After a messy first inning that saw the A's give up 3 runs, Greg Smith has settled down in his major league debut, holding the Blue Jays without a run over the last 3 innings, and not allowing a hit since the first frame. Meanwhile, the A's posted 2 runs in the 4th to cut the margin to a single run, but left us all aghast (again) by managing not to score in the 5th inning, despite having the bases loaded and nobody out.
We head to the bottom of the 5th with Smith throwing a 1 hitter, but trailing 3-2.

For those who don't get it
"Frist!" Was a Senator's last name, this slang comes from liberal blog comments.

Turning out to be a pretty nice outing for
Smith.

How gritty was that grounder?

I wonder what Greg Smith is thinking about now
"What the hell?"

Frank Thomas' old pants

149 - April 9, 2008
scary thought loaded no outs
Triple Eh's - April 9, 2008
Cust is worthless.
I have learned to not expect anything from the A's when they have a man on third with less than 2 outs. At some point, a squeeze has to be called. This shit is old and predictable. It's either a K or an infield pop out every time. Or a DP. Figure it out!!!!
Swishdball - April 9, 2008
Not really
He isn't a four hitter though, we might be able to find a better DH but I can't think of one

Jason Kendall Update
Through the first few days of the year, he's hitting .550 with a 1.383 OPS! Where was that in Oakland??? And he's caught stealers in the past 2 games
JJ - April 9, 2008
Everybody, repeat after me
Small
Sample

doctorK - April 9, 2008
The thing is that
Not once in Oakland did he have a 20-AB stretch like that!
JJ - April 9, 2008
true enough
but when was the last time Ken-Doll was hitting .550... period?
149 - April 9, 2008
I hope he can keep it up for at least a little while longer...
I just dumped Kenji Johjima's sorry ass in exchange for Kendall. I could hardly believe it myself.
Elvez - April 9, 2008
He got Lasik surgery
and this is the result.
Apparently, according to KKorach, Kendall resisted, used his own ideas, area by his locker littered with contact lenses, eyedrops, etc. Finally got Lasik and says his vision...well, "results may vary"

i'll take over 40, you take under 40. let's put $1,000 on it. deal?
xbhaskarx - April 9, 2008
it was just a joke...
our starters combined have as many home runs as mark reynolds...it's a bit unsettling.
simbiant - April 9, 2008
yeah, or chris shelton in the first two weeks of 2005
obviously shelton is better than the entire a's roster.
of course the tigers offense has been so deadly (4 hr, one less than the a's), they could send him down to AAA and then trade him...

Classic A'sball
149 - April 9, 2008
Sweeney is defendable
He's actually hitting right now, unlike most of our team (and Denorfia), and the ball he hit should have been a hit.

questionable calls are classic.

OptimistPrime - April 9, 2008
Can't defend R. Sweeny......
I am all for the learning process with the youngins, but you don't leave a 5 time all star on the bench in the 8th with the bases loaded and 1 out.
djhbaseball - April 9, 2008
absolutely!!
alamedaman - April 9, 2008
Even though the kid has been ripping lately?
Joey C. - April 9, 2008
Exactly.
If M. Sweeney did what R. Sweeney did, the comments would be "you don't pinch hit for a .400+ batter in the 8th with the bases loaded and 1 out."
louismg - April 9, 2008
R. Sweeney wound up doing ok, but you have to PH M. Sweeney there
mikeA - April 9, 2008
you pinch hit big sweeney there
OptimistPrime - April 9, 2008
That's all the negativity you could think of?
A's win a great come from behind game and you say the hit streak was snapped? Who is your favorite team?

Not too much, mind you. Just enough.
pam5981 - April 9, 2008
Where has that carom been

baseball takes precedence at all times, though.
Jjjsixsix - April 9, 2008
I don't think so Zonis
He was very off-balance when he fielded the ball -- he spun completely around ... no way they turn that.
Vacafan - April 9, 2008
He didn't have to spin around like that though
mikeA - April 9, 2008
He did if he wanted the points for style and degree of difficulty.
Jennifer - April 9, 2008
Baseball dressage.
salb918 - April 9, 2008
They would've had the guy at first no problem
which is probably the play he should've made.
Tyler Bleszinski - April 9, 2008
Man,
it's so much better when former heroes fuck it up instead of hit home runs like big Frank.
mikeA - April 9, 2008

alamedaman - April 9, 2008

baseb3383 - April 9, 2008
I actually think the better play probably would've been at first
Emil got a late break out of the box.
Tyler Bleszinski - April 9, 2008

Second was lonely and forlorn, as arid as the Gobi

asfaninpismobeach - April 9, 2008
do his mechanics look the same?
Jjjsixsix - April 9, 2008
He does tend to lose velocity on back-to-back days
A legitimate reason to have Foulke ready.
Nico - April 9, 2008
I was going to say
You're right, he has done that since his rookie season.
baseb3383 - April 9, 2008
his mechanics look great
the problem is his pitching
OptimistPrime - April 9, 2008

A's television director's phone number
I left a phone message at 510-563-2269 expressing my disgust with Comcast. I couldn't find a phone number on the CSN Bay Area website.
treble1313 - April 9, 2008
I'll let it go
I've got other things to stress on, the venting in the thread was enough.
paradox - April 9, 2008
Honestly, though, you can't really blame them.
Then again, I do follow hockey.
Playoff hockey game vs April baseball game which not (or should not have become) in doubt...
If I were programming, I'd have switched too.
Jjjsixsix - April 9, 2008
In a perfect world, NBC 11 would take the emergency Giants feed
and appropriately take the place of "The Biggest Loser."
oaklandSMASH - April 9, 2008
They had options
They could have sent it to CSN+ and displaced the beginning of the Giant's game. They could have added it to Extra Innings as a freebe. They could have at least had the game during the Shark's breaks. They could have kept us up to date on the game during the Shark's game. Flat out nothing is complete BS.
DMOAS - April 9, 2008
We're over .500!!!!!

Tyler Bleszinski - April 9, 2008
Yanks made a smart move
Thought it was going to go to a rain delay at some point, so they started Bruney. Then went to their bullpen, and THEN brought Kennedy in to pitch the 6th. Too bad that rain delay never happened, and they look stupid because of it.
sprtsnwyn - April 9, 2008
And mlb.com
Why do we have to log in every single time we come back to Gameday Audio or MLB.tv? There are these things called cookies, see....many people on the Internets use them to great effect.
Englishmajor - April 9, 2008
