Well, I’d sure like to tell you all what happened in the first three innings tonight, but I’m sorry, I have no idea. That’s because the game was preempted by Rex Hudler’s Inappropriate Interview Hour, where poor Misty May-Treanor was held captive in the broadcast booth where she was forced to answer such gems as:
“What do you do when the sand is hot?”
“How much money do you make?”
“Tell me about your family.”
“Did you know that some of the best beach volleyball is here in Southern California?”
“Would you like to touch my rally monkey?”
I may have inferred the last one, but the subtext was there.
Meanwhile, from what I was able to piece together from the B storyline, Eveland struggled through the first few innings, looking for all the world like he was fighting an injury, yet seemed to settle down for the next few innings. The Angels scored two in the second, and after getting a runner to third in the third with one out, the A’s somewhat strangely opted to walk Vlad (who Eveland dispatched in short order his first time around), which only accomplished putting an extra runner on base, something you don’t like to give the Angels. They scored one more in the inning, but were held at three runs until a sixth inning rally drove Eveland from the game as the Angels tacked on three more. They wouldn't need them; they would go on to win 6-1.
On the offensive side (and it was offensive again tonight), the A’s hit the ball hard, but came away empty until they were gifted a run by the second error of the night by the Angels’ rookie third baseman, which allowed a run to score on Sweeney, R’s single in the fifth. Baserunners were left at second and third that same inning when Santana struck out Suzuki to limit the damage, and aside from getting some hitters on late, the A’s really never had another chance to score. The A’s hitters looked light years away from their success in Monday’s contest; they struggled mightily against Santana. But to be fair, both last night and tonight’s pitchers for the Angels are a combined 10-0 to start the season, so the A’s offense isn’t the only one that has had trouble.
So for the first time in a while, the A’s are booted out of first place, with one game remaining in this series to earn a much-needed split. I will be back down in Anaheim tomorrow night as the A’s get one last shot at the Angels, with Duchscherer taking the mound against a pitcher to be named soon. Same time, same place, hopefully a different outcome. Oh, and if Casey Kotchman feels a little tired from running the bases tonight, he’s welcome to sit tomorrow; that would be great.

Adenhart tomorrow now
Trainman - April 30, 2008
Cool thanks...and THAT SUCKS!
baseballgirl - April 30, 2008
Did we face him in Spring Training?
pam5981 - April 30, 2008
I think
He pitched at least 4 innings against us and we got zippo
Trainman - April 30, 2008
Not if he's going on 3 days' rest...
which is what Vince said on the broadcast tonight.
I can’t imagine why TF the Angles would do that, but hey.
Elvez - April 30, 2008
He pitched 8 innings on Sunday and gave up an unearned run
Hopefully he lasts an inning and throws 85 pitches.
Knowing those “Fall in a bucket of ** and come out smelling like a rose” Angels, he will probably no hit us for 7 innings
Trainman - April 30, 2008
Yes!
The Angels WERE dumb enough to think that he’s actually pitching well in AAA!
OK, guys, time to unload on this dork…
PaulThomas - April 30, 2008
In theory
Since he’s on 3 days rest. The ideal situation would be that he has a very bad case of the nerves and walks three or four and hits a batter or two and gets hammered.
I would imagine he’s on a pitch count so we need to get to him early and often. We are going to need to score for Duke.
I will be there for the win
Trainman - April 30, 2008
where'd you hear Adenhart?
MLB.com is showing Moseley (not that that means a whole lot); I’d heard Nick Green earlier this week… and, Adenhart isn’t on their 40-man roster, but I suppose they could move Escobar to the 60-day DL since he’s not coming back.
FoolshGame22 - April 30, 2008
On Angels radio
and Robert Buan also said same thing
Trainman - April 30, 2008
DiGiovanna has it in the L.A. Times
(Link)
Soaker - April 30, 2008
damn... I thought we'd walk outta there with a split (at least)
but, now, I’m not so sure.
FoolshGame22 - April 30, 2008
The A's faced him in ST
so they have seen him before.
Even though it was ST, he fooled all of our hitters that faced him for 4 innings, I think they got 1 hit but the main thing is they know what he throws and hopefully they can smack the crap out of him
Trainman - April 30, 2008
maybe it's selective memory, but...
it seems to me that the A’s have a poor track record against most, if not all, rookie pitchers. So, it probably doesn’t matter that it’s Adenhart instead of Green, except that Adenhart is projected to be a stud (who has already had limited success against our not-exactly-overwhelming lineup).
FoolshGame22 - April 30, 2008
All I know is we have to score 1st
It is depressing getting behind in the first few innings but that’s baseball I guess.
Duke has good numbers against Anaheim but I am sure most of them are in relief of course and he is going to have to go thru their lineup hopefully at least 3 times and with minimal damage
Trainman - April 30, 2008
Adenhart will be going on three days' rest, I think
Cotroneo mentioned that during the broadcast
OaklandSi - May 1, 2008
Misty May
Whatever the outcome of tomorrow’s game, at least I won’t have to listen to Phys and Hud get all ga-ga on the air again for a while. I think I lost a few dozen IQ points listening to it.
IowaA'sFan - April 30, 2008
Just a few dozen!!?!?!?!
That was among the most terrible things I have ever seen in a ballgame.
baseballgirl - April 30, 2008
It couldn't have been worse than
three innings listening to Lew Wolff.
iglew - April 30, 2008
At least that was just boring
and not 17 ways of creepy!!!
baseballgirl - April 30, 2008
Is "Misty May" her real name?
Sounds like a porno name.
iglew - May 1, 2008
She got married, so now it's Misty May-Treanor.
Slightly less porn star-y.
danmerqury - May 1, 2008
Actually,
that moniker enhances the porniness.
alox - May 1, 2008
Anyone else read any of Tim Cockey's "Hearse" novels?
IIRC there’s a character named “Misty Dew” in one of them.
PaulThomas - May 1, 2008
[who is a stripper]
Forgot that that might be pertinent info.
PaulThomas - May 1, 2008
Yes, but . . . .
. . . .”Would you like to touch my rally monkey?” gets my vote for comment of the day and perhaps even week or month. I’m strongly considering making it my new sig.
camperdog - May 1, 2008
The funny thing is
I don’t actually think most beach volleyball players are that attractive. I guess it’s just more proof that they have no taste…
Although I’ve never really liked that “chiselled” look on anyone… I guess you just see more of it with them.
PaulThomas - April 30, 2008
As with all athletes,
what’s most attractive about them is their energy and confidence.
I remember noticing, when I used to follow college volleyball, two distinct body types in the sport, and I found it interesting how different school inclined toward different types. The two top teams then were Stanford and Nebraska. All of the players were fit, of course, but the Stanford girls all had the lean, “chiseled” look, while most of the Nebraska girls were thicker and sturdier. I wonder if it’s a coast vs inland thing. I think you’re right that the beach volleyball players are generally thinner than the non-beach players.
I think I did like chiseled when I was your age, but I’m old enough now that I’ve been attracted to pretty much every size, shape and color at one time or another. Now I like short, dark and curvaceous, which is good because that’s what my wife is.
iglew - May 1, 2008
Funny how tastes change over time.
I don’t find athletic hard body girls all that appealing. I appreciate the curves a whole lot more. I used to find short blonds very appealing, but I soon gravitated towards latin girls. I ended up marrying one. Something about those doe eyed girls with an olive complexion makes my heart palpitate and my palms sweat! Of course my wife insists on exclusivity on pain of slow death. I believe her too. She’s funny that way.
alox - May 1, 2008
I was at the game tonight, and the whole inning my friend and I kept looking down into their booth and saying “poor Misty is still there with them”
drmmerchk - April 30, 2008
Cable-less, wi-fi-less LAXile was at the Big A (-Hole)
last night to see Smitty’s CG, and even though I feared the Santana effect would mean a loss for our boys, I was very happy to see the A’s on broadcast tv tonight. Then Rex Hudler started interviewing Misty McReady May and I almost went into a freaking frenzy and then my brain died. That was the most amazingly stupid thing I have ever seen on tv, and I’ve watched a couple seasons of Temptation Island, many episodes of Teletubbies, and Sabado Gigante reruns.
LAXile - May 1, 2008
did you have a donor card?
if only your brain died, we can part out the rest.
FoolshGame22 - May 1, 2008
Hudler would find it an improvement
LAXile - May 1, 2008
I was about to say
Now you can be an Angels fan…but an Angels announcer would be even more appropriate.
Englishmajor - May 1, 2008
Sheesh...
They have a pretty kick back set of games ahead of them, too. The Orioles, Royals, AND Tampa Bay.
surfinsushi - April 30, 2008
yeah, the Orioles and the Rays are pushovers...
they should sweep those series.
FoolshGame22 - April 30, 2008
Yeah.
too bad our first series is against the RANGERS!
pam5981 - April 30, 2008
Those three teams
are a combined 42-39.
I’d argue that the A’s, with 6 of the next 9 after tomorrow against Texas (10-18, manager with head in guillotine), have an easier road ahead in the short term.
Soaker - April 30, 2008
The Rays are good
Royals are bad, Orioles are very bad.
mikeA - April 30, 2008
Oh I know
Orioles are 15-12, a way point on their way to 68-94. But the A’s also have them for 3 games between the two Texas series, so the A’s and the Angels are even in that respect.
It’s a great time to face Texas, though. The Rangers have given up 17 more runs than the second-worst team in baseball, the Pirates (TEX 177, PIT 160) and their overall staff WHIP is 1.727.
Soaker - April 30, 2008
Yup, we need to take advantage
May is looking tough.
mikeA - April 30, 2008
Tough? Or chiseled?
The Dogfather - May 1, 2008
Scioscia had some comments in OC Register in February about Adenhart
“There (are) a lot of reasons to get excited about him – his makeup on the mound, his stuff,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “He has a terrific arm. He’s got a live fastball with terrific action. He’s got a changeup that is a big major-league pitch where it is right now and a terrific curveball. I think one thing with Nick is understanding how to put pitches together. As he gets more experience, he’s understanding that more and more.”
Adenhart’s talent has been obvious for awhile. As a high school senior, he was considered one of the top high school pitchers in the country, projected as a top 10 pick in the 2004 draft with a scholarship to North Carolina lined up as an option.
But he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow in May, a month short of the draft. The Angels took a chance on him anyway, getting first-round talent with a 14th-round pick, paying him top dollar (a $710,000 bonus) to spurn the Tar Heels and then crossing their fingers as Adenhart rehabilitated from reconstructive elbow surgery.
He spent much of the next year at the Angels’ training complex in Arizona, rehabbing his elbow and making sure his learning curve didn’t stall by watching older pitchers like Dustin Moseley, Matt Hensley, Ben Weber and Greg Jones come through the complex.
“I was 18 years old and I’m rehabbing with guys who are in their mid 20s,” Adenhart said. “I got veteran tutelage early. Once I got playing, I’d already learned a lot about what it meant to be a professional from those guys.
“You see how guys handle their business and you learn what it takes.”
Moseley didn’t know Adenhart’s backstory when he first saw him in Arizona. But he recognized his talent.
“I just thought his maturity level was off the charts,” Moseley said. “I knew he looked young, but he didn’t act young. He didn’t talk a whole lot, but he listened and he asked questions.
“Then when I saw him start throwing, the first thing I thought was how free and easy his delivery was. He just looked so smooth and the ball jumped out of his hand. I was just, ‘Wow.’”
Trainman - April 30, 2008
I am sad. I feel like I am a curse since I was not at the Monday game, and both tonight and last night they couldn’t hit anything :(
I have tickets for tomorrow, which was the only game I have had tickets for prior to the series actually starting… so maybe my luck (and the A’s) will be a little better.
And I just wanted to say that I’ve noticed an increase in the loud/obnoxiousness of the Angel fans as this series has gone on. When I showed up last night they were very humbled from their spanking on Monday, but every inning that passed they have become more confident and thus, more annoying. It continued tonight. I really hope we score big early and often tomorrow to shut them back up!
drmmerchk - April 30, 2008
I thought I was the curse!!!
They scored 14 runs when I came, I missed Tues/Wed, and they can’t score anything! But I will be there tomorrow!!!!
baseballgirl - April 30, 2008
so tempting...
but, it’d be a CGV. lol
FoolshGame22 - April 30, 2008
so you're responsible?
OaklandSi - May 1, 2008
The Big A
I attended last summers drubbing of the Angels and enjoyed it immensely. However unlike our stadiums up north they do not monitor “seat relocaters.” Into the later innings as the locals bail, down come the more vocal fans to the better seats. And soon it is all loud, obnoxious Angel fans. It’s one thing to yell and be clever but just spouting off to be heard is another thing.
Of course that reminds me of Rivercats games as well.
DCinWC - May 1, 2008
I clicked off early. Saw the score this morning. Hope for split.
ak_A - May 1, 2008
so where is that fan from Monday's game
with the magic ball?
the A’s need him - and the ball - in the stands tonight!
OaklandSi - May 1, 2008
I think he's trying to cram The Rule Against Perpetuities,
...and wondering why he thought he could go to the game on Monday during Finals week.
As my old Dean liked to say: “The Law is a jealous mistress.”
The Dogfather - May 1, 2008
is The Law an Angels' fan?
OaklandSi - May 1, 2008
Good news to me
Chavez fielded ground balls and no setbacks were mentioned. I’m so excited to see him back at 3rd by June. If we can just stay in it until then, we’ve got a great chance. He definitely makes the lineup look better now that we don’t have that hole at 3B.

Adenhart's Mom Sent Him A Letter:
Someone in the Angels Clubhouse found it and posted it on the Net:
Dearest Nick:
I’m writing this slow because I know you can’t read fast. We don’t live where we did when you left home. Your Dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles of your home, so we moved.
I won’t be able to send you the address because the last Hagerstown family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so they wouldn’t have to change their address. This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine. I’m not sure it works so well, though. Last week I put a load of clothes in and pulled the chain. We haven’t seen them since.
The weather isn’t bad here. It only rained twice last week; the first time for three days and the second time for four days. About that coat you wanted me to send; your Uncle Cleatus said it would be too heavy to send in the mail with the buttons on, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets. Bubba locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were really worried because it took him two hours to get me and your father out.
Your sister had a baby this morning, but I haven’t found out what it is yet so I don’t know if you are an aunt or uncle. The baby looks just like your brother. Uncle Bobby Ray fell into a whiskey vat last week. Some men tried to pull him out but he fought them off and drowned. We had him cremated, he burned for three days. Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pickup truck. Butch was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your other two friends were in the back. They drowned because they couldn’t get the tailgate down.
There isn’t much more news at this time. Nothing much out of the normal has happened.
Your Favorite Aunt,
Mom

SprungOnSports (Long Island): How do you think Nick Adenhart will do right away at the big league level now that he’s been brought up?
Trainman - May 1, 2008
OK, third time is the charm
He’s pitching on three day’s rest which is, to be kind, one of the wierder decisions I’ve seen in a long time. Sort of like riding around your spring training camp on a segway, but weirder
Trainman - May 1, 2008
So when Chavy comes back, who's likely the odd man out?
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - May 1, 2008
Hannahan probably
Murphy is more versatile around the IF and hits well against lefties
