The A's and Giants go at it today with the A's sending Greg Smith, who came over as a part of the Haren bounty, to the mound to face former Athletic and really overpaid Giant Barry Zito.
Yeah, yeah, I know it's spring training, but I do want the A's to beat the crap out of Zito whenever possible.
This also happens to be the first game on the radio airwaves in the Bay Area. The A's have played two games so far this spring. Both against the Brewers, blowing the Brewers out one game and getting blown out in the first game as tends to happen in Arizona.
And apparently Eric Chavez's status for the opener is in doubt. I would seriously consider leaving Chavez home any way. Who needs a guy who had three surgeries this past offseason and already needs an epidural sitting on a plane for 12 hours?
LET'S GO A'S!!!!

Cotroneo: "Not one member of today's
starting lincup was on the Opening Day roster in 2007" - wow. From memory:
Suzuki
Barton
Mike Sweeney
Cust
Emil Brown
C. Gonzalez
Hannahan
Murphy
Petit
Not that bad really, considering Vince's point!
Nico - March 1, 2008
KenKo:
"A's in the grey tops...Giants in the unreadable black tops".

no kidding...those are awful, along with the angels' all-red ones.

murphy, hannahan, then gonzalez
xbhaskarx - March 1, 2008
I am so glad the A's didn't resign Zito.
The A's sent him as an Trojan Horse to destroy the Gaints from within.
micdog2001 - March 1, 2008
Not like they needed a whole lot of help with that one
Englishmajor - March 1, 2008
true but he is not helping

micdog2001 - March 1, 2008
"And action begins in the SF bullpen..."
Englishmajor - March 1, 2008
Hey folks!!
Just downloaded the new mlb.com media player, and tuned in just in time to hear C-Gon's RBI single.
Nick - March 1, 2008
good times, good times
micdog2001 - March 1, 2008
I'm pretty suspicious of MLB.com's media player updates
Their customer support sucks, and last year's update made it impossible to see any video on my Mac until I looked around on the web for help and found out that the plug-in I downloaded screws up one of the Mac's preference settings.
Nick - March 1, 2008
Hi guys!!!! Geez...I missed 15 min of the game, and I missed EVERYTHINNG!
baseballgirl - March 1, 2008
Yeah..
Same here. :(

xbhaskarx - March 1, 2008
nope, 6
xbhaskarx - March 1, 2008
zito gone
7h, 6r, 2/3 ip
xbhaskarx - March 1, 2008
Zito is throwing all his pitches
so he can't say he's working on his fastball command. What's up with him? only 2/3rd of an inining.
micdog2001 - March 1, 2008
And all of them evidently suck
Nick - March 1, 2008
Zito is always terrible in spring
But he was also terrible last season too for a good portion of the year.
Tyler Bleszinski - March 1, 2008
"What's up with him?"
it's barry zito, why are you surprised?
xbhaskarx - March 1, 2008
Barry Zito does not belong in MLB
The guy is terrible.
Worst signing in history for Giants (LOL)
I don't hate the guy, I just know pathetic(ness) when I see it and I saw it coming 4 years ago.
When you have a fastball that tops out at 20 mph, you are in deep do do
TimTimTimbo - March 1, 2008
Poor Barton
He has both outs this inning
lerei - March 1, 2008
8-0
lerei - March 1, 2008
Is there a mercy rule today?
Nick - March 1, 2008
SERIOUSLY!
baseballgirl - March 1, 2008
Women who've given birth disagree
From the Slusser article on Chavez:
"Dr. Mark Rubin gave Chavez the epidural late Friday morning at the Arizona Center for Pain Relief in Phoenix. The epidural, which is essentially a cortisone shot, is used to reduce inflammation, not to mask pain."
FreeSeatUpgrade - March 1, 2008
But doesn't "edipural" just refer to the placement of the catheter in the epidural space?
I mean, they could use the needle to put anaesthetics in your back, or to put cortisone there.
Nick - March 1, 2008
Or, uhh, "epidural"
"edipural" probably refers to killing sphynxes and marrying your mother, or something.
Nick - March 1, 2008
Or steroids, or HGH. Or beer!
FreeSeatUpgrade - March 1, 2008
This is correct

Zito's ERA
108.00
but then again, you know what they say about era.
Mark H - March 1, 2008
it's not the size that matters
it's the motion of the ocean...so to speak
OaklandSi - March 1, 2008
Why is this..
the only game on the mlb site to not have live updates? Annoying.
Syphon - March 1, 2008
greg smith
it's tough to evaluate a young pitcher when he's facing the giants...
xbhaskarx - March 1, 2008
Still.....
It was a good inning pitched. Two strikeouts I believe and only a 10 pitch count.
Coffee13eans - March 1, 2008
it was a joke (but also the truth)
xbhaskarx - March 1, 2008
Yeah -- Randy Wynn is batting 3rd? Blech
Nick - March 1, 2008
yeah it would be nice if he were facing a challenging team, like KC or something

flipgatey3 - March 1, 2008
Look who's wearing green and gold again...
Is Barry a vegetarian?
Nick - March 1, 2008
Maybe she's trolling for Prince Fielder this year
FreeSeatUpgrade - March 1, 2008
I think the Prince Fielder trolling outfit looks more like this...
Nick - March 1, 2008
that is disgusting
and the meat looks gross too.
micdog2001 - March 1, 2008
Prince went vegetarian this offseason
after reading the book "Skinny Bitch." I'm not kidding.
FreeSeatUpgrade - March 1, 2008
Well good for him, but that book sounds really hateful from what I've read of/about it
Nick - March 1, 2008
Not hateful.
But over the top, for sure. It's the Michael Moore-ish veg book. Sure, more tempered, academic, and/or thoughtful books are available on the subject, but Michael Moore-ish is what sells, and what gets headlines. The Skinny Bitches, regardless of their "rightness", were willing to capitalize on that.
I'm a vegan, for what it's worth.
HigherPie - March 1, 2008
The problem with what I've read
is that it basically seems to be saying to women, "You should hate your own body and hate yourself if you're not a size 2!! So become a vegan!!"
Nick - March 1, 2008
Yeah, that sucks. And is harmful.
Totally agree there.
Prince went veg due to the animal welfare arguments presented in the book, which is more what I was referring to.
HigherPie - March 1, 2008
great album
monkeyball - March 1, 2008
Yup, and an excellent band
In looking for the image online I read that the Undertones didn't have anything to do with the cover, which is plausible since it's a greatest hits collection. Though that story doesn't come from their own website.
You know what album I need to get? "Cast of Thousands" by the Adverts. It's one of those famously reviled punk albums -- mainly based on alleged complaints about its being overproduced -- and I always tended to accept that evaluation based on my experience with Penetrationwhose album "Moving Targets" really is overproduced mush, WAY worse than their live or demo stuff. But I've found a few cuts online from "Cast" and it actually sounds great.
Nick - March 1, 2008
I never got into the punkier UK stuff
I've probably only ever heard 1 or 2 songs by the Adverts.
But, man, I looooooooooved the Undertones -- and TPE was pretty damn great, at least around the time of Babble. That band (along with the original incarnation of Shriekback) is one of my Great Missed Opportunities, never having caught them live.
monkeyball - March 2, 2008

C-Gon: 2 for 2 with two line drives
Hannahan: 2 for 2 with two line drives - the guy is a line drive machine!
Suzuki: 3 for 3 with unkendallike solid contact
While no one's looking, the A's take the West in '08!!!
Nico - March 1, 2008
Don't you love March 1st optimism? :-)
Nico - March 1, 2008
I never had doubts bout...
the young hitters. Pitching however could be suspect.
Syphon - March 1, 2008
And this is going to be the LONGEST GAME EVER!
baseballgirl - March 1, 2008
Hey maybe we got a chance at the WS this year...
Oh wait thats right this is the giants we are playing
Mantecan As Fan - March 1, 2008
Pretty embarrassing to be 0-3 in the second, Barton.

Mantecan As Fan - March 1, 2008
haha
fosse and korach totally making fun of zito. can someone transcribe that?
xbhaskarx - March 1, 2008
I didn't copy it down, but that was pretty surprising!
Ken did a version of the "I wasn't aggressive enough in the zone, all credit goes to the hitters they were patient and hit the ball hard."
Nick - March 1, 2008
I got a fuzzy radio connection
Giants got one single and the bottom of the 2nd ends.
Coffee13eans - March 1, 2008
Korach mocks Zito, AN style!
Imagining Barry's postgame comments:
"Well, I was giving the hitters too much credit, trying to be too fine, I need to throw strikes and let my stuff get guys out."
or words to that effect.
FreeSeatUpgrade - March 1, 2008
Korach's mocking of Zito
"sound bites" (according to Vince)
Trying to be too fine, need to be more aggressive, ...
guess they've heard this enough
OaklandSi - March 1, 2008
Of course, I wouldn't really want to throw strikes
if they were pounded like Zito's were today.
Nico - March 1, 2008
Ken is on a roll
"We have no idea who is pitching for the Giants this inning...oh yes we do, it's Justin Case..."
Englishmajor - March 1, 2008
what was funnier
is the Giants announcers had no idea who was pitching for them
OaklandSi - March 1, 2008
Reminds me of
an ST game back around the early 90s. The A's were up by (I think) 13-3 very quickly; the other team brought in some pitcher whom nobody on either broadcast team recognized. He was also wearing another player's jersey, so that didn't help.
Eventually, Ray reported that somebody from the broadcast crew had managed to get a call through to the relevant bullpen. "Hey - who's pitching for you guys?"
The bullpen coach's response: "It's 13-3, who gives a %#@%?" Click.
el campysino - March 1, 2008
Totally off topic
is there a "cancel" button on comments any more? I was starting to write my own comment about the Ken/Ray funfest with Zito's postgame commentary, when I sway xbhaskarx's comment, and I wanted to cancel it. But there's no cancel button! Even after I replied to another comment, my unfinished comment was hanging around at the bottom of the screen!
Nick - March 1, 2008
Yes, I have the same problem
And then when I go back to read comments, I end up with a draft comment full of CXCXCCXCXCXXCX.
Englishmajor - March 1, 2008
Hah! That's going to be some clever person's new screen name
Nick - March 1, 2008
yeah, we've heard that problem before
we'll get a fix out for that soon

First regular broadcast of Spring Training, and they're going to have to come up with like 2 hours of filler to keep themselves awake.
Nick - March 1, 2008
You mean..?
Steinbrenner, apparently trying to emphasize that he has no fear of the Yankees' American League competition, has amped up the rivalry between the two teams, intentionally or not.
"Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of [expletive] that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.
"Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."
ChickenStanley - March 1, 2008

micdog2001 - March 1, 2008
I love..
James Woods.
Syphon - March 1, 2008
Yup
From James Woods himself
ChickenStanley - March 1, 2008
Unfortunately
Steinbrenner is dead wrong. At least about this not being a Red Sox country. Our country loves to jump aboard the bandwagon of winners and the Red Sox are suddenly winners. Just like you can rarely find an Angel fan down here who existed before 2002, you will likely find far fewer Sox fans outside of Boston before 2004 (people who didn't live in Boston either).
Tyler Bleszinski - March 1, 2008
Thats for sure
I have always found it funny how people change the hats I see them wearing every season to whoever is "hawt" this year. Though, where I live, the Richmond area, I actually now see more Washington caps then anything else, so I guess it has even moved passed just who is winning and on to what looks cool.
And I remember before 2002 when I was in SoCal, NO ONE was wearing angel caps. Thats why I hate those "fans" even more then yankee ones, who, over the years it seemed more to do with the "my dad was a yankee fan so I am one too" type thing.
Oakland fans may be fewer then others, but we don't change our caps! We wear them til they crawl off our heads on their own!
At least mine did...
ChickenStanley - March 1, 2008
I read that this morning, and the very last part
exemplifies what I hate about the Yankees and their fanbase. They really do think that the World Series belongs to the Yankees. It's just so utterly arrogant and obnoxious -- and, for the last, what, 7 years? totally untrue.
Nick - March 1, 2008
i think we should deny passports to every citizen of red sox nation

Oh my god, I look in and it's 16-2....do we REALLY HAVE AN OFFENSE. This is the second good offensive day in a row.
tomoyo - March 1, 2008
Don't forget that the A's did have blowouts like this last year
mixed in with a good deal of offensive frustration.
Nick - March 1, 2008
Yep I'll never forget that...that's why I'm hoping we finally have some stabiity, no more of this 3 bad days and 1 good day crap.
tomoyo - March 1, 2008
or do the Giants not have
pitching, defense, offense...
OaklandSi - March 1, 2008
Just tuned in...
Crap, totally forgot the game was on radio today!
Kimberly - March 1, 2008
Hey
When is the first TV game?
ChickenStanley - March 1, 2008
Opening day (3 am) in Japan :-(
HigherPie - March 1, 2008
Geeze
That sucks
The only good part is, 3 am is then I have to get up for sork, so I can see a bit of the game before I leave.
Unless I happen to be sick then :)
ChickenStanley - March 1, 2008
Oops
Thats suppose to be work, not sork. But then I may have meant sucky work.
Yeah, I'll go with that
ChickenStanley - March 1, 2008
Can you believe that!
Americas past times' opening day played at 3 am in another country.
lumabeach - March 1, 2008
so what if it is just spring....giddiness is in the air!
-zito still sucks
-cust still rocks
-the A's still dominate the Giants
-our offense looks pretty damn good
-our pitching looks pretty damn good
since72 - March 1, 2008
Yeah!
ChickenStanley - March 1, 2008
Weird...the Cal broadcast took over!
baseballgirl - March 1, 2008
I'm getting the Cal game too. Is that just on mlb.com?
Nick - March 1, 2008
Yes, that sucks
of course, for RAFS like me, we could actually get off the couch and turn on the radio instead of listening off mlb.com....or switch over to KNBR.
Englishmajor - March 1, 2008
??
xbhaskarx - March 1, 2008
we're still getting it
StrikeThree - March 1, 2008
bring back the A's!!!
anyway, while I was listening I had to call a company in Oregon, and as it turns out the person who I was dealing with is an A's fan...so we had a good time discussing the game while we were doing business
OaklandSi - March 1, 2008
ryan wing pitching
StrikeThree - March 1, 2008
The A's should definitely slow the game down
and try to work the ball into the post here. No reason to take early shots and let the Giants back into it with fast breaks.
How are the Giant's 3-point shooters?
Nick - March 1, 2008
I had to switch from 1550 am
to KFRC 106.9 fm -- the game is still on there
OaklandSi - March 1, 2008
KNBR announcers touting $10 seats
and the return of Crazy Crab.
Englishmajor - March 1, 2008
Those low-revenue teams will try anything!
(You know, assuming fans in the seats are a priority.)
FreeSeatUpgrade - March 1, 2008
So, EM, will we be seeing you next Friday?
How could you stand to miss these 23-hit wonders?
The Dogfather - March 1, 2008

baseballgirl - March 1, 2008
Grounder to second
20-5, A's
Brad: 1 IP, 2H, 1ER, 0BB, 0K, 1 HBP
HigherPie - March 1, 2008
Bankston made an out.
Put him on the bus.
The Dogfather - March 1, 2008
GO BROOKS!
That's my brother-in-law! I'm totally an A's fan this year (as long as Conrad makes the club).
Dex - March 1, 2008
Welcome Dex. They're not all quite this easy.
Tell us about Conrad -- we may need to create a mildly embarrassing nickname.
The Dogfather - March 1, 2008
Other than
"Dex's Brother-in-Law! Get a hit! Woot!"
Englishmajor - March 1, 2008
Nicknames
They used to call him Irish in high school. I think it was because he had red hair (before he shaved it off). I just asked his sister (my wife) if he had any weird nicknames. Apparently, "Little Skipper" was what a great aunt called him as a little kid.
No joke. You guys will like Brooks. Plays with a lot of heart and has good pop in his bat for a "smaller" guy. He's also smart on the basepaths. Knows how to turn a single into a double and a double into a triple. Led the minors in extra base hits a couple years ago.
Dex - March 1, 2008
couldn't find him on any of the A's minor league rosters...
is he on one of the lower A ball teams? Didn't look below Stockton.
FoolshGame22 - March 1, 2008
out of the Astro's organization
He's been stuck behind Craig Biggio and Chris Burke in the Astro's system since he got out of ASU. He's an invitee this year.
Dex - March 1, 2008
23-5
Englishmajor - March 1, 2008
Team record for hits in a game
Korach mentioned the Oakland record for hits in a 9-inning game (25). The all-time Athletics franchise record for hits in a 9-inning game is 29 (5/1/1929 vs. the Red Sox). The Oakland A's also got 29 hits in a 15-inning game at Texas (7/1/1979).
Soaker - March 1, 2008
that was very fun
OaklandSi - March 1, 2008
did you catch the game call
by Korach to open the postgame wrapup? That was Miggy's game winning hit to drive in Chavvy and cap a wonderful weekend series against the Yankees (was that 2003?)
OaklandSi - March 1, 2008
Giaunts announcers are trying to excuse Zito -- get this,
"the altitude is almost 1200-feet, so it's tough to break off a curve ball."
So, Let's see: 8 ER, 2/3 innings , that's [scribble scribble carry the 4] an ERA of 108 (point zito -- err zero)
The Dogfather - March 1, 2008
The A's score 23 runs...
...and Zito's ERA for the spring is like 180.00! I don't know about everyone else, but I sure like the looks of this lineup over last year's lineup. Sure, there are lots of variables and unknowns, but let's face it, that is because we don't know what these guys are capable of. Last year, it was a lot of the known, such as we know DJ was probably going to suck, BoCro was probably going to suck, Chavvy was probably going to deteriorate more, Kotsay was probably going to suck, Bradley was going to implode, Popeye was going to hit .199. This year, we have soooo many young, hungry guys with young bodies and fresh backs. I don't think I agree with the doom and gloom projections for this team. Yeah, it is spring. But I sure feel better about this team than last year's team.
since72 - March 1, 2008
most gratifying spring training game imaginable
If Zito was still actually good the Giants would have quite a nice Big 3 in their rotation, which would allow them to lose games 3-1 rather than 6-1 more often.
In other news, I think it's time to show a little more love for Cust in my fantasy draft. He can't be stoppppppppppppppppppppped!
ChadGod - March 1, 2008
post game show
barton said we are the Oakland DiamondSox with all the former chicago and arizona prospects in spring training right now. haha.
gotgreen - March 1, 2008
Okay, kids -- SAT question: Complete the series:
1, 11, 23, __ .
a) 32
b) 3
c) 36
d) 48
e) you want fries with that?
The Dogfather - March 1, 2008
C
Coffee13eans - March 1, 2008
Well, that was quick.
Yeah -- that's the best choice, although an argument can be made for "d" as well, I think.
The Dogfather - March 1, 2008
CCTimes reports that Selig attended the game wth Magowan.
Perhaps they discussed contracting the Giaunts?
The Dogfather - March 2, 2008
Speaking of which: in a combined A's-Giaunts roster,
... would anybody< from the West Bay, other than the Caincecums, make the team?
The Dogfather - March 2, 2008
Ziggy
Did anyone notice that when Brad pitched, all 6 guys he faced were left handed? Interesting way to be used the first time in a game for a right-handed submariner...
captain bubblehead - March 2, 2008
xbhaskarx - March 2, 2008
LOL @ Zito
And they pay him for what? lol
