Well, it appears that I drew the short end of the stick I'm so excited about being chosen to wake up in the middle of the night to watch baseball and run a game thread about it!
I actually couldn't be much more excited. Normally. at this time, I live for that first Sunday night baseball game; where it could be the Royals vs. the Devil Rays and I'd STILL be excited about it; it gives me my baseball fix, even if it's not the A's opening day yet.
The year is different. Not only are the A's the first team to take the field, but it's a full week earlier than usual! Who cares about tiny details such as game times?
And by game times, I mean 3AM on Tuesday morning. Yes, the middle of the night. And I've been around this site long enough to know that it's not just me that is crazy about the A's, so something tells me I won't be game threading by myself.
I have two questions. Is there anyone reading AN right now who is in Japan? And will you be up for the first game of the season?

I might be.
I usually get up at 4:45 because I'm in the office at 6AM. So, this is a stretch for me, but not a Milton Bradley's hamstrings kind of stretch.
jeepers - March 21, 2008
I used to have to be in the office at 6 a.m.
But now I don't have to be anywhere all day, so I'll be watching both games!
Poppy - March 21, 2008
Wow!
No more hated job? Good for you! You didn't go all Milton from Office Space on them, did you?
jeepers - March 21, 2008
bwaha!
No, I left just barely before the pyromaniacal urges set in... ;)
Poppy - March 21, 2008
I plan to read the shortest-ever game threads
when I get to work around 7:45.
doctorK - March 21, 2008
I should be awake for both
I have a conference Tuesday and Wednesday, so I should be getting plenty of sleep before my big presentation, but no, I'll be up watching baseball. :)
gigglingone - March 21, 2008
I'll be up...
and on the Game Thread, but probably will be delirious and not coherent in any way, shape or form, so I'm actually really looking forward to it!
Taj Adib - March 21, 2008
Thank heavens for TiVo
I will watch the game when i get up!
bamaA'sfan - March 21, 2008
me too
prana160 - March 21, 2008
Bug!
CXZ doesn't work on IE if you vote in the poll.
Jennifer - March 21, 2008
And...
The game is on at 5 here. Much more manageable.
Jennifer - March 21, 2008
Lucky!
Although, not so lucky for the 8pm West Coast starts! :-)
baseballgirl - March 21, 2008
And now it works?
CXZ? WTF? OMG? BBQ? LOL? ST? POV? DLD?
Jennifer - March 21, 2008
OCD!
Poppy - March 21, 2008
BLT.
FormerHuntsvilleStar - March 21, 2008
I'll be up and watching.
mikev - March 21, 2008
practice
I'll be up tomorrow at 5am to watch the scrimage and hope to make it a double header and watch the second scrimage game at Mid-night. If you have MLB.TV both games will be on.
Satchmo22 - March 21, 2008
Any other time of year
I'd stay up for it, but March and April are my busiest time at work, and I typically don't watch any game until after April 15. I'm a late late person by nature, so staying up till dawn really isn't that much of a stretch.
I'll set the VCR to tape both games. Then I might watch after work, though even that is debatable. I probably won't even turn it on till about 10:30 or 11:00pm, in which case I'll probably fall asleep before it's over.
iglew - March 21, 2008
I'm in!
Excitement for baseball that counts + Beginning of spring break + Hops and barley = Staying up to watch the game.
Joey C. - March 21, 2008
mis-read that
Hoops and barley
Satchmo22 - March 21, 2008
Hoops and Barkley
That's one funny dude.
niallmack - March 21, 2008
With the miracle of Tivo
Can't we do both?
Joey C. - March 21, 2008
I'm planning on trying
to get up and watch on Tuesday, but I might not make it. It depends on how exhausted I am.
Tyler Bleszinski - March 21, 2008
I plan to be up for game 1 ...
game 2 ... we'll see ...
devo - March 21, 2008
getting up
I'm going to get up early, watch the game at 5am and go to my one class at 9:30...then take a nap maybe.
pbruins92 - March 21, 2008
Being in NY
games on at 6am so not that bad. Ill be watching both.
Syphon - March 21, 2008
I'll be here.
I think. I'm hoping for a bunch of pre-game nonsense so I can at least hit snooze a couple times.
HigherPie - March 21, 2008
Arak and I are trying to figure something out.
salb918 - March 21, 2008
Are you sharing a sliderule?
Poppy - March 21, 2008
euphemism alert
andeux - March 21, 2008
Don't tease me.
(Breakfast date? Hmm... baseball and scrambled eggs... Travis Buck and gravy...)
Jennifer - March 21, 2008
perhaps an unlawful brunch
perhaps something more akin to breaking and entering
ArakSOT - March 21, 2008
Ah, those were the words I was looking for.
salb918 - March 21, 2008
You forgot
DVR!
niallmack - March 21, 2008
Praise to all you diehards...
...who will provide play by play via the gameday thread, so when I get up at 5:30 for the eighth inning I can get caught up with what when on in the first seven
BleacherGuy - March 21, 2008
I will be watching live
I have yet to be on an A's game thread and 3AM won't keep me from my first. And with the boss on vacay next week, I can sneak in an hour later than ususal. like 6:30, rather than 5:30.
67MARQUEZ - March 21, 2008
Like Poppy, I'm unemployed
so 3 AM is as good as any other time for me.
Englishmajor - March 21, 2008
Doesn't it actually start at 4:05am?
That's what I keep seeing, including on the AN Schedule page.
Mark H - March 21, 2008
I saw the same thing!!
But the TV networks have it at 3AM, for sure. Maybe pre-game stuff?
baseballgirl - March 21, 2008
we seriously need some clarity on this
If I get up at 3 am and then have to watch a full hour of Karl Raveach and John Kruk yaking about nothing but the Red Sox there's gonna be a majorly pissed off batgirl.
batgirl - March 21, 2008
ESPN2 has it blocked out for 3-6 so it doesn't seem like it's a long pregame.
MLB.com says 6:05 am EST
devo - March 21, 2008
I'll be up
but I'm not sure I'll be able to focus much of my attention here since I'm planning on doing some sort of running diary for 411mania (if I can get the system to work how I want).
Except it's 5 AM for me, so I plan to go to sleep for a couple hours, get up for the game, then go back to sleep once it's over.
thejd44 - March 21, 2008
I have to wake my wife up at 3:30, so I will probably
stay up and watch, after that, so I should be joining the few, the proud, THE AN, in the game thread
theblackpearl - March 21, 2008
Opening day for sure
Maybe 2nd game too, I'll have to see. I have a latin test Tuesday morning, so I really should sleep... but... baseball seems like the better choice.
JLaff - March 21, 2008
Nobody speaks Latin anymore
Watch baseball instead.
thejd44 - March 21, 2008
Oh I know
But I had to take a language and I couldn't get Spanish 2 last year... so... I decided to choose Latin. It's hard as hell, but I think it's worth it.
JLaff - March 21, 2008
But, still, baseball wins. Right?
thejd44 - March 21, 2008
Naturally
For one night, at least.
JLaff - March 22, 2008
Are we having game threads for the exhibitions?
I'll volunteer to do the 3 AM Saturday one as a
diaryFanPost if no front-pager is available. They are supposedly on 1550 AM as well as MLB.tv.Englishmajor - March 21, 2008
I'm sure someone will open exhibition game threads, but they may be up late at night (well before the game). I'll check into it.
baseballgirl - March 21, 2008
I will put it on....
Not sure I will stay awake for the whole thing though....Depends on the score I would imagine.
OaktownPower - March 21, 2008
And then there is...
Getting together with good friends and watching the tivo'd version at a much more reasonable hour ( say early evening after work?).although I suspect I'll know all about what happened by then.
Besides "adult beverages" and snacks just aren't too appealing at 3 AM!
Go A's!
LongTimeFan - March 21, 2008
Hahaha!!
Not to mention, our neighbors would ALL love the 3am parties!!!!! :-)
baseballgirl - March 21, 2008
I beg to differ about the adult beverages. Pick up your favorite beer and I'm sure you would have a change of heart. I plan on waking up an hour and a half or so before gametime to put a few down before the first pitch. My roomate is from the east coast, so I have no beef with him being a Sox Fan. We have a bet going on: if either team sweeps the 2 game series, the other has to wear Sox/A's gear on campus one day. (We are students at Colorado State University). Should be a great time!
WhoNeedsReligionWhenYaGotBaseball - March 24, 2008
I'm in!
Next week will be my last of unemployment. Hopefully getting up at 4am for two days will help me adjust my sleep cycle and make getting up at 5:30 for the foreseeable future less painful.
SirDan - March 21, 2008
How can we watch the game?
I'm not in the bay area market, and it looks like ESPN is not covering it.
Is MLB.tv the only option?
What about Extra Innings? I believe Extra Innings is only regular season, though.
schmidty - March 21, 2008
It's on ESPN8 -- The Ocho
actually ESPN2 ... just felt like the reference needed making ...
devo - March 21, 2008
What about the exhibition game?
I was referring to the exhibition game with the Yomiuri Giants tomorrow morning.
schmidty - March 21, 2008
My bad ...
I think mlb.tv is the only option ...
devo - March 21, 2008
It's on radio too
Englishmajor - March 21, 2008
espn2 is covering both games
and I hope to be sleeping and let my dvr do the work.
Let'sGoA's - March 21, 2008
I heard ESPN2
will have the games live, if so, i am in.
Laoren - March 21, 2008
I want to watch them but I'll have to see how tired I am and such. It makes me laugh how everyone is talking about getting up early to watch because my first thought was just to stay up. Of course if it really is starting at 4 with an hour of
pregameRed Sox coverage I will probably fall asleep before it starts. But if I'm watching it I'll definitely be here!
drmmerchk - March 21, 2008
Yes...
staying up all night is much easier (for me, anyway) than trying to get up at really early. Two days, though? I don't know about that. It's only 5 in my area. It won't be too bad.
Thank goodness they started making giant cans of Red Bull.
Jennifer - March 21, 2008
I just tried a new energy drink
It's called "function ALTERNATIVE ENERGY". The gimmick is that it's all natural, so it doesn't taste toxic. Truth be told, it's no Snapple. Still not easy to swallow.
I'll take a Pomegranate Rockstar, thank you very much.
JediLeroy - March 21, 2008
espn2 is going to show them live
but theyre also suppose to replay them at 11 am pst. So i am going to sleep in then watch.
skalordes - March 21, 2008
I've got 10 dollars on the Red Sox getting twice as much intro coverage
When their lineups are announced, the commentators will spend a bunch of time on them, and then just show a chart of the A's fielders. When the A's come up to bat, they'll spend the majority of the time talking about the Red Sox fielders, flashing the A's lineup for a couple seconds.
JediLeroy - March 21, 2008
When the sched came out...
I was stoked to see the A's were on at 3am. Touching 6am isn't too rare for me, so I figured I'd catch them for sure. Then my buddy (that I'm playing with) booked a gig in Santa Cruz for the 26th. I don't know what that means for the first game, but I gotta make the drive back to LA the morning of the 27th, so the 2nd game is pretty much off-limits.
Here's to hoping I don't see the results until I can watch mlb.tv late Thursday night!
Scottbass - March 21, 2008
I'm going to be up later than I planned the night before, too
going to the Laker-Warrior game Monday night
67MARQUEZ - March 21, 2008
I'm going Sunday down here!!!!
baseballgirl - March 21, 2008
lucky!
I've been to two Laker home games in my life, 'bout five years ago.
67MARQUEZ - March 21, 2008
Oh, hell. How badly do I want to not be unemployed?
I've just been asked to schedule a job interview for Wednesday morning.
Poppy - March 21, 2008
What's the problem?
They're not going to ask you to interview at 7 am, right?
salb918 - March 21, 2008
Yeah
And think of it this way: if your being drunk at the job interview bothers them, then it's probably not somewhere you want to work anyway.
andeux - March 21, 2008
Drunk Me is way more coherent and personable than Sleep-Deprived Me.
Poppy - March 21, 2008
How can you have an interview on Wednesday?
Your future boss won't even be back in the country until Thursday.
Englishmajor - March 21, 2008
I'm on the East Coast
and 6 am is not that ridiculous -- I will have to get to work that morning, and get the kids motivated to get going as well, but I'm kinda planning to get up early to catch some of the games before the morning gets rolling.
Nick - March 21, 2008
For once being on the East Coast
is an advantage.
No way I'm missing them. I'll be tuned in at 6 with coffee and breakfast, and should be able to watch most of the games before leaving for work... Although the damn Red Sox do play some awfully slow games.
Faust - March 21, 2008
Living in Japan as an A's fan pays off for once
I will watch the A's play the Giants tonight and the Sox on Tuesday on TV, then attend the Wed. game vs. the Sox at the Tokyo Dome.
It will probably be my only chance to see the A's play this season since I don't have pay TV and regular TV only shows occasional Yankees, Mariners, Red Sox games (no prizes for guessing why those teams!) Once in a while through the luck of the draw the A's pop up on one of those games.
Mark A - March 21, 2008
you actually get to GO to the games????
Wow, you are my hero now. I hope you'll do a post-game pictures and stories thread. :)
gigglingone - March 21, 2008
I'm actually at work at 3 am....
with access to a satellite television set. So it's looking like my employer is going to foot the cost of my obsession for at least a couple of nights.
alox - March 21, 2008
Watching the first half of each game from home...
...and the second half from work. Good thing it only takes like eight minutes to get to work...
FormerHuntsvilleStar - March 21, 2008
I'll be watching both Japan games live...
if I can keep my eyes open.
IM4Oakgal - March 21, 2008
Just flew into to Tokyo last night
Ready for the game tonight. Going to all of em. Looks like the Tokyo Dome has some really short gaps. Papi and JD Drew went deep opposite field gaps in the first inning of their exhibition against the Hanshin Tigers.
jesseholm - March 21, 2008
you and MarkA MUST post photo diaries!!!

Watching from Vietnam
I am posted here in Vietnam for the next 7 months so I'll have no trouble being awake for the game. But I wonder where in the hell I'm going to be able to find it? My initial plan was to take a trip to japan and go to the game, but the tickets sold out so fast! Anyway, any ideas?
ErikFanClubPres - March 21, 2008

ESPN coverage of A's-Red Sox series

i ended up just buying mlb.tv, thanks though
ErikFanClubPres - March 22, 2008
torn
between re-upping for cable and watching or doing the tivo thing. And as of yet have not re-suscribed to mlb.tv since I tend to over do it over the course of the season.
ak_A - March 21, 2008
I'm psyched
Seeing as our home games usually start at 3:05am UK time, I'm excited about being able to watch a couple of games at a reasonable hour for once. Honestly the timing couldn't be better, and it feels like a small bonus for my years of staying up until 6am watching our illustrious team.
textonly - March 21, 2008
You deserve it!!! Enjoy!
baseballgirl - March 21, 2008
I'm in
Even though I have school that same morning... But luckily it's a late start day and doesn't start until 9:30, so that'll probably allow me to fit in an hour or so of sleep.
Kimberly - March 21, 2008
For once the games start at a perfect time here in Scandinavia.!
I'm excited to be able to catch the games on Europe's leading satellite channel for North American Sports, NASN.!
I'm in agreement with textonly in the UK. This is a small bonus for A's fans living far away from there home team. I love these early afternoon start times. GO A's !!
Mikko O - March 21, 2008
I'll be watching.
And I'll be here for the game thread.
I'll also be brewing some coffee.
