UPDATE, 1:25 PDT - John Lackey left his start today with a strained right triceps and will miss at least a month of the season. Combined with Kelvim Escobar's injury problems, this could be huge.
It's Split Sad Squatterday!!! Through a miracle known in Science (and Trout Magazine) as fission, the A's - despite beginning the day as one single organism - are managing to host the Giants while they visit the Padres. It's truly incredulous, to the point where I am rendered incredible.
The starting lineups currently look like this:
Bucknorfia - CF
Ellilo - 2B
Cussweeny - DH
Chavannahan - 3B
Swe--
You know, maybe I'll wait for the real ones. Stay tuned.
OK, here we go...In the A's-Giants game, Henry Rodriguez takes the mound for his first starting effort, with this lineup behind him:
Ellis – 2B
Barton – 1B
Crosby – SS
Cust – DH
Murphy – 3B
Suzuki – C
R. Sweeney – CF
Linden – RF
Fiorentino – LF
In the A's-Padres game, Lenny DiNardo takes the mound with this lineup behind him:
Denorfia – CF
Buck – RF
M. Sweeney – DH
E. Brown – LF
Johnson – 1B
Bowen – C
Hannahan – 3B
Conrad – 2B
Petit – SS

OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Wow - Zito this spring:
7.1 IP, 14 hits, 0 Ks
Nico - March 15, 2008
last night I heard a commenter on KNBR
suggest that the Giants' stipulation in the contract that Zito stop surfing will hurt his ability to condition and keep his shoulders strong during the offseason...of course, that doesn't explain last season's performance...
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Barton walks
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008

speedchaser9 - March 15, 2008
Folks - the A's are in the race
Nico - March 15, 2008
I agree
I've been feeling pretty good about this team all Spring Training, but if the Angels start to have injury troubles like we did last season, it'll really give me some hope.
sprtsnwyn - March 15, 2008
Crosby k's on a, wait for it, pitch down and
away
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
shocking
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
The A's better sign Mike Sweeney
Coffee13eans - March 15, 2008
Cust walks bases loaded 1 out
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
It's a no-brainer at this point
sprtsnwyn - March 15, 2008
That was supposed to be
in regards to Sweeney.
sprtsnwyn - March 15, 2008
I was thinking, you don't know me that well to call me a no brainer, do you
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
I don't believe so
sprtsnwyn - March 15, 2008
:) You know I was joking right
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Giants lose Murphy popup
A's lead 2-0
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Murphy singles on a ball someone should have

2-1 A's
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
oops, forgot the Giant's run
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Just don't let it happen again :)
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008

thejd44 - March 15, 2008
Linden continues to sizzle
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
First hit since last Saturday
HigherPie - March 15, 2008
That is actually his 1st hit since he spouted off last week
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
really? has he been playing much?
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Giants are getting their ass kicked
Linden ropes a double 6-1 A's
pickinmachine - March 15, 2008
I wish we could play the giants like 30 times this year
TheGreenGoldCrush - March 15, 2008
we play the Giants 6 times on the regular schedule if that's any consolation
Coffee13eans - March 15, 2008
Linden singles Sweeney scores
6-1
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Todd Linden hitting the ball again
And the Giants... are really, really bad. I mean, bad. This pitcher for them today must really be Misching his spots or something.
thejd44 - March 15, 2008
Fiorentino is the 9th batter of the inning
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
who's the new Giants pitcher?
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Fiorentino walks, new pitcher on the way in
a righty
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Brosius?
(any relation to Scott?)
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
broshuis
weird
pickinmachine - March 15, 2008
BrosHius
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Lenny Dinardo....
gets out of the 2nd inning, giving up a single, score is still 2 - 0.
Coffee13eans - March 15, 2008
Everywhere I turn I hear
people saying the Mariners are good. I just dont see it.
Syphon - March 15, 2008
Everywhere you turn, people are saying
the A's aren't good, too. Pre-season picks are all about going with the obvious - picking who did well last year, or who has high profile names.
Nico - March 15, 2008
+1
thejd44 - March 15, 2008
If we are close in June/July
and bring up CarGon and Gio.. and maybe make a trade for whatever we need, we be in great position.
Syphon - March 15, 2008
Ellis singles bases loaded
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
.1 inning for Mische and 6 ER against. ouch.
TheGreenGoldCrush - March 15, 2008
make that 8er's
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Barton flies out on a good catch by Schierholtz
no runners advanced
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
8-1 A's on Crosby hit
here comes Cust
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Crosby singles 2 more in
8-1 A's
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Even the Giants minor leagues must suck
Because this Broshuis guy went 3-17 with a 3.88 ERA last season. That's some ridiculously awful run support.
thejd44 - March 15, 2008
yay crosby. Lets go cust
TheGreenGoldCrush - March 15, 2008
let's see how Henry does
after that long bottom half of the first
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Cust grunds out to 2nd inning over
8-1 A's after 1
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
DiNardo is having a tremendous spring
Why aren't people giving him more of a chance in the 5th starter derby?
thejd44 - March 15, 2008
Cause he's not 16 years old
Like the other guys.
I agree with you, though. We could do a lot worse than Lenny. If nothing else, he might be nice trade bait in June.
HigherPie - March 15, 2008
he might end up as the sixth starter/long reliever
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
I think he should be the 5th starter
TheGreenGoldCrush - March 15, 2008
I like DiNardo
TheGreenGoldCrush - March 15, 2008
the guys over at KNBR
have been saying that the minor league position players at AAA and the so-called younger guys in the Giants' camp are organization soldiers and AAAA types mostly, no real prospects in the positions at the upper levels. That's part of why you hear so much gallows humor on most of the programs. They know it's going to be a looonnggg season at the phone booth
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Wow these SD
announcers suck.
Syphon - March 15, 2008
How is the SD game going?
Coffee13eans - March 15, 2008
A's up 3-0 ATM
Syphon - March 15, 2008
Thanks Syphon
Coffee13eans - March 15, 2008
i wish they would follow the game more
i know it's spring training, but they're making it hard for me to listen. too much of a performance.
rebus - March 15, 2008
Yeah, we need pinpoint PBP
like during the Buancasts.
thejd44 - March 15, 2008
Rodriguez batting against Rodriguez

theblackpearl - March 15, 2008

theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
H-Rod better this inning
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
I'm chalking up the first inning
to first-start jitters. He threw lots of strikes in the 2nd.
HigherPie - March 15, 2008
yeah, that's what it sounded like
now Mische, on the other hand...
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Velez flies out, Rodriguez settled down
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
6-0 A's

I'm on mlb audio, so that is why
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
nice BP game vs the Giants
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
and vs the padres
joeldavid - March 15, 2008
Everyone seems to be making their cases to make the team
Coffee13eans - March 15, 2008
depends on who was the opposing pitcher
at least in part...also I doubt that an older player like Conrad will make the club. He's probably ticketed for Sacramento (unless, heaven forbid, there are infielder injuries on the big club)
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
In Conrad's case
that infielder would have to be Mark Ellis, because Conrad can't really play anywhere else but second base.
thejd44 - March 15, 2008
Good times
sprtsnwyn - March 15, 2008
Sweeney doubles Zook scores
9-1 A's

7-0 A's over Padres
going into bottom of the 3rd.
Syphon - March 15, 2008
your info is ahead of Vince Cotroneo
he just announced that the other game's score was 3-0
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Well if hes
using gameday or carrier pigeon yes hes behind.
Syphon - March 15, 2008
well if they only have mlb scoreboard, that is what is says
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Ellis flies out, in his 3RD AB OF THE GAME
and we are in the 2nd inning
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Barton flies out 10-1 end of 2
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Its prob safe to..
chalk up 2 more A's wins.
Syphon - March 15, 2008
Andrew Brown is in to pitch
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Wow these SanDiego guys..
are almost as bad as White Sox guys.
Syphon - March 15, 2008
Its probably Jerry Coleman
hes incredibly popular down here in San Diego.
pickinmachine - March 15, 2008
He shows..
no emotion for A's plays and way to much for the Padres.
Syphon - March 15, 2008
Lewis lines out to Fiorentin, who makes a good

theblackpearl - March 15, 2008

theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Murphy single
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008

to end the inning
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Zook forces Murphy at 2nd
end of 3 10-1 A's
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
that's what I get

OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Ishikawa k's
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Rodriguez walks
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Brown K's the batter, 2 away
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
poor throw by Murphy, doesn't get runner
brining up the Giants' speedster prospect Eugenio Velez
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Ha Ha Ha
Ha
We have havetwo lineups that are better than the Giants one! I love It!
Buck Turgidson - March 15, 2008
Break up the A's -- and the Rivercats!
The Dogfather - March 15, 2008
Giants are also playing two split squad games today
with most of the 25-man potentials in the other game.
But you're right -- even on KNBR they're predicting a dismal season for the Giants
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
uh oh, bases loaded for Lewis
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
AN Making its mark

oakinboston - March 15, 2008
tomorrow's game: A's vs Rangers
starters: Gio Gonzalez vs. Sidney Ponson
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Sidney Ponson -
Yeah, the Rangers figure to contend this year.
Nico - March 15, 2008
Saarloos pitching against the Giants now
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
very economical 6-pitch inning
he's probably battling DiNardo for the swingman spot (sixth starter/long reliever). DiNardo is on the 40 man roster while Saarloos signed a minor league contract, so I'm guessing DiNardo has the edge.
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
So are you guys following both games in this thread?
which one do you have on audio? I'm here til my son finds a good stopping point in his video game so we can go buy a birthday present (and I have 2 hours in the house to myself!)
kapers - March 15, 2008
both are on mlb.com audio
but the game against the Giants is on the A's radio network (in the Bay Area, 1550 AM/KFRC FM)
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Sweeney botched a fly ball runner on

theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
routine grounder, inning over
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Denorfia went 3-4 today,
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Great for Denorfia
Nice to see his stats improve as the end of spring training comes toward its end...
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
Linden another basehit
4-4 today
pickinmachine - March 15, 2008
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
Zito gave up another 4 1st inning runs
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Oh, he's just getting it out of his system.
Plus, he's due.
Nick - March 15, 2008
Do you think Linden is going to make the roster out
of spring training???
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
Wth Gonzalez out, why not?
Oaktownflav - March 15, 2008
only if they cut Emil Brown, or send Denorifa down. Too many Outfielders
theblackpearl - March 15, 2008
Going to take a number of 40 man roster additions...
Means players being designated for assignment or else going on 60 day d.l.
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
over/under on Chavez and Calero
ending up on the 60 day DL?
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Yes, quite likely on Calero...
Chavez I had not considered for 60 day... Guess a good possibility that he will go on 15 day d.l.
OTOH, Oakland will probably just wait a week or so and then think about putting him on the 15 day d.l. You know___ the Oakland way of using the d.l.
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
right, I'm expecting the 15 day DL for him
but wouldn't be surprised at the 60 day DL, when you consider how many surgeries he had, and the fact that he hasn't been able even to field grounders or run in spring training.
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Now is the time to d.l. him for 60 days then so he will be back around 15 May.
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
that would make sense
thought it hasn't been the A's way of doing things.
Let's see if they do it prior to leaving on the 19th (after the game that day)
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Don't think it works like that
I'd guess the first day you can put him on the DL would be the first day of the season, but with them being allowed to bring 30 guys to Japan (and 28 active by the time the games start) they might not even be able to DL him until the official opening day.
thejd44 - March 15, 2008
last year Kotsay was placed on the 60 day DL
on March 23. That was at least a week before the season started.
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Which of the 3 is a better Center Fielder?
I say Linden. Thoughts?
A'sfansince1970 - March 15, 2008
Not sure. Let the Manager choose one...
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
obviously, we have no input
I've never seen Denorfia play, have no idea what he looks like in center field
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
25 man roster likely will carry
four outfielders (plus Cust). Buck is assured of a spot, Brown likely is as well (he signed a guaranteed major league contract). So you have Denorfia, R. Sweeney and Linden competing for the final two spots (I doubt Fiorentino will make it).
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Concur on no Fiorentino... but he can play at Sacto
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
dont forget cargon
yes he hurt his hammy but he does have an outside chance to make it
since72 - March 15, 2008
I would guess no
I think it was an outside chance before he got hurt. With more options available, I think the A's would prefer to have him play at least a couple of months in Sacramento
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
wow, Zito gave up a grand slam to jojima...
ouch
Oaktownflav - March 15, 2008
Zito hasnt thrown a pitch
faster than 84mph since ive been watching.
Syphon - March 15, 2008
Cust is gonna get a hold of one here...
Oaktownflav - March 15, 2008
Awww, only 4-5 for Linden...
gonna have to do better than that!

Conrad Mashes
I would imagine the ump gave a big strikezone late in a 10-2 blowout...I'll bet Linden was pissed if that's the case...
...check out Conrad...i don't know much about him defensively, but he's maching the ball...5 rbi today with his 6th double and second HR...offense wiins ball games....I'd like to see him get a chance while Chavez is out, but he's another non-Roster guy for whom there probably isn;t room
BleacherGuy - March 15, 2008
Yep, that is true that there is probably no room for him
on the big league roster. But can never tell what will develop if he is needed...
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
Zito still has no K's this spring...
maybe he should start surfing again.
Oaktownflav - March 15, 2008
His K/BB rate is..
INF
Syphon - March 15, 2008
Every pitcher the A's
had going today had atleast 1 K. Except Shipman who pitch 1/3 of an inning.
Syphon - March 15, 2008
Glad the A's didn't waste money on him!
A'sfansince1970 - March 15, 2008
Game over with a K
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Go A's x 2
TheGreenGoldCrush - March 15, 2008
he other game is over, A's win 9-3
the mlb.com audio for that game is almost inaudible, for some reason
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Well Bedard gave up 6
spring training stats are more than a little silly
Buck Turgidson - March 15, 2008
true, but the concern with Zito is a possible trend
of decline, both with fastball speed (from 89 to 84 is significant if he needs it to set up his other pitches), and the fact that umps are rarely calling his curveball a strike now.
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
yeah, I'm glad it's not my concern
Buck Turgidson - March 15, 2008
yeah, and even though spring training stats mean nothing
the Giants have to be concerned about Zito's performance
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
I think they have a lot more to worry about than is Zito gonna perform like a #3
Like hey, our entire infield is below replacement level. And our Center fielder is our best hitter, but we'll see how he looks after chasing flyballs and line drives all over our cavernous outfield for 162 games.
Buck Turgidson - March 15, 2008
agreed
and Zito's performance is made more critical when you think of how much they are paying him...and for how long...even with deep pockets that has to limit their ability to sign better players
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
Zito's line today: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 0 K, 2 HR
salb918 - March 15, 2008
so, zito this spring
7.1 ip, 14h, 17r, 2hr, 6bb, 0k before today
5.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 2 HR, 4 BB, 0 K
12.2 ip, 21h, 24r, 4hr, 10bb, 0k
xbhaskarx - March 15, 2008
He must have decided to pitch to contact
mikeA - March 15, 2008
As opposed to "pitch to contract"
salb918 - March 15, 2008
Brooks Conrad had 5 RBI!
He should take over nicely for Mark Ellis if he keeps that up.
Oaktownflav - March 15, 2008
He's a 28-year-old career minor leaguer
with minor league numbers that aren't great by any means. I wish people would stop looking at a handful of ST at bats for the guy and look at his entire pro career before thinking Brooks frekaing Conrad is some kind of answer to a question other than "Who can get some at bats in Sacramento this year?"
If something happens to Ellis, Murphy (a younger, and significantly superior player) should, and likely would, get the first crack at the job. Unless of course he's playing short, then I give it to Hannahan. Then I give it to Melillo or Petit. I'm not sure when I'd let Conrad get a shot, but it wouldn't be until a lot of others completely failed.
thejd44 - March 15, 2008
Sounds like what you would have said about Jack Cust last spring, huh???
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
Yes, if you completely ignored Cust's MiL numbers
salb918 - March 15, 2008
I know how horrible that Conrads were last season.
Just saying there is a time to wake up and take a closer look... at the numbers being posted.
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
I don't get what Conrad's doing there then
By your account, there's literally no use for him at the big league club. What do you think the front office is thinking by letting Brooks start all these games?
Dex - March 15, 2008
He's a better than average
4th middle IF. He'll make the team in the Scutaro role if Crosby or Ellis get hurt. Donnie Murphy is starting a lot of games too...
mikeA - March 15, 2008
I replied to this a while back
however AN 3.0 has been really jumpy for me today. It's been a challenge sometimes to post. I in fact saw my response, but now it doesn't appear.
Anybody else having problems today?
(My post suggested that Conrad had a chance this year only if Ellis was hurt or traded; my understanding is that he only plays second base, unlike Hannahan, Murphy, Melillo and Petit.)
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
my head is going to pop
it just gets better and better. Our era is low batting average high this team looks tough. how in the heck are they going to be able to cut linden now?
since72 - March 15, 2008
Cut whoever is necessary... another team would want him so he will ask for his release.
Charlie Brown - March 15, 2008
how many of Linden's hits
were against pitchers on the opposing teams' 25-man club? He didn't start that many games, and many of those hits were against non-roster pitchers, so that may temper the A's interest in him.
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
mike sweeney
on extra innings with buan!
gotgreen - March 15, 2008
Very rough number, but per ESPN's standings, A's have
given up fewest runs in the Majors this Spring. And have scored the third most.
Just another nice factoid for the unquenchably optimistic.
(me, fer instance).
The Dogfather - March 15, 2008
it is spring training, after all
Giants leading Mariners 14-8, top of the ninth
OaklandSi - March 15, 2008
no Japan trip for Chavvy
this is hardly a surprise -- Slusser is reporting that the A's have officially decided against it. He'll stay and work out, hopefully play some games, with the minor leaguers. Also, Carlos Gonzalez won't be going. However, he may join the club for the Bay Bridge series to close out spring training.
