It's "split squad" day in the Cactus league and that means lineups like the one Ken Korach just previewed on the broadcast: One where the most recognizable name in the Cubs' lineup is Ryan Theriot. Egads. "Don't let Ryan Theriot beat you!" No, doesn't trip off the tongue. Sounds like Rich Harden should be able to dominate, even if he only throws his fastball and splitter and does it with his left arm...He's matched up against Sean Marshall, while in the other game against Seattle, it's Justin Duchscherer against Jarrod Washburn.
The lineups for the A's-Cubs game:
Theriot – SS
Figueroa – 2B
Murton – RF
Ward – DH
Fox – 1B
Kroeger – CF
Cintron – 3B
Fuld – LF
Blanco – C
Buck – RF
Ellis – 2B
Cust – DH
Crosby – SS
Johnson – 1B
R. Sweeney – CF
Suzuki – C
Linden – LF
Hannahan – 3B

I began listening on 1550 AM
when suddenly the station started playing the preview for a Cal game...how rude!! I switched over to KFRC fm, but in doing so I missed Murton walking and the double by the next batter.
hey, where's is everyone?
OaklandSi - March 8, 2008
I am trying mlb audio, and they are playing
oldies
theblackpearl - March 8, 2008
I'm having the same trouble
... then they switched to broadcasting Cal Bears, then went back to KFRC oldies.
alleahna - March 8, 2008
F5 the mlb audio , it worked for me
theblackpearl - March 8, 2008
This is gonna be confusing
Both A's games are on mlb.com. And unfortunately, the Cubs game airing on WGN is NOT the one against the A's.
So we're all more interested in Harden's start than Duchscherer's?
thejd44 - March 8, 2008
3--0 cubs already somehow, my audio
just kicked in
theblackpearl - March 8, 2008
Harden gave up 4H, 3 doubles
3-0 cubs
Oaktownflav - March 8, 2008
No worries
Harden's decided to only throw beachballs today since it's only spring training.

anyone listening to Duke's game
on mlb.com audio? If so, we might need a split-squad AN thread as well...
OaklandSi - March 8, 2008
I've got that one on
But it's painful listening to the M's announcers.
thejd44 - March 8, 2008
Murphy triples and M. Sweeney scores...
Conrad singles and Murphy scores. 2-0 A's over M's in the 2nd.
FoolshGame22 - March 8, 2008
Harden walks leadoff hitter,
theblackpearl - March 8, 2008
AH!!
WGN had preseason baseball on... thought it was against the A's. Sadly, no.
This is the first game I've got to listen to this Spring. It's so awesome to hear KenKo say Rich Harden's name.
Jennifer - March 8, 2008
Blanco singles, first and second, no outs
Harden struggling
theblackpearl - March 8, 2008
Last inning Korach observed
that so far today and in his last start Harden seemed to be leaving all his offspeed stuff up in the zone. Wonder if that 0-2 pitch that just got hit was another one?
FreeSeatUpgrade - March 8, 2008
anyone else get nervious
when Harden had to field that bunt?
OaklandSi - March 8, 2008
Vince. :)
Jennifer - March 8, 2008
As he was fielding the bunt,
I kept hearing, in my head, "the throw to first is in time...and Harden is hurt." Luckily, a few of the other voices in my head told me not to worry about it.
Nico - March 8, 2008
sounds like you've got the split
squad all by yourself
OaklandSi - March 8, 2008
Yeah, it's kinda nice
Hang on, the toaster's trying to tell me something.

danmerqury - March 8, 2008
Donnie Murphy
doubles off Washburn. 2nd and 3rd (Bowen on third).
I'm bad at this PBP thing because I get distracted by email and stuff. I'm the Buan of AN PBP.

A's/ M's lineups
Does anyone have the lineups for the A's/M's game? I don't have MLB audio and I live in Humboldt where we don't have a A's radio feed.

for Harden
Oaktownflav - March 8, 2008
Harden done after 3
theblackpearl - March 8, 2008
And by "done" we mean
placed on the 180-day DL, listed as "day to day".
Nico - March 8, 2008
but still working in the pen.
Jennifer - March 8, 2008
Well, obviously.
Nico - March 8, 2008
Saarloos on to retire the 1st 2 batters
theblackpearl - March 8, 2008
Duke going..
for 4 innings?
Syphon - March 8, 2008
I wish that game were the one on radio
Better lineups, better game. Go Duke!
Nico - March 8, 2008
Crosby E6
Oaktownflav - March 8, 2008
He threw it low and away
And actually swung at it as the runner crossed first base safely.
Nico - March 8, 2008
Duchscherer
Looks like from the stat line that he is doing well against the main Seattle lineup. (it's just spring training... It's just spring training... I know:) )
crb29 - March 8, 2008
My personal opinion is that all those
who said Duke can't go through a lineup more than once are wrong. If healthy, I think Duke will be a worthy #3 starter.
Nico - March 8, 2008
didn't most of those say
he couldn't get through more than twice?
OaklandSi - March 8, 2008
I think there a lot of skeptics as to whether
Duke can go as many as 5 innings and maintain his effectiveness, and that's mostly the second time through the order. My opinion is that he's fine any number of times through the order if he's healthy - stamina-wise if he can go 7 innings (which he can do on less than 100 pitches), I think he can be as effective in the 6th-7th as in the 1st-2nd. We'll see...
Nico - March 8, 2008
I guess what I should say is
as effective in the 6th-7th as in the 1st-2nd when compared to most starters.
Nico - March 8, 2008
+1
crb29 - March 8, 2008
Seattle doesn't exactly have a strong lineup
Duke's gonna have to prove me wrong. I just don't see him being better than league average as a starter, which is alright, but I think he's much more useful in the bullpen.
Whatever boosts his trade value.
thejd44 - March 8, 2008
Saarloos gets 4 outs!
very nice!

STOP HITTING CUST
I swear he's been hit like 16 times this spring. Or maybe just twice, but that's too many.
thejd44 - March 8, 2008
Well, if the team...
...would grow a pair and rush the mound or bean one of their players instead of lining up like cows in a slaughterhouse, maybe it wouldn't happen so much.
In the Angels game two players were hit including Cust and there was NO retaliation from the A's.
Threepwood XX - March 8, 2008
WTF is going on?
Crosby?!?
Jennifer - March 8, 2008

Still 2-0 A's
WhiteElephants - March 8, 2008
LOB
A's have left 13 runners on in the M's game so far according to MLB boxscore. We're winning, but that always comes back to bite us in the Arse.
crb29 - March 8, 2008
The more you get on, the more you leave on
But they probably should have more than 2 runs at this point.
thejd44 - March 8, 2008
That's counting the same runners two and even three times...
As a team they have left 4 on.
You couldn't possibly leave 13 runners on in 4 innings.
WhiteElephants - March 8, 2008
You're right
I'm only reading everyones comments on AN and checking the slow to update stats on MLB. When I saw that stat compared to Seattle's 5 it seems like a lot.
crb29 - March 8, 2008
Yeah, what you're looking at counts how many people are on base each time a single out is made.
WhiteElephants - March 8, 2008
5-4-3 DP
Jennifer - March 8, 2008
I got tix yesterday to Rangers Vs Oakland

Conrad
I'm sure this has been asked and answered elsewhere --- but who the hell is this Conrad guy and where did the A's get him? He's had another good day in the game against Seattle.
richwol1 - March 8, 2008
Career minor leaguer with Houston
He's just an organizational filler guy. He'll play the role Lou Merloni did last year.
Even though he showed some power in AAA (as a very old player for the league), his minor league numbers are really not very impressive overall, especially for a guy who's almost 30.
thejd44 - March 8, 2008
Replace Conrad with Cust
and travel back in time one year. . .
williadc - March 8, 2008
Horrible comparison
because Cust was a highly touted prospect and a first round pick. Conrad was an 8th rounder who nobody had ever heard of. Cust had some major league experience, and even showed he could hit at the major league level in 2003.
Most importantly, Cust's career in the minors is ridiculous. He has 200 HR and a .286/.428/.518 line in the minors. Conrad does have a thousand fewer ML PAs, but he still has 86 fewer HR and his line is a modest .263/.344/.466. In addition to that, Conrad strikes out a ton but doesn't walk much. He also has only displayed power when he was old for his league. Cust hasn't played below AAA since he was 21. Conrad was in AA as recently as 2005, when he was 25.
Cust is a guy who is finally doing what everybody thought he'd do years ago. I really don't see the similarities other than both guys played a lot of minor league games.
