Those are some bitter folks. They wear FUCK PITTSBURGH t-shirts
during baseball season. I posted this last year but a 6-7 year old kid was wearning one while walking down the streets with his dad. It brought a tear to my eye and I wished I had a son.
I live in NJ now, and summer S.U.C.K.S. I work in an office in someone’s house, and until last August (late August) there was. no. air. conditioning. It was usually over 85 degrees in my office.
I used to go down to the basement to cool off.
Also, my body is not fond of deciduous tree pollen.
its like you can feel it with this team. You can feel when they are going to suck and you can feel when they have a chance at coming back. Tonight just didnt feel like their night.
Most of the good defensive plays were on little bloopers—Dellucci caught one that Murphy hit to the wall, and Cabrera made a nice stab to his right. Other than that, it was great plays on badly hit balls.
And I repeat my advice from Sunday about pitching to Thomas—pound the strike zone with fastballs until he proves he can crush them. No reason to nibble with him on reputation. Maybe it’s a slump, or maybe it’s the final downturn of a HOF career, but pitchers ought to put the burden on FT to prove it’s the former, not the latter.
If Hurt stops drawing walks and still isn’t hitting the ball hard, then it’s the end of the line for him.

The entire Top 10 on SC tonight is gonna be Indians defense
thejd44 - May 13, 2008
Well it's not like that was hit hard

Paul Byrd is a lucky bastard.

I think there should be a limit on spectacular defensive plays.
After the 3rd one in the same game, the runner shall be called safe.
ohtobe21likehuston - May 13, 2008
That would be unfair to Jack Cust.
Nico - May 13, 2008
Paul Byrd? REALLY?
come on.
pam5981 - May 13, 2008
If you are ever looking to visit a nice park Cleveland definitely
qualifies. I saw a playoff game there last year and highly recommend it.
ohtobe21likehuston - May 13, 2008
The only bad part is you have to go to Cleveland to see it

I should probably feel bad for the people of Cleveland
But, no, I don’t. Move. Find a new team (regardless of sport).
thejd44 - May 13, 2008
Go Good Sweeney! Score a goal unit basket!
thejd44 - May 13, 2008
Indians playing a "no doubles defense"
which is just unnecessary with the A’s “no doubles (or home runs) offense”
thejd44 - May 13, 2008
That might actually help the A's.
KMoAsFan - May 13, 2008
Oh no...
if Geren hit for Murphy, he would play M. Sweeney at 1B, move Hannahan to 2B and play Barton at 3B. [Korach]
Soaker - May 13, 2008
I think Murphy's OPS would have to be less than .000 for that to be a good idea
thejd44 - May 13, 2008
Cust to SS, Suzuki to LF, Street to C, of course.

I’ve been listening to the game while weeding—since it’s about to be so ungodly hot I won’t want to set foot outside for a week.
So No Weeds Mojo!
Englishmajor - May 13, 2008
"Weeding"
Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
ohtobe21likehuston - May 13, 2008
Sadly, by the time Betancourt is done pitching
it’ll be time to cut the same weeds.
Nico - May 13, 2008
Will it be ridiculously horrendously hot?
Poppy - May 13, 2008
Horrendously but not ridiculously so.
(what’s with the “extreme heat warning” for the rest of thie week?)
pam5981 - May 13, 2008
It's going to be extremely hot.
Duh.
Poppy - May 13, 2008
How hot does it get in Oakland? I am used to 100 degree heat but thought
you guys had mostly cool weather.
ohtobe21likehuston - May 13, 2008
I'm looking at two days in the mid 90's in the south bay
And they are going to suck
doctorK - May 13, 2008
It was lovely in OAK today
mid-70’s… but we’re also kinda weather wusses… Prefer nothing over 85 or under 55, and refuse precipitation of any temperature.
149 - May 13, 2008
That is perfect, IMO.
And I am a weather wuss. But I’m okay with rain.
pam5981 - May 13, 2008

ohtobe21likehuston - May 13, 2008

that shit was cold.
Jennifer - May 13, 2008
You and I speak the same weather language.
ohtobe21likehuston - May 13, 2008
You're just used to WARM humidity.
Our cold humidity makes “cool” seem colder, I think.
Poppy - May 13, 2008
I think you're right
And I say this all the time. Similar humidity, much cooler temps = fog. Cold ass, bone chilling, teeth chattering … ah f’it you know.
149 - May 13, 2008
But I love fog.
I have to, I’m on the Peninsula.
Poppy - May 13, 2008

Jennifer - May 13, 2008
Different kind of meds though.

thejd44 - May 13, 2008

pam5981 - May 13, 2008
Random sidenote
Donnie Murphy’s full name is Donald Rex Murphy.
The A’s have Don King (Murphy) on their team!
thejd44 - May 13, 2008
That may help promote 1-0 baseball games.
ohtobe21likehuston - May 13, 2008
Thank God that Murphy got a hit
Because Suzuki would have lead off 9th with an OUT
Give the guy a day off immediately Please
0-20 leading off is not good. You cannot do any worse.
Trainman - May 13, 2008
Whoo! Hawt corner!
Poppy - May 13, 2008
I would say move Suzuki down in the order
but not really anyone better on the club to lead off
asfaninpismobeach - May 13, 2008
At least he might get a little more rest batting down in the order.
KMoAsFan - May 13, 2008
Ture, I guess put Sweeney there
since they play him everyday in Centerfield anyway. Sounds good, a slap hitting Centerfielder to lead off
asfaninpismobeach - May 13, 2008
Dang.
Hannahan is awesome if the ball is not hit directly at him.
KMoAsFan - May 13, 2008
That wasn't really much to his left though.

KMoAsFan - May 13, 2008
Basically until Thomas heats up and Barton stops trying to be a hero every at bat

Several things need to happen
1) Suzuki out of 1 hole
2) Mike Sweeney needs to be hitting against CC Sabathia
3) We need to light up CC like we usually do
Trainman - May 13, 2008
Correction: Suzuki in dugout, watching Rob Bowen play
He needs a rest.
Nick - May 13, 2008
So does Crosby
but I dont know how you do that
asfaninpismobeach - May 13, 2008
If Ellis is hurt, you can't
Nick - May 13, 2008
Agreed
Trainman - May 13, 2008
NO 2 OUT WALKS.
KMoAsFan - May 13, 2008
I'm less pissed losing that 4-0 than 1-0
Not that I want to encourage the bullpen to surrender 3-run HRs, but that would have been really putrid as a 1-0 loss.
Nick - May 13, 2008
Its funny man
its like you can feel it with this team. You can feel when they are going to suck and you can feel when they have a chance at coming back. Tonight just didnt feel like their night.
asfaninpismobeach - May 13, 2008
I agree 100% unless they would have come back.
ohtobe21likehuston - May 13, 2008
They really didn't hit the ball all that well
Most of the good defensive plays were on little bloopers—Dellucci caught one that Murphy hit to the wall, and Cabrera made a nice stab to his right.

Does he consistently look "late" on the fastball? I think his timing is definitely off
but I thought he was all over the place- out in front, late, doing the Crosby dive at outside fastballs, etc.

He looks late to me, fouling a lot of pitches off or back
So much of his value right now is in his walks. If I were a pitcher I’d take that away and see if he could hit the ball.

I haven't had an opportunity to watch many games with full attention but that is
a bad sign, if true. Luckily we don’t have much money invested in him.

Gotta go to semi-work now!

I love unity but the yellow t-shirts in New Orleans
have made me decide not to watch the game. It’s impossible to block them out of the picture. Oh well… < looks for stupid 2-star movie>
