I apologize if this is getting anybody down, but this game is my tribute to my recently deceased buddy, Dave Seibel. A joke he used to tell was this: “The best pie I ever had was jess pie.” So we ask him, what’s ‘jess pie?’ And he says, “When I was down in the south, I used to hang out with this black family, the Joneses, and mana Jones made the greatest pies. I asked her one night. ‘How do you do it? What’s in this stuff?’ And she, somewhat abashed, replied, ‘Well, it’s jess pie.’”
How glad I am that on this friday night Im not out with a good looking gal. No, good people of AN, on a night when most other 24 year olds are out and about painting the town red I am here at home watching a baseball game and chatting with y’all.
I got a bit of sunscreen in my eyes at the game yesterday
It hurts. I thought of it as an homage to my fellow Scandinavian-American, Dan Johnson. We have two possible skin tones; fishbelly white and cherry red.
the core of the team can walk but cant hit the ball. Im talking about alot of fastballs catching alot of the plate. I know Zuke, Brown and others are carryiing more then their load. I guess i thought Cust and Barton would be hitting a little better to start the year.
Didn’t run hard, didn’t go after Ellis, just kind of tailed off, jogging, into right center field. Happy to see it, but man that’s pathetic with the game on the line. You’ve got to try to take Elly out on that play …
I noticed it at the game yesterday for the first time yesterday and I’m noticing it again tonight. BoCro looks off balance and lunging at everything. Like the bad old days. How about a day off for Bobby?
but buck has more upside than ellis… we are rebuilding right now… let’s be honest we aren’t going to make the playoffs… ellis is not in our long term plans so we should move him for a young 3b who can mash
I agree… we are screwed with chavy, murphy, or hannahan at 3b… we need to trade for a young 3b who can mash… let’s move ellis while he has value before he declines because he has value and we aren’t going to compete this year
Because of all the home runs he hit last year and still would like to see them but the fact of the matter is he looks like a single A hitter there who is lost and cannot even hit a fastball any more. If it was not for his walks, he would be gone already.
It would be great if he gets it together but it does not look good.
Good God almighty-- it's too early for a game like that
All i can say is that if they’re going to win when they get one hit after the first inning—and the opponent threatens in every inning from the 6th on, well maybe something special is going on here.
Brilliant strategy by street to walk Ichiro and take the bat out of Lopez’ hands—lol.
Lopez was 4-4 and hitting the ball well, and they asked him to sac bunt. He popped it up to Barton.
Then Ibanez hit a lazy fly ball to CF that Davis ran down with ease.
Beltre hit a solid grounder, but Crosby made a fantastic play to end it.
The only part I really had an issue with was giving Ichiro! second base, because it put a whole lot of pressure on Street that was unnecessary – Ichiro! scored from 2nd on a single, but not from first.
I don’t care if the club is re-building. You got to keep one guy who’s worth buying the ticket for and that guy is Ellis. Having said that … the Giants could really, really use Ellis. With their starting pitching and Vizquel/Ellis up the middle…
What is it with the negativity with some of you people. This team has started a rebuilding year 15-9, we’re loaded with good young arms up and down the system, we have one of the best young catchers in the game, a stud CF maturing down in AAA and we got Frank back. Life is good. Try and enjoy it for a change.
Oh. Good times so far but let's not get too extreme either way.
The offense appears to be somewhat questionable and the “D” is horrible. I’m very happy that we are winning but our “D” needs to improve before we can consider ourselves a contender.
This doesn't really have anything to do with winning
I said this team would play around 500 ball and I still think that will be the case. The point is we’re rebuilding and doing a lot of good things in the process. I’ve seen both our A and AAA teams play this year and have no doubt this franchise is headed for it’s 3rd glory era. Just enjoy this season for what it is because there’s going to be plenty of high expectation seasons in the years to come.
It’s hard to measure how good one player on a defense is, but it’s trivially easy to measure how good a whole defense is. Just divide hits+errors by balls in play.
The A’s defense is very good. Most balls in play become outs. That’s all that counts, not how pretty you look doing it.

the core of the team can walk but cant hit the ball. Im talking about alot of fastballs catching alot of the plate. I know Zuke, Brown and others are carryiing more then their load. I guess i thought Cust and Barton would be hitting a little better to start the year.
asfaninpismobeach - April 25, 2008
So would they have watched tape of Baek before this series ?
green star oakland - April 25, 2008
Not to state the obvious or anything..
But this is pretty much a game we have to win. We get Bedard and Felix the next two days.
lenscrafters - April 25, 2008
Are they better than Baek?
WaddellCanseco - April 25, 2008
Nah...
Baek is immortal.
lenscrafters - April 25, 2008
Take out Brown and leave in Cust?
asfaninpismobeach - April 25, 2008
Cust is out, Rajai in (CF)
Nico - April 25, 2008
Gameday is shit
said Brown was out
asfaninpismobeach - April 25, 2008
Maybe they were anticipating his next AB
Nico - April 25, 2008
think Emil is out cust in LF?
drink409 - April 25, 2008
nope
gameday is definitely wrong

Rajai is in center field
baseballgirl - April 25, 2008
Go to Embree vs. Ibanez
One batter assignment.
Nico - April 25, 2008
But Embree's not a LOOGY. He's a well rounded man.
WaddellCanseco - April 25, 2008
Uh-huh
Nico - April 25, 2008
Hannahan would have had that
Amnesiac - April 25, 2008
If you're an announcer..
you’re juuuust waiting…
juuust waiting….
for the opportunity to say, “That ball handcuffed Hanahan!” :)

Rajai used to be the lead in a Boy Band
called themselves the Rajai Quartet

Please, Alan. 2-1, okay.

C'mon, Alan!
3-2.

Shit!
Not a bad pitch, though.

Embree won't face Beltre

3-2 coming up.

paradox - April 25, 2008
As soon as I realized Cust wasn't in CF,
I felt ok.
Nico - April 25, 2008
Beltre only 1-for-12 vs Embree
and he flied out on the first pitch. Go A’s!
One won lost won - April 25, 2008
Thanks for stealing my thunder
Damn!
sprtsnwyn - April 25, 2008
He threw it right down the middle so Beltre would hit it to CF: genius
mikeA - April 25, 2008
Beltre 1-12 against Embree
before that at bat. Still got the lead.
sprtsnwyn - April 25, 2008
IMO, Geren has managed perfectly -
leaving Eveland in for the first out, then going to Casilla for Sexson, getting in Embree for Ibanez and leaving him for Beltre.
Nico - April 25, 2008
Sorry!
Just thinkin’ about the people following on “GameDay”.

sprtsnwyn - April 25, 2008
Honestly, from not catching fly balls to LF,
to missing cutoff men in RF, to making poor throws from SS, to going down 18 in a row against bad pitchers – if we win, it’s a gift.
Nico - April 25, 2008
I give up
not gonna listen, watch, or watch.
A’s haven’t stranded runners, but still, not playing well.
One won lost won - April 25, 2008
Haven't had any to strand in awhile.
mikev - April 25, 2008
I take it you missed the first inning
Amnesiac - April 25, 2008
isn't LOB kind of a silly stat?
a team with a high OBP should leave a bunch of runners on?
skutch - April 25, 2008
It's silly only when...
...bunches of runs are being scored. Then no one cares how many you leave on base.
FormerHuntsvilleStar - April 25, 2008

you’re still taking the right fraction of your chances.

paradox - April 25, 2008
Brown looks horrible
so far
Up in the zone or balls
Trainman - April 25, 2008
I don't mean this to be too harsh, but
if you go to your bullpen early too much, you wind up having to pitch guys like Brown in the 8th sharp or not.
Nico - April 25, 2008
6'4 monsters that throw 98?
I’m okay with guys like that pitching the 8th.
mikev - April 25, 2008
what happened to the kinder, gentler, nico?
ak_A - April 25, 2008

asfaninpismobeach - April 25, 2008
Seven consecutive saves.....
Hot Cup Joe - April 25, 2008
I don't think he fully recovered from the
nerve problem he had in his elbow
Trainman - April 25, 2008
DONT GET CARRIED AWAY PEOPLE
bocro still sucks at hitting and murphy showed why we need to trade for a 3b who can hit…i still say trade ellis for rockies’ ian stewart
johnjahafanclub - April 25, 2008
Uh, then what would we do at 2B?
mikev - April 25, 2008
Murphy!
Elvez - April 25, 2008
move murphy there
who cares… a young slugging 3b would be better than ellis hitting going forward
johnjahafanclub - April 25, 2008
I'd rather trade Buck to the ChiSox for Josh Fields.
mikev - April 25, 2008
interesting idea
but buck has more upside than ellis… we are rebuilding right now… let’s be honest we aren’t going to make the playoffs… ellis is not in our long term plans so we should move him for a young 3b who can mash
johnjahafanclub - April 25, 2008
As much as I like Buck
Carlos Gonzalez is coming soon, and let’s be honest – Buck hasn’t ever played more than 100 games in a season.
He’s brittle.
mikev - April 25, 2008
Chavy will be back in a month or two
Raymond St. Martin (Saint) - April 25, 2008
and then get hurt in after 2 weeks
chavy is done
johnjahafanclub - April 25, 2008
If thats true we are alot worse with Murph/Hannahan
Syphon - April 25, 2008
???
I agree… we are screwed with chavy, murphy, or hannahan at 3b… we need to trade for a young 3b who can mash… let’s move ellis while he has value before he declines because he has value and we aren’t going to compete this year
johnjahafanclub - April 25, 2008
Chavy makes this team better...
dunno why all the hate.
Syphon - April 25, 2008
So you'd rather have
Stewart and Murphy than Ellis and Murphy?
HigherPie - April 25, 2008
absolutely
i’d rather have one guy who can mash and one guy who can’t than two guys who can’t hit
johnjahafanclub - April 25, 2008
Cust needs a home!
skutch - April 25, 2008
Japan is going to be Custs home soon
Watch!
asfaninpismobeach - April 25, 2008
I think we all loved Cust
Because of all the home runs he hit last year and still would like to see them but the fact of the matter is he looks like a single A hitter there who is lost and cannot even hit a fastball any more. If it was not for his walks, he would be gone already.
It would be great if he gets it together but it does not look good.
Trainman - April 25, 2008
Street Was Pitching BUT:
Crosby “Bones”, gets the save.
Raymond St. Martin (Saint) - April 25, 2008
Huston knows exactly how lucky he is
He just called Crosby “Bones”, so sweet.
Englishmajor - April 25, 2008
Good God almighty-- it's too early for a game like that
All i can say is that if they’re going to win when they get one hit after the first inning—and the opponent threatens in every inning from the 6th on, well maybe something special is going on here.
Brilliant strategy by street to walk Ichiro and take the bat out of Lopez’ hands—lol.

ak_A - April 25, 2008
So.
What’d I miss?
pam5981 - April 25, 2008
Same old same old
green star oakland - April 25, 2008
We won! That is all you need to worry about tonight.
ohtobe21likehuston - April 25, 2008
I caught the bottom of the 9th on the radio.
I think Huston could hear me yelling at him.
pam5981 - April 25, 2008
Huston didn't look bad
The only really bad pitch he made was the 3-2 changeup to Ichiro! that missed by a LOT.
mikev - April 25, 2008
Ok.
Since I didn’t actually see it, I’ll believe you. This time.
pam5981 - April 25, 2008
he got helped by Seattle being dumb.
The only part I really had an issue with was giving Ichiro! second base, because it put a whole lot of pressure on Street that was unnecessary – Ichiro! scored from 2nd on a single, but not from first.
mikev - April 25, 2008
Please Don't Talk About Trading Ellis
I don’t care if the club is re-building. You got to keep one guy who’s worth buying the ticket for and that guy is Ellis. Having said that … the Giants could really, really use Ellis. With their starting pitching and Vizquel/Ellis up the middle…
solotar - April 25, 2008
This place never changes
What is it with the negativity with some of you people. This team has started a rebuilding year 15-9, we’re loaded with good young arms up and down the system, we have one of the best young catchers in the game, a stud CF maturing down in AAA and we got Frank back. Life is good. Try and enjoy it for a change.
sactownbull - April 25, 2008
Who was being negative?
ohtobe21likehuston - April 25, 2008
A lot of people
mikeA - April 25, 2008
Shame on "a lot of people" then.
ohtobe21likehuston - April 25, 2008
Good point Sac
when teams start winning its tough not to build high hopes though
asfaninpismobeach - April 25, 2008
Some cats in here have us trading half the team lol
Chavez is just going to come back and get hurt, Crosby still sucks, on and on
sactownbull - April 25, 2008
Oh. Good times so far but let's not get too extreme either way.
The offense appears to be somewhat questionable and the “D” is horrible. I’m very happy that we are winning but our “D” needs to improve before we can consider ourselves a contender.
With that said… 1st place, baby!
ohtobe21likehuston - April 25, 2008
This doesn't really have anything to do with winning
I said this team would play around 500 ball and I still think that will be the case. The point is we’re rebuilding and doing a lot of good things in the process. I’ve seen both our A and AAA teams play this year and have no doubt this franchise is headed for it’s 3rd glory era. Just enjoy this season for what it is because there’s going to be plenty of high expectation seasons in the years to come.
sactownbull - April 25, 2008
This is really, really not true
Not true in a massive way.
It’s hard to measure how good one player on a defense is, but it’s trivially easy to measure how good a whole defense is. Just divide hits+errors by balls in play.
The A’s defense is very good. Most balls in play become outs. That’s all that counts, not how pretty you look doing it.
PaulThomas - April 25, 2008
It's funny this conversation is happening .............
As ESPN is showing their top 10 plays which includes two Oakland defensive plays.
sactownbull - April 25, 2008
That's one guy.
