Chad Gaudin has two things going for him: A healthy lat and a passport. So unlike 2/5 of the A's rotation, he's actually good to go. Rich Harden, who gets scratched more often than a vinyl record (young fans should look up what a vinyl record is), has been pushed back to Saturday, and so Gaudin will make his season debut tonight against hard-throwing righty A.J. Burnett. The A's will start the nine players who are healthy and have been allowed into Canada, specifically:
Buck - RF
Ellis - 2B
Barton - 1B
M. Sweeney - DH
Cust - LF
Crosby - SS
Hannahan - 3B
Suzuki - C
R. Sweeney - CF
For the Blue Jays:
Eckstein - SS
Stairs - LF
Rios - RF
V. Wells - CF
Big Hurt - DH
Overbay - 1B
Hill - 2B
Marco...SCUTARO!!! - 3B
Zaun - C

Prediction
A's 5 - Jays 2
drink409 - April 8, 2008
you got the scores reversed
Zonis - April 8, 2008
Not necessarily
Zonis :-)
Tyler Bleszinski - April 8, 2008
Looking good so far!
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
I think this is the best lineup we have right now
It should be the basic format upon which all game to game variations are made
Keze - April 8, 2008
Love this lineup
Lets go, and here is hoping that Rich is healthy on Saturday.
ChadGod - April 8, 2008
man, that's a swing
mikeA - April 8, 2008
Safe
drink409 - April 8, 2008
WHAM!
paradox - April 8, 2008
I thought he hit it out
paradox - April 8, 2008
wooooo
Way to get it going Mike!!!
ChadGod - April 8, 2008
don't slide with that left hand, Dale
mikeA - April 8, 2008
apparently,
the A's scoring is too much for my firefox to handle, because it definitely crashed right before the run...
Jjjsixsix - April 8, 2008
Wow...a REAL RBI!
Not a passed ball scoring a run, not an error, not a walk, but someone on the A's HIT THE BALL with 2 out and drove in a run.
I'm stunned.
Um...c'mon pitching!
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
I thought Sweeney hit it out too
I'll take the RBI double though!
Nico - April 8, 2008
at least that wasn't 0-2
mikeA - April 8, 2008
should be below....
mikeA - April 8, 2008
Welcome back Chad
Time to prove my handle correct.
ChadGod - April 8, 2008
Damn! My free MLB cable package has ended.
Gameday here I come.
asfaninpismobeach - April 8, 2008
Is this David Eckstein,
or "the pesky Eckstein"? I've heard about them both.
Nico - April 8, 2008
Go Dan!
danmerqury - April 8, 2008
Pssh - Harden woulda barehanded that
and missed 4 months.
Nico - April 8, 2008
Damn
drink409 - April 8, 2008
so much for "Um...c'mon pitching!"
drink409 - April 8, 2008
crap...
tosk - April 8, 2008
Don't think Gaudin is ready...
Zonis - April 8, 2008
Maybe, maybe not
Wells is a monster
Keze - April 8, 2008
Not watching though, so maybe I should shut up
Keze - April 8, 2008
Looks like you were right
darn
Keze - April 8, 2008
Ouch!
RenoTy - April 8, 2008
wow, that was an awful pitch...
mikeA - April 8, 2008
So was the one to Mike Sweeney -
too bad it isn't 3-2. :-(
Nico - April 8, 2008
Yeah...um...perhaps more rehabbing?
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
hope he rebounds..
tosk - April 8, 2008
aw
EllisFanatic - April 8, 2008
Um...yikes.
Come on, Gaudin.

Way to go!
Hey Riich, how are ya?
paradox - April 8, 2008
Eek

pam5981 - April 8, 2008
Oh wow, I forgot how big Frank Thomas was.
I miss him.
danmerqury - April 8, 2008
me too
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
I despise Rich Harden right now
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
Hey at least at 81.00 era he will get better as the season goes on
asfaninpismobeach - April 8, 2008
I wouldn't be so sure.
danmerqury - April 8, 2008
Somebody end this nightmare
paradox - April 8, 2008
uhm... oops?
Jjjsixsix - April 8, 2008
What did we expect?
Gaudin clearly wasn't going to be ready to start, so if he makes it 3 innings I'll be surprised. I was afraid that this would happen. Hopefully he can settle it down and get out with only these 3 runs, because burning the bullpen and hoping Greg Smith can go 7 is not a good strategy.
sprtsnwyn - April 8, 2008
4-5 innings for DiNardo today should be a good tuneup for his start on Saturday
mikeA - April 8, 2008
Sort of forgot about Lenny
Hopefully we just put up a 10 spot so we don't have to worry about it.
sprtsnwyn - April 8, 2008
Well, that was interesting.
Ummm...offense, could you try showing up today?
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
Er, thanks Marco.
danmerqury - April 8, 2008
I thought Cust was going to rob Vernon of that Hr. I also thought Rich was going to stay healthy. I'm 0-2
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
There are few things less likely than Harden being healthy,
but a Cust web-gem might be one of them.
Nico - April 8, 2008
He will win the gold glove with his bat.
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
I think I'm going to steal this for my sig
of course if that's okay with you.
pam5981 - April 8, 2008
lol at the 4 inch vertical Cust gave on that jump
drink409 - April 8, 2008
It looked more like he shoulder checked the wall.
danmerqury - April 8, 2008
maybe the sharks will sign him before Wed night...could be a good enforcer.
drink409 - April 8, 2008
Green jerseys! WOO!
Jennifer - April 8, 2008
Woohoo!
The blacks aren't too bad, I guess, but they're just not the same.
danmerqury - April 8, 2008

Jennifer - April 8, 2008
SCUTARO!!!
No, it's not the same.
Nico - April 8, 2008

miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
is JINX! an appropriate reply?
Jjjsixsix - April 8, 2008
Anti-Jinx, I think.
mikev - April 8, 2008
that works too.
Jjjsixsix - April 8, 2008
I like the lineup but Buck still leading off? how bad do you have to suck to move down in the order?
asfaninpismobeach - April 8, 2008
He needs to hit a negative percent
sprtsnwyn - April 8, 2008
I want Ellis Zooks Barton 123
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
Time to end the Suzuki/Powell debate!

but whooooo!!
Jjjsixsix - April 8, 2008
MLB.TV Mosaic's box score updates itself before the video shows it.
I saw Sweeney's average jump to .500 before I saw the hit.
But whooooo!

67MARQUEZ - April 8, 2008
Was it an opposite field hit? Sweeney has looked good with that approuch
asfaninpismobeach - April 8, 2008
Double down the RF line
thejd44 - April 8, 2008
My bad right field
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008

sprtsnwyn - April 8, 2008

Haha, good thing Burnett decided to suck today too!
ZeroIndulgence - April 8, 2008

That shouldn't have been such an easy triple.

MaE gets knocked in!
Hit it perfectly to the long gap and the ball stalled at the fence.
paradox - April 8, 2008
whoaaaaa!!
OFFENCE!! IT EXISTS!!
Jjjsixsix - April 8, 2008
Yeah, and it always exists against my fantasy starters, too
This is better than a crappy Yahoo t-shirt, anyway.
Joey C. - April 8, 2008
Do you get a Yahoo t-shirt?
I thought that was ESPN only... and if it's not, where can I demand one? (not really.)
Jjjsixsix - April 8, 2008
Helloooooooooo offense!!!
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
This makes sense:
We used to have great pitching and bad hitting, now Duke and Harden got hurt, so we'll have great hitting and bad pitching.
mikeA - April 8, 2008
I'd make that trade.
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
That's not such a bad situation
if Gio and Greg Smith and the Stockton Studs are the real deal.

he had to turn that glove around to catch the ball tho
BigTuna - April 8, 2008

emergency passport
since he had an active one on file, and there's a passport office in SF, it was easy to get it done quickly
OaklandSi - April 8, 2008

Yes, I'm suggesting that.

thejd44 - April 8, 2008
Ok, he just Kd. But I stand by my "he waits a long time" comment
thejd44 - April 8, 2008
Agreed - except he's swinging harder this year
than he did last Sept, which means swinging strikes instead of solid line drive contact.

His critics think he should have more power
(and he should)
I'm sure that explains part of it.
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
Why "should" he?
If what he is a .310 hitter with 15 HRs? Should he mold himself into a .260 hitter with 25 HRs?
Nico - April 8, 2008
I will take the 310 and 15
all day and twice on sunday
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Same here - so stop swinging so hard, Dale!
Nico - April 8, 2008
lol
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
A LA
swisher
(not a la peanut butter sandwiches)
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
ouch
jonahbartlett - April 8, 2008
yikes
BigTuna - April 8, 2008
That ball was crushed
paradox - April 8, 2008
no doubt at all
paradox - April 8, 2008
OY...not good
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
s$%t monkeys
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Gaudin is to pitchers today
what Cust is to hitters.
Nico - April 8, 2008
Geez
Why can't we put together the offense with the good pitching days?
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
oh come on...
what fun would THAT be?
pam5981 - April 8, 2008
When is Dan Meyer going to get a shot at starting?
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
This isn't painful enough for you?
Nico - April 8, 2008
at this rate?
in 5 minutes!
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Might as well give him a chance to see what we have in our minor league system. Cut him loose!
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
is Meyer on the DL?
OaklandSi - April 8, 2008
I think I saw some stats for the River Cats this year. I'm pretty sure he is making it out to the bump.
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
Pagging Bullpen......
Bullpen, you are needed at the front desk.
Masaryk - April 8, 2008
Can they just replay the bottom of the third??
I liked that Chad.
jonahbartlett - April 8, 2008
Good AB for Scoot
*sniff*
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
Paging Marco....
Scoo Taro!
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Now you're gonna make a grown man cry
:P
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
I miss the chant
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Me too
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
At least we have the lead
(holding breath)
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
tie
rhymes with sigh...kinda...right?
BigTuna - April 8, 2008
close enough
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
jinxed
OaklandSi - April 8, 2008
I really, Really hate Eckstien...
Zonis - April 8, 2008
No matter what uniform he wears
He'll always be a Halo to me
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
Really? Because he'll always be a minimally talented elf to me
thejd44 - April 8, 2008
LOL
+1 million
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
I have lot's of Elf friends
who are now mortally offended
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
Are they going to get short with you?
Nico - April 8, 2008
How would I notice?
(sincere questioning look)
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
Oh, you can laugh, Nico
but if you'd ever had a wee acorn-cap full of piping hot hollyhock tea thrown in your face, you wouldn't mess with them.
Englishmajor - April 8, 2008
2 elves, 1 acorn-cap?
monkeyball - April 8, 2008
thanks, Ellis
mikeA - April 8, 2008
This guy is tough to double up!
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
Seems like we only can do it every 9 batters!
Nico - April 8, 2008
Don't stop doin' whatever you do
Keze - April 8, 2008
eckstein rhymes with
poopy head
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Crosby wouldn't have had it anyway,
but I hate playing the IF in there.
mikeA - April 8, 2008
Too bad Cust wasn't at short. He would have had that.
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
I hate playing the IF in in just about any situation
monkeyball - April 8, 2008
8th or 9th, tie game?
mikeA - April 8, 2008
Bottom of the 9th, tie game - gotta play it back
Try to win it tomorrow.
Nico - April 8, 2008
if Neifi Perez or Jason Kendall is at bat, sure
monkeyball - April 8, 2008
If the infield was back, Crosby would have had it easily
Nico - April 8, 2008
I thought that at first, but on the replay the ball was still rising when it hit his glove
mikeA - April 8, 2008
Yeah but he was well in (too far, IMO, with turf)
Whatever - it doesn't really matter now, does it!
Nico - April 8, 2008
I bet Cust would have caught it in left then if it was still rising. Probably at the warning track!
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
So he should've been in MORE
it's not like Eckstein can muscle it out of the infield anyway
thejd44 - April 8, 2008
Zooks is hitting the tar out of the ball.
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
There's tar on the ball?
Nico - April 8, 2008
In it
miggyk2 - April 8, 2008
I know small sample size and all
but I really like Suzuki's htiting. He's not getting a bunch of dinky fluke hits. He's showing he can actually handle major league pitching. I think he'll be just fine.
thejd44 - April 8, 2008
Kendall did set a low bar ;-)
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
He just poked an RBI single
off Cueto.
BWH - April 8, 2008
poked
being the operative word
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Well, at least there is hitting...
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
At least SOMEONE is hitting on this team
Go Zooks
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
BIG AB for Sweeney
baseballgirl - April 8, 2008
[sigh]
paradox - April 8, 2008
Darn
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
rhino
:(
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
I wonder if Sweeney could have beaten it
I'd like to see how he ran out of the box before he knew Tallet was late covering.
Nico - April 8, 2008
ouch
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Sorry, stepped on your foot
Stupid internet.
Nico - April 8, 2008
You need
tallet lessons
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
That's a blend of ballet and talent?
Nico - April 8, 2008
or lack thereof :)
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Battle of the bullpens -
Hard to say if that's a good thing or not...
Nico - April 8, 2008
Excuse me while I interject....
Hey! That smarts!
Ouch! That hurts!
Yow! That's not fair givin' a guy a shot down there!
Interjections (Hey!) show excitement (Yow!) or emotion (Ouch!).
They're generally set apart from a sentence by an exclamation point
Or by a comma when the feeling's not as strong.
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
Brown has no command so far this year
mikeA - April 8, 2008
What can Brown do for you?
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
he can strike someone out
and handle all my shipping needs
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Immovable mediocrity
meets
irresistable blandness
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
I just spent $38.21 on a quadruple AU card
of Blanton, Cust, Haren, and Swisher.
Well, it's not really money spent, since it's all money I earned by selling stuff on eBay. But still, that's a lot for an effing baseball card. I have problems.
thejd44 - April 8, 2008
Im addicted to Bowman Chrome
Syphon - April 8, 2008
two words
betty. ford.
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Oh great, now SHE'S up in the bullpen?
Nico - April 8, 2008

Syphon - April 8, 2008
Then don't be a ham
Nico - April 8, 2008
Gotta stay away from that salt,
Syphon - April 8, 2008
she's dead...
oh, wait....never stopped Harden
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
I'm a player collector
and actually, today I got in a lot of 2000 Bowman Chrome Refractors. I only needed 1 of the 9. Now I gotta figure out what to do with a lot in which Scot Shields and Robb Quinlan are the best players.
thejd44 - April 8, 2008
Refractor Sheilds UP!
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
I just got into it...
I need autos and 5/5 hotness.
Syphon - April 8, 2008
see Cindi for hotness
OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008
Someone posted some cool..
Bowman Chrome Autos on the fan shot page.
Syphon - April 8, 2008
Barton has scared me twice this game. head first slide into home and a slide into the rail.

Keze - April 8, 2008

OptimistPrime - April 8, 2008

Damn! They dont happen often. I hate to miss one.
thejd44 - April 8, 2008

Wooohoooo!
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
thanks, Eckstein's arm
OaklandSi - April 8, 2008
Eckstein may have the worst arm in baseball.
Two in the dirt, now this. He's the Johnny Damon of the infield.
BWH - April 8, 2008
somebody update!?
all i have is a slow gameday
oakinboston - April 8, 2008
Ditto
510inDenver - April 8, 2008

try to turn two.. throw from SS to 1st offline 2 score
drink409 - April 8, 2008

OaklandSi - April 8, 2008
hard hit dp ball to first
out at second, throw went past the pitcher, running to the bad for an error, 2 runs score.
mikeA - April 8, 2008
Sounds similar to the play Barton missed last game
Keze - April 8, 2008
Cust might have safe anyway
Future Ed - April 8, 2008
Oh man....
Cust beating a throw at first????!!!!! Did Eckstein throw it underhand?????
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
Sweeney slid hard into Eckstein at 2nd...
resulting in bad throw. Good base-running by Mike.
FoolshGame22 - April 8, 2008
muy excellente
And he didn't do a Dye? or a Crosby? Wow....players *NOT* made of glass.
Who knew?
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
Eckstein made of marshmellow...
Soft landing.
149 - April 8, 2008
It occurs to me
That Hannahans' name must have played hell on the Japanese announcers pronunciation....
510inDenver - April 8, 2008
I think it would be easy
Ha-na-ha-na-ha-n. Goes perfectly into Japanese.
Englishmajor - April 8, 2008
Half the credit
for that E goes to Eckstien's oompah-loompah arm... the other half to Barton for good clean slide into 2B.
