Well, we seem to have discovered another minor AN 3.0 bug: every time I try to enter the name of the Rockies shortstop in HTML mode, it keeps switching to TULOWYSIWYG mode. Not sure what's up with that.
OK, sorry about that one. Hey, it's spring training for us, too. I need to get my punning muscles limbered up.
Speaking of which, you folks aren't off the hook either. Today's drill: try to stretch the limits of the new AN 3.0 threading platform. I want to see lots of posts, replies, and tangential discussions in the game thread today. Remember, it's spring training: wins and losses in individual arguments don't matter—it's all about getting yourself ready to be in game shape, and we have less time than usual this spring.
Today we get our first look at Dana Eveland, the allegedly Blanton/Wells-esque lefty acquired from the D-Backs in the Haren deal. Josh Towers starts for the Rockies.

Pre-game trade rumors...
There's a quick note in John Perrott's Every Given Sunday column at BP (behind a subscriber wall) that says:
No other info or links.

The WSox don't have the prospects.

HigherPie - March 2, 2008
Three-way trade?
The Sox might not have the prospects, but since Ellis is a bit undervalued around baseball, could Beane get a veteran back that he could flip for more prospects then Ellis would bring in?
Threepwood XX - March 2, 2008
I'm really happy with the game threads so far. 2.0 used to freeze up on Firefox after ~200 comments, but 3.0 is smooth and fast. And CXCX lets me read through a whole game thread in less than 5 minutes. Now if people would just fanpost more often, I could waste a full day's work online again.

Is Crosby 4th some kind of sick Geren joke?
I know he won't hit there during the regular season, but he very well could be the worst offensive player in that lineup. Is it one of those "we want this turd to get more at bats" sort of things?

Welcome, fellow SAN LeANdrAN!
(assuming you are from your handle)
We have a new (in the last couple of weeks) software package so we're all still figuring it out. (I was going to say "groping around" but we pretty much do that all the time. We have a glossary of frequently used terms and memes but it is temporarily absent. Feel free to ask specific questions -- we will mock you for a while but eventually someone will answer.

I found the "C" "X" info, so that's working pretty good. But what's the "action" and "up"? All the comments started to get collapsed after I went off to the A's page. I reloaded this page and got everything back and saw your comment. Never saw it arrive....
SanLeandroA's - March 2, 2008
If you click "Actions"
you can then click either "Flag" or "Rec". Flag flaggs a that comment for admin attention or something. It's not really set up to work right now. Rec recommends a comment. On the front page, on the right, there's a listing of "recommended fanposts" that have been recommended by other users.

Alright, lets do this.
If you find a pic you like online, right click on it, and choose "Save Image As" (Firefox) or "Save Picture As" (Internet Explorer), and save the picture on your computer.
Then go to your profile. IM4Oakgal, yours is here. Charlie, here.
Click on "Edit Profile" at the top of the page.
Then click on "Browse" next to "Profile Image", find the picture you just saved, double-click on it. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "UPDATE".
You should be good to go.
If you want to search for some images online, Google Images is a good place to start.

My "crazy" (but not really) prediction for 2008:

Syphon - March 2, 2008
I think that
the Mariners have a good chance. They did well in the division last year for most of the season and their team is better with Bedard not worse. I don't think a lot of our AN analysts are seeing the team realistically.
IM4Oakgal - March 2, 2008

Syphon - March 2, 2008
we'll see

rebus - March 2, 2008
A team without a ton of talent
was very healthy and outperformed their pythagorean record by 9 games.
Bedard improves the team, but they gave up a LOT to get him. When you factor in the Bedard improvement (3-4 games? If that?), a likely regression to the mean, plus a normal amount of injuries they're no better than a .500 team. And it's completely reasonable that guys like Vidro and Sexson will get even worse and totally ruin an offense that isn't that good anyway. I don't think 75 wins is a ridiculous guess, though I expect more like 79-80.
thejd44 - March 2, 2008

We will see. Bedard is huge. I had him in fantasy last year and he's a strikeout machine.

IM4Oakgal - March 2, 2008
He just mentioned Joe Kennedy
I had a burst of sadness.
IM4Oakgal - March 2, 2008
That happens to me
every time he they say Bill King :-(
HigherPie - March 2, 2008
But Bill lived a full life.
Joe left a little child.
IM4Oakgal - March 2, 2008
Is De Los Santos..
in camp?
Syphon - March 2, 2008
NM ...
They just said he wasnt on the game broadcast.
Syphon - March 2, 2008
Do not recall his being given a mlb invite; should be
at the minor league camp in another day or so.
Charlie Brown - March 2, 2008
Yeah...
2 sec after i typed that they said he would be in minor camp soon.
Syphon - March 2, 2008
Believe that I read something about 3 March on that
Charlie Brown - March 2, 2008
Will operate for a month with 4 teams for different levels
Play 2 games at home and 2 on the road each day after a couple weeks of conditioning...
Charlie Brown - March 2, 2008
De la Santos may be our best new face in the minor league camp...
Charlie Brown - March 2, 2008
Rally time
runners at 1st and 2nd.
Knoedler up
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
Knoedler pops out
Going to the 9th
2-1 Rockies
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
Knoedler supposed to be still up and coming catcher
Looking forward to seeing if he can continue to improve with the bat and as a fielder. Only been a catcher for a short time. Giants prospect as I recall. Highly regarded and signed as a minor league 6 year free agent...
Charlie Brown - March 2, 2008
Why isn't Fosse going to Japan?
They've been talking about it, but I missed the reason if they explained it.
Englishmajor - March 2, 2008
games are probably on ESPN only
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
True.
But he could still go along for the radio side, you'd think. Maybe he doesn't want to have the long flight.
Englishmajor - March 2, 2008
yeah
Either that or the A's are too cheap
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
How about them kids!
SanLeandroA's - March 2, 2008
Nice
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
Yay, Conrad!
Triple!
Kimberly - March 2, 2008
THAT'S MY BRO-IN-LAW
Dex - March 2, 2008
looks like a keeper to me...
can we sign him to a minor league deal if he doesn't make the major league roster?
FoolshGame22 - March 2, 2008
Lets Go Oakland!
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
Brooksy
That's the cycle in 4 ABs. Can you guys tell I'm selling?
Dex - March 2, 2008
hey are you the same Dex from gaslamo ball?
Hilarious stuff over there.
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
Yes
But today I am an Athletic
Dex - March 2, 2008
Woo hoo! Tied up!
Englishmajor - March 2, 2008

I love spring.

This is a must-win ballgame.

gotgreen - March 2, 2008
tie game
who the hell is this brooks conrad guy and where did he come from?
xbhaskarx - March 2, 2008
he's Dex's bro-in-law...
ASU guy, stuck behind Biggio and Burke in the Astros system, as I recall. Right, Dex?
FoolshGame22 - March 2, 2008
21, 24, and 22 hr the last three years in AAA
anyone know how he is defensively at 2b?
xbhaskarx - March 2, 2008
the scouting report
Undersized overachiever. For years, he's been stuck with a "no tools, all skills" label. Jackie Moore really liked him at Round Rock and did his best to try to get him to the show, playing him at all the infield positions, but no luck.
Dex - March 2, 2008
A's signed him believe it or not to be a backup to
a AAA infielder (Melillo, I believe I recall), he hit .218 last season with over 140 K's. With the scouting report one would think he had no talent at all... similar to pitcher A's sent out earlier who went 1-9 in Japan.
Charlie Brown - March 2, 2008
the scouting report explained
I don't believe in the scouting report. The year before the .218 season, he led the minor leagues in extra base hits. Most triples in PCL. Outperformed Burke and Biggio and didn't get a look at a major league spot even after the rosters opened up at the end of the season.
I'm rooting for him to make the club and stick it to the Astros. :) Go Brooks!
Dex - March 2, 2008
Will keep an eye open
when he plays. I hope he succeeds.
IM4Oakgal - March 2, 2008
How did the A's get him?
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
Dex said he was an invitee...
in yesterday's game thread.
FoolshGame22 - March 2, 2008
He was a Minor League Free Agent
And based on his minor league numbers he looks like organizational filler and not much more. A 27 year old hitting 218/305/420 in AAA isn't exactly amazing.
thejd44 - March 2, 2008
Essentially what I posted at the same time that you did... organizational filler.... LOL
Still pumping out the postings....
Charlie Brown - March 2, 2008
I won't make excuses for him
Though I don't think the Astros were going to ever give him a shot. In recent years they've been much more concerned with Biggio's final career stats than ever actually getting a second baseman who could play.
Dex - March 2, 2008
I think the Astros organization is pretty poor
but I'm not sure Conrad is a real major league talent. At least nobody special. I'm sure he could find a spot on a bench somewhere.
thejd44 - March 2, 2008
a's win!!
xbhaskarx - March 2, 2008
BOOOOM!!!!
A's Win!!!!!!!!!
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
Podsednik!
In honor of whom (although he didn't get hit in the head this time):

Englishmajor - March 2, 2008
the best part of that pic
is his elf hat
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
and he looks like he's achieved enlightenment.
rebus - March 2, 2008
It's because the folks at SouthSideSox
had dubbed Pods "Peter Pan" last season, apparently because of his boyish enthusiasm and his delusion that he could fly, he could fly, he could fly.
Englishmajor - March 2, 2008
I'll refrain from posting the ani-gif
of the ball hits Podsednik in the head last year - only because there were too many complaints about an 'eyeworm' the last time I did it.
doctorK - March 2, 2008
I like how KenKo called that like it mattered.
rebus - March 2, 2008
Good pitching today
Eveland a little shaky, but solid pitching from the A's today.
Nice to see Simmons, Rodriguez, and Blevins on the scene.
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
Also notable
Carlos Gonzalez throwing out Atkins at the plate. His "++ arm" (as DeFranceco describes it) as advertised.
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
Does anyone know...
...when the Cactus League World Series starts? I want to get tickets now!
I am really liking what I am seeing...timely hitting, good fielding and aggressive on the basepaths. Not to mention some lively arms. I don't know why everyone is down (in the press) on this team. I think from the looks of things we are going to better than mediocre. Fun at least. GO A'S
since72 - March 2, 2008
We having been stating since the trades began that this team
was going to be enjoyable to watch this year. Even if this is just spring training, the talent is showing itself by rising to the top. Great time to watch an interested ball club.
Charlie Brown - March 2, 2008
such grammar LOL
Charlie Brown - March 2, 2008
What gives?
MLB radio no longer lets you listen to Extra Innings?
That sucks.
pickinmachine - March 2, 2008
when I had mlb.com audio in 2005
they would often cut off before extra innings...so this isn't a new thing
OaklandSi - March 2, 2008
ugh
1) this thread takes FOREVER to load
2) i have to hit page down like 50 times
3) i finally get to the bottom as it finishes loading, and for some reason it takes me right back to the top!
xbhaskarx - March 2, 2008
interesting
1) it takes about 7 seconds to load for me on average. how long is it taking for you?
2) do you click page down instead of scrolling? do you have to click it so many times because the page is long? or does your browser not recognize your page down keypress because it's loading?
3) if you clicked the "# comments" link at the bottom of the story from the home page, we anchor that to the top of the comments section so that you pass the content of the story and get right into the comments. when the page stops loading it might be trying to pop back up to that anchor.
I'm sure I've asked you this before and I really should put it on file for you regulars, but what browser/operating system are you using? and what kind of internet connection do you have?
Also, do you see any of the page load? If so, can you tell if there are certain things that are taking a long time to load?
We've been tuning the performance of the page, so I'm really curious what would be causing a slow load time for you.
If anyone else is running into a significantly slow load time, please let us know with as much detail as possible.
Trei Brundrett - March 2, 2008
Sorry to hear it X.
It loads quickly for me, as do all of the threads. It seems to me that most of the people reporting trouble use macs.
IM4Oakgal - March 2, 2008
Not me
it loads quickly for me, I don't have any major bugs, and I'm on a Mac using the latest Leopard and Safari.
