Slight like not being invited to the wedding of someone
who you thought was a good friend so you spend your entire life trying to get back at them only to have them visit you on your death bed and ask you why you didn't come to the wedding, didn't you get the invitation?
once they pinpoint the source/location of the pain, they can figure out whether or not its a tendon or something else. If its the tendon, i think the default goes to "tendonitis"
Yeah, I don't think it would be that hard to diagnose at least preliminarily
It's not like diagnosing a back or a wrist, which have lots of moving parts and things that can go wrong. They can probably rule out a nerve problem (no numbness or tingling) and then do some "provocative" tests to see what makes it hurt.
that usually, a diagnosis of "slight biceps tendinitis" requires a plane flight to L.A. and a visit to Dr. Yocum. Not sure that Soupy Sales can make this type of pronouncement...and especially to declare it "slight".
I'm trying to remember who it was either last year or a couple of years ago the A's player who started 0-for-twenty-something, which is what Travis Buck is approaching now. Who was it? Thanks...
We had a discussion about this in a game thread last season
Annibal Sanchez has a Carthaginian name, too, and Ambiorix Burgos is named after a Gaulish chieftain. God knows where that all comes from. Maybe Asterix books are really popular in Latin America.
naked, blindfolded, cuffed and calling out "Marco... Polo!" Or at least I've heard you can. Not that I would know for certain, but I've, uh, heard of such things happening.
"Get tight when you hit an 0-13 skid because you're one bad game away from getting shipped out." He's scuffling - and he'll be fine. The A's are doing all the right things: Give him a day off, work with him in the batting cage, then lay off him and keep putting him in the lineup. He's not going to hit .000 this season.
All seriousness aside, you're playing back and it's a slow grounder so...you throw home? Then again, memo to Daric Barton: Why was it so close? You can slow down after you cross home plate.
Loved Crosby's tag up to second - that's the kind of aggressive baserunning I'm talking about the A's needing to make part of their game. When you don't have a great hitting or slugging team, you need to take every base you can.
3 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER and a couple saves, and then given up that solo HR and retired the other three as he did, everyone would be happy and serene. He looked fine tonight, whereas he really didn't look good Wednesday. So I feel cautiously optimistic, Hafner's bomb be damned.
just because we're facing two LHP (C.C. and Cliff Lee). Against RHP, Hannahan wouldn't be too bad a choice. Or Ryan Sweeney - isn't he great? I've always thought so!
tonight. I just got back from the game and am still thawing out.
So nice not to be playing the Sux! (though they had NESN and the Sux getting beat by Toronto – yay! _ playing in the westside club before the game.
After the likes of Matsuzaka, Papelbon, & Co. the A;s looked like they enjoyed batting against Paul Byrd and Jorge Julio. Ryan Sweeney, Barton, and Crosby looked good at the plate...Buck still is struggling...and Street alternated between throwing strikes, nibbling, and giving up yet another HR (luckily the score wasn't close).
Duchscerer supposedly left the game with biceps tendonitis...ugh!
I really wonder if the weather contributed to Duke's problems
That's why I thought it was probably his hip - but that weather can't be great for the arm either. He looked so awesome I just hope he can stay in the rotation. I've thought for years he could do it - c'mon, baseball gods, let the guy pitch!
Duke is absolutely my favorite Athletic and I was so happy to see him dealing tonite. Me hopes his ails is nothing more than cold weather and he bounces back for his next start. #58 rules the yard yo!!!!!!
It was so cold, it was incredibly cold, the coldest I've ever been at the Coliseum. And Coffee Man didn't show up in the bleachers at all. The wind was fierce; it was whipping the tarps on the upper deck and blowing paper and garbage all over the field.
I hope Duke is okay. He looked brilliant in the first four innings but seemed to lose focus as soon as he lost the perfect game. I saw about the biceps tendinitis upthread; there was no announcement at the stadium as far as I heard.
Trumpet Puppet got roundly booed in the left field bleachers.
New food items: things being sold in souvenir helmets; fries, ice cream, and (at the deli stand next to the pizza place) soup in a helmet. Looked disgusting but people told me it was delicious. I had the fish and chips, which were awful.
The guy on the field was bizarre; he jumped out of the stands near the BBQ Terrace in left field, and ran very fast all the way across the field before being apprehended by security as he tried to climb back into the stands in right. He wasn't wearing A's gear, in fact he was dressed almost like a stadium official so we were initially confused about what was going on. Five or six guards piled on him, and one guard who had pursued him all the way across the field received high-fives from several fans in that section when he got back.
I think things like that become popular and beloved if they catch on among fans by chance -- like the Rally Monkey, or like singing "Sweet Caroline" at Fenway. This feels like the marketing department pushing it down our throats.
But I remember when my girls were little. They got a kick out of bringing stuffed toys to the park that they had dressed in little A's T-shirts. So I am going to plunk down my 20 bucks quite happily.
that was Harden and he never came back last year. I thought Duke would have lasted more than one game! Damn exhibition games! Street is also starting to worry. 1HR in each outing! 12.27 ERA! This is getting ridiculous. Let's hope nothing happens to Eveland tmrw against CC.
I really hope 6 runs is not the feast before the famine...
you TAKE HIM OUT the first time you know he's not feeling 100%. It cost Dan Meyer exactly one career that the A's listened to him when he said, "I'm fine." Duke should have come out in the 5th, damn it. It's when you throw while you're hurting that you really hurt yourself.
To be honest, most pitchers pitch with varying degrees of pain. Feeling 100% is never true; past midway through high school, everyone has arm issues. The throwing motion isn't natural and as such, wear and tear is just part pitching. The thought process of a pitcher when pain happens is mostly along the lines of, on that pitch my arm felt a little weird, let me see if I can work through it, because sometimes these things go away after your arm warms up. On cold days especially, your arm feels stiff and can get sore easily even sitting for 10 minutes. But once you start throwing again it goes away.
Duke came out of the game when he felt like it wasn't just a normal tightness, and that's all you can ask of a training staff and a pitcher. I have more problems with the rehab regimens than I do with the initial steps taken when injury happens with our players.
body language is key. The way Duke walked off the mound, waiting for Suzuki to notice and come out, waiting for the trainer, clearly not ok but in "I'll tough it out" mode - when you're at that point your body needs to stop, not push forward. The "pitch through it" you're describing happens under the radar of the fan's view - when you see what we saw, it's not at the "pitch through it" stage anymore.
Something didn't seem right in the 5th with the way he was holding his arm and moving around the mound, I think the staff should've done a better job of reading body language. However, the main issue with tendonitis is that it's painful; it's not something that results in a lot of extra damage or stress on the arm if you pitch on it. I'm not trying to justify the staff not evaluating Duke sooner, but I can understand where they were coming from.
and you have a pitcher who's had so many health issues and he hasn't pitched much in the last year, and it's cold, and he's wincing and saying "No I'm ok" - you. get. him. out. of. there. He'll sulk off and thank you tomorrow.
I watch Duke and Harden and think of how good Gaudin was when he wasn't hurting last year...and remember Street when he was throwing the heat...and it makes me feel as if we got cheated. Yeah I am childish like that.
Do you realize most pitchers have maybe 4-6 good years in them? And those are the ones that are relatively healthy and good. It's just the reality of the sport.
the second time through the order, he did great - I would think/hope his skeptics would grant that he put those "can he get through the order more than once" concerns to rest at least tonight. Can he get through 6 innings this season...another question entirely. Grrrr...
Go A's!

i was thinking the exact same thing!!
Jjjsixsix - April 4, 2008
is it me
or does he sound more excited this time?
maybe the victory got him worked up?
Hegenberger Road - April 4, 2008
Nice
just got back from the game Duke looked good hope he is not hurt bad Street needs to go spend some time in Sac he looks bad
ChrisB - April 4, 2008
You live next door to the Coliseum?
Nico - April 4, 2008
under the BART station maybe?
Amnesiac - April 4, 2008
No, that's TimTimTimbo,
if you get my drift.
Nico - April 4, 2008
+a whole lot more than 1
doctorK - April 4, 2008
He lives in his van!
"just got back"=in the parking lot at the Coli, sleeping off the beer.
One won lost won - April 4, 2008
Look at the batting averages...
of our lineup after tonight's game. Maybe Geren should just reverse the order for tomorrow's game. ;-)
FoolshGame22 - April 4, 2008
Let's face it - Ryan does better when
he doesn't have the pressure of being the only Sweeney in the lineup.
Nico - April 4, 2008
apparently, the double-Sweeney mojo...
doesn't work for Mike.
FoolshGame22 - April 4, 2008
I like Mike
even when he's not hittin' too well. Even his outs give me a feeling that he will be a significant contributor this year.
One won lost won - April 4, 2008
He JUST missed a two-run double
in the first inning - he was mad that he didn't wait longer on one of Byrd's nothingballs.
Nico - April 4, 2008
I thought Street actually looked a lot better
than before. 91 MPH on the fastball, broke off several very good sliders, made one mistake. I'm actually encouraged.
Nico - April 4, 2008
He did have better stuff than on Wednesday
but still, 3 HRs in 3 appearances by your closer is bad, bad news.
Soaker - April 4, 2008
What's interesting is Ken Korach's note that
coming into this season, Street had allowed only 12 HRs in his career (3 years). So he has NOT been "HR prone" until this week.
Nico - April 4, 2008
Great win but...
Street and Buck look awful right now.
fansince1980 - April 4, 2008
He should go to a lighter bat
maybe the Red Sox switched his bats in Tokyo!!! His are now seven ounces heavier, but he just thinks he's "tired".!!!
8^0
One won lost won - April 4, 2008
I see Matt Holiday is 1-for-14
Are the Rockies going to send him to AAA??
Still, can't argue. It's not as if Buck is making "good contact" or "loud outs".
One won lost won - April 4, 2008
If you send Buck to AAA, the message is
"Get tight when you hit an 0-13 skid because you're one bad game away from getting shipped out." He's scuffling - and he'll be fine. The A's are doing all the right things: Give him a day off, work with him in the batting cage, then lay off him and keep putting him in the lineup. He's not going to hit .000 this season.
Nico - April 4, 2008
Again, don't agree tonight about Street
He looked one pitch (to a great hitter) away from his old self. Buck looked lost, lunging - I wanted to replace his bat with a red and white cane.
Nico - April 4, 2008
I agree...
Street didn't look bad tonight. One mistake, with a 4 run lead. Didn't matter. Had it been a two-run lead, I might have had different thoughts.
FoolshGame22 - April 4, 2008
Let's hope that what you discern
is that which is true!
One won lost won - April 4, 2008
listening to the radio recap
it seems clear that the turning point is A Cabrera's throw home in the 5th. Real momentum changer
Hegenberger Road - April 4, 2008
Not a ML play
a bonehead play...
If your club goes 91-71, you never make that kind of play.
If you make them every couple of games, it results in a 71-91 club....
Like Pittsburgh...
One won lost won - April 4, 2008
I agree - that play will cost Cleveland 20 games!
Nico - April 4, 2008
Barton seems slow
like slower than Frank Thomas. I think that contributed to the Emil brown double whoops in game one.
Future Ed - April 4, 2008
And
every pony hanging out in the stables........naaaaayyyy!
mrod - April 4, 2008
All those in favor: "Neigh!!!"
All those opposed: "Nay!!!!"
Um, ok...we're gonna need to vote again.
Nico - April 4, 2008
i don't think you really understand the difference between 91 and 71 win teams...
xbhaskarx - April 4, 2008
wellllllll
let's just say, it's symptomatic of losing ball clubs to make that kind of play.
However, I don't think Cleveland is a "losing" ball club. That mistake was an anomaly.
However, the 1977 Athletics seemed to make that kind of play about every third or fourth game.
One won lost won - April 4, 2008
Was the pitch to Hafner from Street...
a location mistake? Middle-in? Fastball?
notsellingjeans - April 4, 2008
It was up
I could be remembering wrong but I thought it was a changeup - but it could have been a fastball. Whichever it was, target was down, pitch was up.
Nico - April 4, 2008
It was a fastball
It was just a straight 3-2 fastball high in the zone which was crushed by Hafner.
Honestly, I had no problem with that pitch. You don't pussyfoot around with a guy when there's two strikes and you have a 4-run lead.
PaulThomas - April 4, 2008
If Street had come in with
3 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER and a couple saves, and then given up that solo HR and retired the other three as he did, everyone would be happy and serene. He looked fine tonight, whereas he really didn't look good Wednesday. So I feel cautiously optimistic, Hafner's bomb be damned.
Nico - April 4, 2008
the rangers tried to blow a 11-0 lead in the 9th inning to the angels, final score 11-6.
xbhaskarx - April 4, 2008
I saw that. I had to switch it off my browser
I guess Wash wanted to test his new pitcher they just got from Arizona.
That could have been a real bad thing psychologically, if the Rangers had gotten tied in the 9th!
One won lost won - April 4, 2008
Blowing an 11-0 lead?
That never happens.
Nico - April 4, 2008
hmmm...
Our boys are tied for 2nd place. Now, that's more like it.
FoolshGame22 - April 4, 2008
Isn't Seattle 2-2?
Nico - April 4, 2008
my mistake...
still in the cellar. Texas and Seattle both 2-2. Keep forgeting we've played one than they have.
FoolshGame22 - April 4, 2008
I guess I just keep wanting to black out the memory...
of Huston's blown save against the Sox in Tokyo. After all, I was sleep-watching, anyway.
FoolshGame22 - April 4, 2008
What memory?
There was no blown save. There's no one named Brandon Moss. We're 2-2.
Nico - April 4, 2008
Curious...
Who should be leading off, if not Buck?
Rocktopus - April 4, 2008
I expect it will be Ellis Sat and Sun,
just because we're facing two LHP (C.C. and Cliff Lee). Against RHP, Hannahan wouldn't be too bad a choice. Or Ryan Sweeney - isn't he great? I've always thought so!
Nico - April 4, 2008
Lamar
notsellingjeans - April 4, 2008
Leading off?
For the 3-run HRs or for the stolen bases?
Nico - April 4, 2008

mrod - April 4, 2008

Henry Rodriguez tonite at Stockton: 5 IP, 3 H, 3BB, 1 ER, 8 K's

Gotta be a lotta pitches. But hey.
Nico - April 4, 2008

that Sean Doolittle was 4-4 and a double away from the cycle.

xbhaskarx - April 5, 2008
it was frickn freezing at the coliseum
I'll be back for tomorrow's game.
OaklandSi - April 4, 2008
I really wonder if the weather contributed to Duke's problems
That's why I thought it was probably his hip - but that weather can't be great for the arm either. He looked so awesome I just hope he can stay in the rotation. I've thought for years he could do it - c'mon, baseball gods, let the guy pitch!
Nico - April 4, 2008
Here, here mate!
Duke is absolutely my favorite Athletic and I was so happy to see him dealing tonite. Me hopes his ails is nothing more than cold weather and he bounces back for his next start. #58 rules the yard yo!!!!!!
mrod - April 4, 2008

you know, you're in for a 5-layer game. I would have stayed in the Westside Club. ;-)
FoolshGame22 - April 4, 2008

flipgatey3 - April 4, 2008

OaklandSi - April 4, 2008
i got lucky
girlfriend remembered to bring a blanket...i was right below you in 123, got lucky with some ebay tickets
flipgatey3 - April 4, 2008
Just got back from the game
Englishmajor - April 4, 2008
Colder than last year against the Angels...
the free blanket night giveaway? The wind was blowing that night and I was as cold as I ever remember being at a game in my entire life.
IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008
I was colder tonight
but I think I had gloves and a hoodie on that time, not tonight.
OaklandSi - April 4, 2008
I'm just glad that tomorrow is a day game. So it won't be cold.
I am excited to go to my first game of the year.
BTW? Why did everyone boo the trumpet puppet? I still plan to buy one for my expected Grandbaby.
IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008
People think it's a ripoff of the Rally Monkey
I think things like that become popular and beloved if they catch on among fans by chance -- like the Rally Monkey, or like singing "Sweet Caroline" at Fenway. This feels like the marketing department pushing it down our throats.
Englishmajor - April 4, 2008
Ah, now it makes sense
to boo a puppet!
BOO, SOCK WITH EYES - YOU SUCK!!!!!
Nico - April 4, 2008
I see your point.
But I remember when my girls were little. They got a kick out of bringing stuffed toys to the park that they had dressed in little A's T-shirts. So I am going to plunk down my 20 bucks quite happily.

flipgatey3 - April 4, 2008
Last time a guy had a biceps issue...
that was Harden and he never came back last year.
Oaktownflav - April 4, 2008
I am glad that
it's a bicep issue and not a hip. They said a Mild strain and I am going to hope that for once that is accurate.
IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008
yeah, I immediately associated "biceps tendonitis"
with Harden.
IN an interview Duke said he first felt it in the fifth inning, but in the sixth it really hurt very badly.
OaklandSi - April 4, 2008
Which is why YOU DON'T LISTEN TO THE PITCHER,
you TAKE HIM OUT the first time you know he's not feeling 100%. It cost Dan Meyer exactly one career that the A's listened to him when he said, "I'm fine." Duke should have come out in the 5th, damn it. It's when you throw while you're hurting that you really hurt yourself.
Nico - April 4, 2008
I hate to say it, but it's not that simple
I have more problems with the rehab regimens than I do with the initial steps taken when injury happens with our players.
baseb3383 - April 4, 2008
I do understand/agree but
body language is key.
Nico - April 4, 2008
Well I agree in that case
Something didn't seem right in the 5th with the way he was holding his arm and moving around the mound, I think the staff should've done a better job of reading body language. However, the main issue with tendonitis is that it's painful; it's not something that results in a lot of extra damage or stress on the arm if you pitch on it. I'm not trying to justify the staff not evaluating Duke sooner, but I can understand where they were coming from.
baseb3383 - April 4, 2008
I just think when it's this early in the season,
and you have a pitcher who's had so many health issues and he hasn't pitched much in the last year, and it's cold, and he's wincing and saying "No I'm ok" - you. get. him. out. of. there. He'll sulk off and thank you tomorrow.
Nico - April 4, 2008
well said Nico
Even my girlfriend said the same thing tonite while watching the game. Sheeeeesh!
mrod - April 4, 2008
You're right Nico.
It shows good character and spirit for Duke to want to stay in the game...but it wasn't a smart move.
IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008
Duke is a baller
and a Scorpio to boot. So you know he is gonna be the last one to "want out" of a ball game......
mrod - April 4, 2008
A SCORPIO?
Then he NEVER should have thrown in the 6th frame. Doesn't Bob Green know anything??????? Ugh!!!
Cindi
Nico - April 4, 2008

IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008

mrod - April 4, 2008
It's frustrating to everybody.
I watch Duke and Harden and think of how good Gaudin was when he wasn't hurting last year...and remember Street when he was throwing the heat...and it makes me feel as if we got cheated. Yeah I am childish like that.
IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008
You can thank Ken Macha
for using up Street's arm a couple of years ago now.....wah-wah-wah-wah........
mrod - April 4, 2008
Macha did use Street a lot...
but I don't like to lay this at Macha's door. ..we really have no way to know.
IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008
Of course we do!
Macha is the reason the universe is so out of balance! My god, don't you know anything???!!!!!!!

IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008

mrod - April 5, 2008
That's how pitching is though
Do you realize most pitchers have maybe 4-6 good years in them? And those are the ones that are relatively healthy and good. It's just the reality of the sport.
baseb3383 - April 4, 2008
Of course!
Just ask Rick Langford, Steve McCatty, Mike Norris, etc......they will all tell you the same thing.
mrod - April 5, 2008
Of course Billy Martin got 4-6 good years
out of those guys - in 1980-81, I believe it was.
Nico - April 5, 2008
exactly!
Billy Ball! Where you don't need no stinking closer!!!!

He looked soooooogood tonite and it would suck to high heaven if he was to be put on the shelf after one start. Cross your fingers......

I am crossing my fingers too...
and saying a prayer for Duke. He has had his share of trouble already.
IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008
word
again, he is hands down my favorite Athletic....
mrod - April 4, 2008
And while he obviously couldn't do better
the second time through the order, he did great - I would think/hope his skeptics would grant that he put those "can he get through the order more than once" concerns to rest at least tonight. Can he get through 6 innings this season...another question entirely. Grrrr...
Nico - April 4, 2008
It isn't a good sign that he couldn't make it through a game...
without getting hurt. It seems to me that pitchers in this era get hurt more often than they should.
IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008
This era being the A's clubhouse.
Nico - April 4, 2008
LOL
it feels like just the A's but it is all over the league.
IM4Oakgal - April 4, 2008
