A's are already up 6-1 as they drove Francisco Liriano to the showers. Just need Greg Smith to shut the Twins down now.
How good is it to see Frank Thomas in the lineup again?
Sorry again for the downtime. Been a miserable experience for all of us at SBN.
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!

THE BIG HURT BROKE AN!
5Aces - April 24, 2008
You can't blame thomas.
The site was down last night too. I blame davis.
Future Ed - April 24, 2008
Or perhaps
SBN is racist?
Poll: Who’s more racist:
- Beane
- SBN
HigherPie - April 24, 2008
Danica...
She loves races…
tresselfan - April 24, 2008
Blame?
I was impressed. When one guy has such a feared bat that a whole nation of sports blogs collapses by his signing-that’s a mean feat!
5Aces - April 24, 2008
Go SBN! Go servers! Go Hurt!
Go A’s!
HigherPie - April 24, 2008
Whats up all?
The Big Hurt is back and the A’s are leading.
asfaninpismobeach - April 24, 2008
Good thing the server problems happened
on a slow day.
HigherPie - April 24, 2008
yeah
paradox - April 24, 2008
Oh, there's the game thread.
Thank blez!
mikev - April 24, 2008
whew!
AN Withdrawl symptoms == not good
calgbear - April 24, 2008
Glad that Frank is back and AN, too!
Thanks for getting AN back up. I LOVE having Frank back in Oakland.
LongTimeFan - April 24, 2008
Raise your hand if you like the Big Hurt!
mikeA - April 24, 2008
Jason Stark
and other MLB Scouts seem to think Frank is DUN.
Colorado Fan - April 24, 2008
leave out an "N"?
I predict lots of BBs and HRs for the Big Hurt!
mikeA - April 24, 2008
Works for me
Colorado Fan - April 24, 2008
Dusting off my Hurt bobblehead!
Buck Turgidson - April 24, 2008
thank you lordy
i was going crazy!!
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
Man, this is a hell of a lineup against a lefty
Buck Turgidson - April 24, 2008
< raises hand >
oblique - April 24, 2008
All right! Let's Go A's!
Fun game. Dern I missed the threads.
paradox - April 24, 2008
Poppy says Frank is missing his rebar.
Jennifer - April 24, 2008
It didn't qualify as a carry on from toronto?
mikev - April 24, 2008
Frank's rebar travels by armoured van, I bet
stormtown - April 24, 2008
Why was he cut?
Low average? Noticeably sluggish bat speed?
paradox - April 24, 2008
Quasi-shady tactics by ownership who don't want him to get 360 ABs and hit his 10M option for next year?
mikev - April 24, 2008
wow
That’s it? Stupid.
paradox - April 24, 2008
So, um, somebody tell Mike Sweeney that he doesn't go first to third EVERY TIME.
Especially when it’ a grounder to the infield.
mikev - April 24, 2008
Back to back bunt singles
COME ON!!!
HigherPie - April 24, 2008
As expected, this "aggressive base running"
leads to lots of extra outs … Denorfia in the 1st (who would subsequently have scored from 2nd anyway), and now Sweeney on the error (although with him on 2nd and Frank on 1st that might have been a triple play by Emil).
green star oakland - April 24, 2008
Sweeney should NEVER be attempting
aggressive base running, not with his knee issues because the chances are that he isn’t going to make it. The Denorfia play was just stupid because it was just clear they were going to hit the cutoff man. I appreciate the attempt to be aggressive, but you need to be aggressive when it makes sense.
Tyler Bleszinski - April 24, 2008
I still don't see much hit and run
paradox - April 24, 2008
someone tell me what's happening
not tv today.
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
Lariano was ripped by the A's
6 runs, the Big Hurt walked. Leadoff HR for MN a distant twinge, thankfully.
paradox - April 24, 2008
"ripped" not quite accurate
3 walks and about a hundred singles.
monkeyball - April 24, 2008

Hyperbole is the life blood fo sports writing.
paradox - April 24, 2008
There is an A in smallball!
2 of them, even!
mikev - April 24, 2008
So, wow, can it really be true that the Jays are gonna pay Frank to be our DH?
I, mean, that seems really dumb for them. Pretty F’n cool for us!
Buck Turgidson - April 24, 2008
dp!
Buck Turgidson - April 24, 2008
woohoo!
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
Kubel on 3rd
Buck Turgidson - April 24, 2008
i really don't like kubel!
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
I love the A's
I lose internet access for a couple of days, I come back, and Frank Thomas is in the lineup and we are suddenly the Uber platoon team.
ChadGod - April 24, 2008
i don't think it's are a platoon team, some just resting
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
uh, yes; yes, it is a platoon team
monkeyball - April 24, 2008
It's weird when both halves of the DH platoon are righties
mikev - April 24, 2008
it's only weird when you don't realize MSweeney is playing 1B today
monkeyball - April 24, 2008
I really doubt that he'll get a signifigant amount of time there
His back and his knee are really gonna hurt him in the field I thnk
mikev - April 24, 2008
you could be right
I expect that Beane/Geren will throw him out there pretty often, until he either breaks, is traded, or stops hitting.
monkeyball - April 24, 2008
... and that the signing of Rajai (and DL'ing of Buck) likely means Frank and Cust are a platoon tandem
monkeyball - April 24, 2008
I would assume Cust and Frank will both play against RHs.
mikeA - April 24, 2008
probably maybe
I think we’re going to see a ton of mixing and matching based on splits and “ownership” of pitchers.
And on inflating potential trade values.
monkeyball - April 24, 2008
uh, okay!
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
Platoons ah plenty
:-)
micdog2001 - April 24, 2008
AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
This day is out of control.
Jennifer - April 24, 2008
One hope
I hope the signing of Frank Thomas doesn’t take any playing time from Barton by Sweeney getting starts at first (like today).
Giving Dale a day off once every couple of weeks is fine. Starting Sweeney at first against every lefty will really suck.
HigherPie - April 24, 2008
I'd expect Sweeney to play 1B in about 2/3 of starts vs LHSPs pre-ASB ...
... at which point, he’ll be traded (if he’s hitting well) or relegated to PH duties (if not).
monkeyball - April 24, 2008
Getaway day for the Twins
Nice weather, good opportunity to stack up all the old right handed bats.
I don’t think it’s something we’ll see alot of.
Buck Turgidson - April 24, 2008
Thanks for getting the server back, Blez
This is much, much better. Things happen, don’t worry about it.
paradox - April 24, 2008
They're still working on making the fix permanent
This is the worst outage we’ve ever had.
But thank you for the thanks.
Tyler Bleszinski - April 24, 2008
they tried to fix the search, didn't they.
between that and Hurt coming back, the servers were doomed.
mikev - April 24, 2008
They've been working on the search for a while
But essentially we upgraded the RAM on our servers and apparently some of the RAM was bad.
Tyler Bleszinski - April 24, 2008
Someone tipped their server, didn't they?
Jennifer - April 24, 2008
He didn't say they were upgrading the COW on their servers
PaulThomas - April 24, 2008
bad ram?
I knew Nico was somehow to blame.
monkeyball - April 24, 2008
Davis doubled his avg. with a base hit
asfaninpismobeach - April 24, 2008
Keeping Barton in the lineup.
They’ll cut Sweeney when Buck comes back, no?
jefeboy - April 24, 2008
or when Duke comes back Saturday?
mikev - April 24, 2008
Braden is on the 25-man roster.
The Dogfather - April 24, 2008
oh yeah.. send Braden back down and push DiNardo to the pen
mikev - April 24, 2008
that sucks, i love M. Sweeney, don't like Thomas all that much
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
how? why?
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
diva! swisher was the only one that kept him sane.
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
interesting
i never heard any of that. i don’t think it will be a problem though.
for the record, i love sweeney. i hope they both stay
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
I think Cust is the odd man out
Sweeney makes way more contact and is valuable in clubhouse to youngsters
Trainman - April 24, 2008
change "think" to "wish"
If you truly think that, you haven’t been paying attention to Beane the last decade.
monkeyball - April 24, 2008
Don't wish it at all
I think that is maybe what is going to happen.
Trainman - April 24, 2008
not likely.
Beane’s not going to trade 4 years of Cust for 1 year of Sweeney, especially with Hurt back.
mikev - April 24, 2008
Yeah, you maybe right
there Mike
Trainman - April 24, 2008
cust to the outfield
r. sweeney or denorfia to AAA possibly…it would be easier to justify if either was playing poorly, but they are not doing bad at all
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
yeah right!
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
They are not going to keep 5 outfielders are they?
Buck
Cust
Brown
Deno
Sweeney
asfaninpismobeach - April 24, 2008
you forgot Davis
mikev - April 24, 2008
6 outfielders, lol
asfaninpismobeach - April 24, 2008
Hit and run!
paradox - April 24, 2008

paradox - April 24, 2008
gameday is acting funny
it says Chris D. is on first but doesn’t list his at-bat. It only says BroCro got out and Murphy is at-bat.
micdog2001 - April 24, 2008
there it goes
Norfy walked
micdog2001 - April 24, 2008
Woah, Davis is in the lineup?
I thought it would be, like, a minor league pickup, because he certainly has a lot of speedy upside, but hasn’t shown that he’s ready this year.
RenoTy - April 24, 2008
i have a feeling he will be DFAd soon enough
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
I agree man, Davis will not be here long
asfaninpismobeach - April 24, 2008
word
i mean, it’s a “flier” i guess. seemed kinda pointless.
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
Davis likely to go when Buck is back
I think there should be a pretty straight platoon in LF – Brown should never be in the lineup against a righty – his history and his splits already this year show that. Sweeney and Denorfia should split time, not necessarily platoon, in CF, and Buck stays in RF. If he doesn’t pick it up on his return, we get to see Gonzalez by June.
boilerdan - April 24, 2008
right
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
By DL-ing him Buck can also have a rehab stint in Sacramento to try to find his swing
green star oakland - April 24, 2008
sounds good to me
his swing looks looooong
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
sounds reasonable to me
Putting Emil in a strict platoon would really enable him to achieve the most success … and could potentially generate some trade value.
monkeyball - April 24, 2008
i knew you'd like that suggestion MB
and hard to say where you’re wrong
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
oh no! ron washington might be fired soon.
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
not his fault
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
Bring him back here to teach fielding
and pay him triple his last salary
He’s worth it
Sad to see him be a possible scapegoat for that team though
Trainman - April 24, 2008
i'm down
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
agree all the way 'round
Might not be the best career-track move for Wash to come back (he could get hung with a “failed as manager” tag)—but, then again, MLB loves to recycle managers once they’ve gotten their first invite.
monkeyball - April 24, 2008
Even if its just for the season
(with the expectation he’ll interview for managerial positions again in the off-season) he also had some rapport with Frank, no ?

monkeyball - April 24, 2008

Zonis - April 24, 2008
yeah
it’s a shame he was fun to watch his rookie year.
i don’t exactly mind the result today though….
dbeach13 - April 24, 2008
agreed
he’s allowed to pitch well against anyone but us
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
He had Tommy John
He has lost a good deal of velocity to this point and hasn’t regained his control like they’d hoped he would have by now. Its very possible he never regains either the velocity or the control, but also still possible he regains both. I sure hope so, he was amazing.
ChadGod - April 24, 2008
his slider

flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
I was suprised the other day when I read a quote from Beane
something like ” Greg Smith has the chance to be something very special” I didnt know the A’s were that high on this kid. I like it though
asfaninpismobeach - April 24, 2008
how special?
kirk sarloos special maybe?
dbeach13 - April 24, 2008
Thats what I thought man, but I guess they like him alot
asfaninpismobeach - April 24, 2008
no
better
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
3B?
Looks like we shouldn’t count on Chavez anytime before mid-season, if at all. I’d thought Hannahan would be a suitable replacement, but he’s been awful so far – offensively and defensively. Murphy isn’t a longterm solution either. Any ideas? Or are we stuck with this?
boilerdan - April 24, 2008
murphy
3b isn’t his best spot anyways from what i’ve read…he’s better suited to a ss/2b backup spot
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
Crede?....no thanks.
ChadGod - April 24, 2008
How about Josh Fields
Chicago is OBSESSED with Crede
Zonis - April 24, 2008
that
i can get on board with. fields could be awesome
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
What future prospects are there in minors at 3rd?
I still think Murphy is better than Hannahan. A scarecrow is better than hannahan has been of late.
Trainman - April 24, 2008
JESUS GUZMAN
he’s hitting .430 in double A right now
jshaw25 - April 24, 2008
how about Barton?
It was talked about before, right?
mikev - April 24, 2008
he was awful
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
so was Hannahan
mikev - April 24, 2008
agreed
and back to square one we are
flipgatey3 - April 24, 2008
that alone
would be one more reason to bring Washington back. Hell, look what he did with Chavez.
OrlandoAsFan - April 24, 2008
i really hope that hannahan can stay, it's probably just an April slump
just look at R. Howard hitting .181 start to his season, and having struck out 32 times in 83 at-bats
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - April 24, 2008
Not sure that's an entirely appropriate comparison ...
green star oakland - April 24, 2008

RenoTy - April 24, 2008
Question for AN
Would you trade Travis Buck for Josh Fields?
Zonis - April 24, 2008
Based on our 3B situation
Yes, I would
TexasAsfan - April 24, 2008
Don’t think CHI would do that. They’d take a young pitcher, though, i bet.
jefeboy - April 24, 2008
Yes.
Considering:
- the OF prospects in our system compared to the 3B prospects in our system
- the fact that I kinda doubt Chavez will ever play again
- the fact that Buck is constantly injured
I’d do that deal in a heartbeat.
mikev - April 24, 2008
Ian Stewart
What about this guy http://thebaseballcube.com/players/S/Ian-Stewart.shtml ?
I bet the rockies would take a young pitcher at this point…

Last I heard about Davis is that he has the potential to steal 40 bags/yr.
That’s a lot of potential, but is it worth the risk of keeping him on the roster all year?
RenoTy - April 24, 2008
Rajai Davis
Thinks he’s getting cut too. I like this new machiavellian roster management. Keep them all in fear of the axe.

I love seeing him have immense success at this level.

Question for salb918 and others...
When Buck gets off the DL, can we put him on the 25-Man Roster for 1 Day, and send him down to AAA then next? I want to see him regain form in Sacramento, and it would be nice to push back his Arbitration Eligibility to 2011.
So, when Buck is Eligible to come off the DL, “option” Ryan Sweeney down to AAA, with a gentlemen’s agreement that he’ll be brought back up ASAP. This gives us the chance keep our current roster intact.
Is this Possible?
Colorado Fan - April 24, 2008
That's a question for grover, devo, PT.
I’m not up on my roster rules.
salb918 - April 24, 2008
Two things
1. Buck can get his swing back in AAA as it is—he can spend up to 20 days with the club on a rehab assignment.
2. If the team really wants to push his free agency back a season, they can send him down to AAA as soon as he comes off the DL. It’s not required that the player be active on the MLB roster for a day first. Connor Robertson, last season, was DLed, missed about a month, then was activated and immediately optioned down. (And was then eventually waived, outrighted to Sacramento, and then traded to Arizona in the Haren deal. Pretty eventful season.)

77 pitches through 6. A’s still haven’t walked a batter in the series.

After watching Murphy's HR
I have offically decided I don’t like Hannahan. I know it’s only one hit but I just like murphy’s swing better. it was fast and compact and he still blasted it. Hannahan has a uber long swing but barely any pop (besides ups) as a results. It looks like he is going to fall down everytime he swings. plus his defense has been horrible lately.
micdog2001 - April 24, 2008

Angels
Could they have been any luckier this week against Boston? I mean, Beckett scratched the day of his start, so a AAA guy fills in. Then Dice-K gets the flu and gets scratched, and then another rookie makes the start today. Are you freaking kidding me?

Long term roster issue
I’m concerned that the roster is/will be DH/1B/OF heavy. Ellis and Crosby have both been prone to breakdowns. It would be nice to have another IF around to play a few innings here or there. Today would have been a great day to rest one of those guys in the later innings.
