
paradox - May 17, 2008
I am going to vomit
miggyk2 - May 17, 2008
4.58 ERA for Street
Not Closer #’s
Zonis - May 17, 2008
Not tradeable numbers.
Taj Adib - May 17, 2008
Joe Borowski?
miggyk2 - May 17, 2008
LOl Huston Borowksi
Trainman - May 17, 2008
Has the era part down. Just not the saves.
miggyk2 - May 17, 2008
exactly
he is not a closer.
He is a mop up man, that’s it
I will bet you anything his arm (elbow) is hurting
Trainman - May 17, 2008
Ok, but his ERA was a full run lower before this game
A non-save situation.
I don’t really understand the argument.
Anybody who calls him a mop-up reliever should be banned from watching the sport forever.
thejd44 - May 17, 2008
Oh come on, you cannot be taking this seriously
He has something wrong with him. Ever since that nerve injury to his elbow
He has been very shaky at times and does not have the velocity he had before he hurt his elbow
Now if that is the problem then that is the reason why he looks bad at times.
He was near lights out before he hurt himself.
Trainman - May 17, 2008
I dunno
I think people need to pick a way of evaluating closers here and stick with it. 0akfosho hates Street because of his save %, to the extent that he ever gives a reason. His career peripherals, however, are great. You hate his ERA, but he finished the game and the A’s won tonight.
Nick - May 17, 2008
2 outs
jdub69 - May 17, 2008
And bases empty....thank goodness!
GreenNGoldSooner - May 17, 2008
PLEASE win
paradox - May 17, 2008
one strike away
paradox - May 17, 2008
thank God
paradox - May 17, 2008
Game Over

LoseWinSorry, force of habbit.
Zonis - May 17, 2008
beatuy. Scary finish but a win is a win. and the halo's lose. great day
TheGreenGoldCrush - May 17, 2008
"Let's go Braves" is all right
That other chant could have come from a Nazi rally, I swear.
paradox - May 17, 2008
Do you expect Southerners to be conscious of what's offensive?
thejd44 - May 17, 2008
Ummm...excuse me?
Hot Cup Joe - May 17, 2008
political correctness...
...does not yet prohibit the insulting of Southern Americans…
sddbaker - May 17, 2008
Well,
I was thinking that “conscious of what’s offensive” was sort of an ironic fit with a generic slur, but now that you have noted i that was just being politically correct, of course i immediately retract my comment.
Hot Cup Joe - May 17, 2008
Plus, "lets go braves" sounded like "lets go A's
thingswecarry - May 17, 2008
half a game back of the Angles now
Zonis - May 17, 2008
Don't high-5 anyone, Huston...
UncleLeo - May 17, 2008
So is Street still our most likely All Star?
;-)
GreenNGoldSooner - May 17, 2008
No
paradox - May 17, 2008
Jay Howell made it
WaddellCanseco - May 17, 2008
high three?
Jennifer - May 17, 2008
JEE-ZUS.
Taj Adib - May 17, 2008
God damnit how frustrating of a finish
Please show sad Braves fans on TV
thingswecarry - May 17, 2008
Watching Barry Zito throw 84 mph fastballs is kind of sad
He’s making the White Sox lineup look pretty ok.
thejd44 - May 17, 2008
I'd take Quentin in an instant.
OldhamA - May 17, 2008
It's 4:00 am....
....I’m going to bed.
At least it was a “W”!
‘Night All!
GreenNGoldSooner - May 17, 2008
Night....er Morning!
WaddellCanseco - May 17, 2008
Good night!
Say hi to the family for me!
Nick - May 17, 2008
Where abouts in Europe are you?
OldhamA - May 17, 2008
A win is a win
Glad Harden did well. Hopefully he pitches that well next start…whenever that is.
sprtsnwyn - May 17, 2008
When is that?
I’d like to see him pitch while I’m in Texas, but I don’t think that will happen.
Jennifer - May 17, 2008
Agreed.
sprtsnwyn - May 17, 2008
Disagree.
When I said ”...I don’t think that will happen, I meant “I don’t think it will be his turn in the rotation.”
Jennifer - May 17, 2008
Yeah
I know. I’ve thought ahead as well.
sprtsnwyn - May 17, 2008
Where's the dude that always bitches about Huston.
Banned, I assume, since we aren’t hearing from him.
Jennifer - May 17, 2008
But others are filling in capably
WaddellCanseco - May 17, 2008
0akfosho is the handle
Nick - May 17, 2008
I was trying to forget.
Jennifer - May 17, 2008
Drink more
Nick - May 17, 2008
Look at it this way -
Great time for Huston to give up 3 runs.
Nico - May 17, 2008
Basically, he can't get by with only his fastball
He didn’t have much of a slider or change tonight, and he’s hittable when that happens.
Nick - May 17, 2008
Doesn't look sexy when Beane's trying to shop him though.
OldhamA - May 17, 2008
With Casilla out for god knows how long
I’m not sure they’re actively shopping Huston right now.
Nick - May 17, 2008
I don't think they're actively shopping anyone, that's not how the best deals are done.
OldhamA - May 17, 2008
He almost lost the game...
...without blowing a save.
