Open Game Thread: Spring Training Game 3 - A's vs. Giants

The A's and Giants go at it today with the A's sending Greg Smith, who came over as a part of the Haren bounty, to the mound to face former Athletic and really overpaid Giant Barry Zito.

Yeah, yeah, I know it's spring training, but I do want the A's to beat the crap out of Zito whenever possible.

This also happens to be the first game on the radio airwaves in the Bay Area.  The A's have played two games so far this spring.  Both against the Brewers, blowing the Brewers out one game and getting blown out in the first game as tends to happen in Arizona.

And apparently Eric Chavez's status for the opener is in doubt.  I would seriously consider leaving Chavez home any way.  Who needs a guy who had three surgeries this past offseason and already needs an epidural sitting on a plane for 12 hours?

LET'S GO A'S!!!!

i didn't know today was a's - giants

is this on tv?

no TV

it's all college baseketball, BOO!

anybody working today

like me?

working is a relative term obviously.

working at home today

so i have the game on

Cotroneo: "Not one member of today's

starting lincup was on the Opening Day roster in 2007" - wow. From memory:

Suzuki
Barton
Mike Sweeney
Cust
Emil Brown
C. Gonzalez
Hannahan
Murphy
Petit

Not that bad really, considering Vince's point!

KenKo:

"A's in the grey tops...Giants in the unreadable black tops".

hahahahaha

no kidding...those are awful, along with the angels' all-red ones.

'Zooks doubles -

Barton gets him to third with a ground ball. Now, time for some...gulp...more situational hitting...

Suzuki scores on MSweeney's single

Ken and Ray say Mike is "one of the great gentlemen of the game". Cust is now hitting.

Sweeney steals second!
radio

i have to drive down to the bay area in a bit, what station is the game on?

probably

knbr...i'll go check

KFRC 106.9 for the A's side

KNBR for the Gnats

A's radio network

1550 AM, 106.9 FM

thanks everyone
Sweeny, RBI single
KFRC is broadcasting A's
If you hate Buancasting

You might be pleased to hear that on Wednesday and Thursday next week Buan is off, and the mlb.com audio pxp will be handled by Marty Lurie.

Cust and Brown both walked BTW

Bases are loaded for CG

not CG

murphy, hannahan, then gonzalez

I am so glad the A's didn't resign Zito.

The A's sent him as an Trojan Horse to destroy the Gaints from within.

Not like they needed a whole lot of help with that one
true but he is not helping

on the field or in their wallet

D-Murph

infeild single
2-0 A's bases still drunk

Cust and Brown score

Hannahan singles, Murphy to third.
Jeez Barry, let us eat our lunches dude.
Gonzalez is up now -- he and Hannahan switched from the posted lineup

CarGon take me away!
haha

i was thinking about this the other day but didn't want to post it. I'm not sure how many people will remember those commercials. Very nice.

Hannahan

2 rbi single
Carlos G up

gonzalez base hit to left

on a fastball away, another run scores. petit up.

Is Zito getting booed yet?
C-Gon rbi single

put on the opening day roster!

5-0.

Let's see what Petit can add...

RBI single by Petit!
petit singles, another run scores
wow, Zito is getting dinked around

what is it now 6-0?

"And action begins in the SF bullpen..."
Hey folks!!

Just downloaded the new mlb.com media player, and tuned in just in time to hear C-Gon's RBI single.

good times, good times
I'm pretty suspicious of MLB.com's media player updates

Their customer support sucks, and last year's update made it impossible to see any video on my Mac until I looked around on the web for help and found out that the plug-in I downloaded screws up one of the Mac's preference settings.

Hi guys!!!! Geez...I missed 15 min of the game, and I missed EVERYTHINNG!

Yeah..

Same here. :(

40 pitches for Zito so far...and only one out
lol

loaded again

You're not driving while posting, are you?
zito gone

7h, 6r, 2/3 ip

Zito is throwing all his pitches

so he can't say he's working on his fastball command. What's up with him? only 2/3rd of an inining.

And all of them evidently suck
Zito is always terrible in spring

But he was also terrible last season too for a good portion of the year.

"What's up with him?"

it's barry zito, why are you surprised?

Barry Zito does not belong in MLB

The guy is terrible.

Worst signing in history for Giants (LOL)

I don't hate the guy, I just know pathetic(ness) when I see it and I saw it coming 4 years ago.

When you have a fastball that tops out at 20 mph, you are in deep do do

Poor Barton

He has both outs this inning

Is there a mercy rule today?
Women who've given birth disagree

From the Slusser article on Chavez:

"Dr. Mark Rubin gave Chavez the epidural late Friday morning at the Arizona Center for Pain Relief in Phoenix. The epidural, which is essentially a cortisone shot, is used to reduce inflammation, not to mask pain."

But doesn't "edipural" just refer to the placement of the catheter in the epidural space?

I mean, they could use the needle to put anaesthetics in your back, or to put cortisone there.

Or, uhh, "epidural"

"edipural" probably refers to killing sphynxes and marrying your mother, or something.

Or steroids, or HGH. Or beer!
This is correct
bases loaded AGAIN!
Tony DeFrancisco coaching -- the Finder of Lost Loves!
well, that was alot of fun!
Zito's ERA

108.00

but then again, you know what they say about era.

it's not the size that matters

it's the motion of the ocean...so to speak

Why is this..

the only game on the mlb site to not have live updates? Annoying.

greg smith

it's tough to evaluate a young pitcher when he's facing the giants...

Still.....

It was a good inning pitched. Two strikeouts I believe and only a 10 pitch count.

it was a joke (but also the truth)
Yeah -- Randy Wynn is batting 3rd? Blech
yeah it would be nice if he were facing a challenging team, like KC or something
lolzito

(from mcc)

Look who's wearing green and gold again...

Is Barry a vegetarian?

Maybe she's trolling for Prince Fielder this year
I think the Prince Fielder trolling outfit looks more like this...

that is disgusting

and the meat looks gross too.

Prince went vegetarian this offseason

after reading the book "Skinny Bitch." I'm not kidding.

Well good for him, but that book sounds really hateful from what I've read of/about it
Not hateful.

But over the top, for sure. It's the Michael Moore-ish veg book. Sure, more tempered, academic, and/or thoughtful books are available on the subject, but Michael Moore-ish is what sells, and what gets headlines. The Skinny Bitches, regardless of their "rightness", were willing to capitalize on that.

I'm a vegan, for what it's worth.

The problem with what I've read

is that it basically seems to be saying to women, "You should hate your own body and hate yourself if you're not a size 2!! So become a vegan!!"

Yeah, that sucks. And is harmful.

Totally agree there.

Prince went veg due to the animal welfare arguments presented in the book, which is more what I was referring to.

great album
Yup, and an excellent band

In looking for the image online I read that the Undertones didn't have anything to do with the cover, which is plausible since it's a greatest hits collection. Though that story doesn't come from their own website.

You know what album I need to get? "Cast of Thousands" by the Adverts. It's one of those famously reviled punk albums -- mainly based on alleged complaints about its being overproduced -- and I always tended to accept that evaluation based on my experience with Penetrationwhose album "Moving Targets" really is overproduced mush, WAY worse than their live or demo stuff. But I've found a few cuts online from "Cast" and it actually sounds great.

I never got into the punkier UK stuff

I've probably only ever heard 1 or 2 songs by the Adverts.

But, man, I looooooooooved the Undertones -- and TPE was pretty damn great, at least around the time of Babble. That band (along with the original incarnation of Shriekback) is one of my Great Missed Opportunities, never having caught them live.

Thanks a lot for the credit...
Murphy

Single.....by murphy

Fosse- What's Bruce Bochy thinking right now?
Cotroneo- Where's Barry Bonds?

Suzuki

singles again 3-3 now 10 - 0

Who IS this team!?!?!?!?!

The future, that's who -

C-Gon: 2 for 2 with two line drives
Hannahan: 2 for 2 with two line drives - the guy is a line drive machine!
Suzuki: 3 for 3 with unkendallike solid contact

While no one's looking, the A's take the West in '08!!!

Don't you love March 1st optimism? :-)
I never had doubts bout...

the young hitters. Pitching however could be suspect.

And this is going to be the LONGEST GAME EVER!

Hey maybe we got a chance at the WS this year...

Oh wait thats right this is the giants we are playing

Pretty embarrassing to be 0-3 in the second, Barton.

Having made four outs
I thought you loved Barton, now you dissing him because he cant hit the giants? oh yeah right... sorry
barton sucks!!
This sucks, not on tv, radio dont work here.... AAARGHH
haha

fosse and korach totally making fun of zito. can someone transcribe that?

I didn't copy it down, but that was pretty surprising!

Ken did a version of the "I wasn't aggressive enough in the zone, all credit goes to the hitters they were patient and hit the ball hard."

I got a fuzzy radio connection

Giants got one single and the bottom of the 2nd ends.

Korach mocks Zito, AN style!

Imagining Barry's postgame comments:

"Well, I was giving the hitters too much credit, trying to be too fine, I need to throw strikes and let my stuff get guys out."

or words to that effect.

Korach's mocking of Zito

"sound bites" (according to Vince)

Trying to be too fine, need to be more aggressive, ...

guess they've heard this enough

Of course, I wouldn't really want to throw strikes

if they were pounded like Zito's were today.

Ken is on a roll

"We have no idea who is pitching for the Giants this inning...oh yes we do, it's Justin Case..."

what was funnier

is the Giants announcers had no idea who was pitching for them

Reminds me of

an ST game back around the early 90s. The A's were up by (I think) 13-3 very quickly; the other team brought in some pitcher whom nobody on either broadcast team recognized. He was also wearing another player's jersey, so that didn't help.

Eventually, Ray reported that somebody from the broadcast crew had managed to get a call through to the relevant bullpen. "Hey - who's pitching for you guys?"

The bullpen coach's response: "It's 13-3, who gives a %#@%?" Click.

Totally off topic

is there a "cancel" button on comments any more? I was starting to write my own comment about the Ken/Ray funfest with Zito's postgame commentary, when I sway xbhaskarx's comment, and I wanted to cancel it. But there's no cancel button! Even after I replied to another comment, my unfinished comment was hanging around at the bottom of the screen!

Yes, I have the same problem

And then when I go back to read comments, I end up with a draft comment full of CXCXCCXCXCXXCX.

Hah! That's going to be some clever person's new screen name
yeah, we've heard that problem before

we'll get a fix out for that soon

Man, you pop up everywhere! You're like Beetlejuice!

Here, I'll try it: clockwerks! clockwerks! clockwerks!

I have a question...

maybe I'm missing it, but how do I get rid of my avatar if I decide not to want one for a while?

we don't have a way to do that yet, but it's on the list of things to add soon
Who's pitching?

Giants announcers dunno
They said this guy # doesnt exist on their roster and Giants PR dept doesnt know either.

Matos

According to Gameday

Kevin Grybowski (sp?) according to the A's PR staff
Giants said he must have changed jerseys

and not tell anyone

Gryboski (without the w)

again according to Gameday

"Without the W" is the Giants mantra this year
wow, broadcast crew is SLAMMING

The G-Men. Not surprising with Fosse but I'm surprised by Ken and Vince.

woo hoo cust

Double, a's might have a chance this game

Cust is such..

a monster!!

Cust's OPS is 5000

It's more than a snack

It's Emil! (hattip RoyalsReview)

HOMER MURPHY!!!!! on an 0-2 pitch!!!

13-0

HOMERUN DONNIE MURPHY!

Murphy!

woohoo. 13-0

CXCXCXCXCXCXCXCXXC!
Carlos Gonzalez sucks.

Showed only warning track power on that double.

lol yea can only hit it 430 feet away
We are KEEPING Carlos Gonzalez

Who's with me?!?!?!

As long as he doesn't become this year's Chris Shelton
he's not a Rule5 pick, so...
heh I'm for it

What would the Outfield be?

Gonzalez/Denorfia/Buck?

I love the CXCXCXCXCXCX feature, btw.

How did I live without it?

I initially thought "what's the big deal about that"?

Now I find myself on other blogs CXCXCXCXing and wondering why nothing is happening..

if he can play center

YES

How many Giants pitchers do you think we'll see?
Gio in to pitch
Gonzalez in, time to outshine Gonzalez...
what were korach and vince saying bout the giants?
talking about wasting money on Rowand
OT: "Tight elbow" for Lackey

Nobody seems too concerned, yet.

Maybe they can transplant some of his jaw in there -- that oughta loosen the elbow right up.
mike sweeney 3 for 4
Cust

Another double, this guy's a monster!!

Haha

Jack 'The Bambino' Cust

Cust has another 'double'.

14-0 A's

Rajai Davis loses Custs flyball in the sun

Should be ready for those easy daytime conditions at the Phone Booth

RBI for Emil Brown...8 different lineup spots have driven in a run

Bring on..

Boston!

Man the announcers are really jumping in the deep end of the pool today

First regular broadcast of Spring Training, and they're going to have to come up with like 2 hours of filler to keep themselves awake.

You mean..?

Steinbrenner, apparently trying to emphasize that he has no fear of the Yankees' American League competition, has amped up the rivalry between the two teams, intentionally or not.

"Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of [expletive] that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.

"Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."

is your sig line from Family Guy?
I love..

James Woods.

Yup

From James Woods himself

Unfortunately

Steinbrenner is dead wrong. At least about this not being a Red Sox country. Our country loves to jump aboard the bandwagon of winners and the Red Sox are suddenly winners. Just like you can rarely find an Angel fan down here who existed before 2002, you will likely find far fewer Sox fans outside of Boston before 2004 (people who didn't live in Boston either).

Thats for sure

I have always found it funny how people change the hats I see them wearing every season to whoever is "hawt" this year. Though, where I live, the Richmond area, I actually now see more Washington caps then anything else, so I guess it has even moved passed just who is winning and on to what looks cool.

And I remember before 2002 when I was in SoCal, NO ONE was wearing angel caps. Thats why I hate those "fans" even more then yankee ones, who, over the years it seemed more to do with the "my dad was a yankee fan so I am one too" type thing.

Oakland fans may be fewer then others, but we don't change our caps! We wear them til they crawl off our heads on their own!

At least mine did...

I read that this morning, and the very last part

exemplifies what I hate about the Yankees and their fanbase. They really do think that the World Series belongs to the Yankees. It's just so utterly arrogant and obnoxious -- and, for the last, what, 7 years? totally untrue.

i think we should deny passports to every citizen of red sox nation
And they have to take at least one Yankees fan with them into exile
Anyone know..

how fast Gonzalez is throwing his fastball?

Ill-advised head-first slide

LOL. Gnats people probably are marveling at how gritty he is.

Damn 430 foot..

CF wall. Cust and Gonzalez both shoulda had HRs in almost any other ML Park.

Don't tell me those boneheads even built their ST park for Bonds
RF wall is 340...

LF Wall is 360.

Next pitcher up for the A's....

Arnold Leon!!

Winter, Summer, Spring or Fall....

.... I LOVE IT when the A's clock the Giants. I'm looking forward to giving 'em hell on KNBR Monday. First call of the New Year.

I'll have to listen to KNBR

on Monday. LOL

that should be fun
Ken is on a roll

"We have no idea who is pitching for the Giants this inning...oh yes we do, it's Justin Case..."

Old comment reposting again

sorry about that....perhaps I should stop until the bugs are worked out.

did this happen because you had started posting a comment at the bottom?

and then couldn't cancel it?

or was it something else?

I entered text in the comment box

and hit preview; somehow, the earlier comment text popped up as I hit Post..

ugh

mike sweeny hit by pitch on the hand. hope he's okay!

Wow...the A's 'O' is ridiculous today!

Maybe!

We will lead the league in runs this year!

Or am I just being seduced by this one game as Ken said..?

heehee

Two games ;-)

Yesterday was more of the same

Oh yeah!

The seduction is moving into lust which will turn into love

I love this team! *sob*

Here we go again!

AHHH!!! Santiago Casilla is here!!!! That's good...

woohoo!

16-2 on a base hit from conrad!

Oh my god, I look in and it's 16-2....do we REALLY HAVE AN OFFENSE. This is the second good offensive day in a row.

Don't forget that the A's did have blowouts like this last year

mixed in with a good deal of offensive frustration.

Yep I'll never forget that...that's why I'm hoping we finally have some stabiity, no more of this 3 bad days and 1 good day crap.

or do the Giants not have

pitching, defense, offense...

Just tuned in...

Crap, totally forgot the game was on radio today!

Hey

When is the first TV game?

Opening day (3 am) in Japan :-(
Geeze

That sucks

The only good part is, 3 am is then I have to get up for sork, so I can see a bit of the game before I leave.

Unless I happen to be sick then :)

Oops

Thats suppose to be work, not sork. But then I may have meant sucky work.

Yeah, I'll go with that

Can you believe that!

Americas past times' opening day played at 3 am in another country.

so what if it is just spring....giddiness is in the air!

-zito still sucks
-cust still rocks
-the A's still dominate the Giants
-our offense looks pretty damn good
-our pitching looks pretty damn good

Weird...the Cal broadcast took over!

I'm getting the Cal game too. Is that just on mlb.com?
Yes, that sucks

of course, for RAFS like me, we could actually get off the couch and turn on the radio instead of listening off mlb.com....or switch over to KNBR.

we're still getting it
bring back the A's!!!

anyway, while I was listening I had to call a company in Oregon, and as it turns out the person who I was dealing with is an A's fan...so we had a good time discussing the game while we were doing business

ryan wing pitching
The A's should definitely slow the game down

and try to work the ball into the post here. No reason to take early shots and let the Giants back into it with fast breaks.

How are the Giant's 3-point shooters?

I had to switch from 1550 am

to KFRC 106.9 fm -- the game is still on there

KNBR announcers touting $10 seats

and the return of Crazy Crab.

Those low-revenue teams will try anything!

(You know, assuming fans in the seats are a priority.)

So, EM, will we be seeing you next Friday?

How could you stand to miss these 23-hit wonders?

'scuse me -- 25-hit wonders.
Robnett homers!!

After a Linden triple.

Condrad Homers! Back-to-back for the A's

Homerun Conrad!!

'scuse me, 26-hit wonders.
Shall we shoot for 30??
Runs or hits?

Yes.

error makes 20
Where's Janikowski?
Pitching for the Giants
Haha

that made me snort

Thanks, folks. I'll be here all season.
And

I'll make sure to tip the waitress

BRAD ZIEGLER IS IN!
Ziegler's in to pitch!
This warrants play-by-play...

Fly out to center, 1 away

Double to left
When he

gets out of the inning, lets all get ziggy with our radio!

Juuuuuuust a bit outside...

Runner moves to third

Hit Batter

Ziggy's setting up the double play chance

Settle down, Ziggy!!! Let's go!

He just wants to get his work in is all

He didn't want a 6 pitch inning ;)

Sac fly to right

Fiorantino (sp) diving catch

Long single to left

1st and 3rd, 2 away

Take care folks

I'm off to get some sun.

See you next game!

Grounder to second

20-5, A's

Brad: 1 IP, 2H, 1ER, 0BB, 0K, 1 HBP

Hmmmm..okay outing for Zig

And by 'okay', I mean 'he needs to be absolutely great and he wasn't, but I think he can be'.

Grounder to second

20-5, A's

Brad: 1 IP, 2H, 1ER, 0BB, 0K, 1 HBP

Bankston made an out.

Put him on the bus.

GO BROOKS!

That's my brother-in-law! I'm totally an A's fan this year (as long as Conrad makes the club).

Welcome Dex. They're not all quite this easy.

Tell us about Conrad -- we may need to create a mildly embarrassing nickname.

Other than

"Dex's Brother-in-Law! Get a hit! Woot!"

Nicknames

They used to call him Irish in high school. I think it was because he had red hair (before he shaved it off). I just asked his sister (my wife) if he had any weird nicknames. Apparently, "Little Skipper" was what a great aunt called him as a little kid.

No joke. You guys will like Brooks. Plays with a lot of heart and has good pop in his bat for a "smaller" guy. He's also smart on the basepaths. Knows how to turn a single into a double and a double into a triple. Led the minors in extra base hits a couple years ago.

couldn't find him on any of the A's minor league rosters...

is he on one of the lower A ball teams? Didn't look below Stockton.

out of the Astro's organization

He's been stuck behind Craig Biggio and Chris Burke in the Astro's system since he got out of ASU. He's an invitee this year.

Team record for hits in a game

Korach mentioned the Oakland record for hits in a 9-inning game (25). The all-time Athletics franchise record for hits in a 9-inning game is 29 (5/1/1929 vs. the Red Sox). The Oakland A's also got 29 hits in a 15-inning game at Texas (7/1/1979).

that was very fun
did you catch the game call

by Korach to open the postgame wrapup? That was Miggy's game winning hit to drive in Chavvy and cap a wonderful weekend series against the Yankees (was that 2003?)

Giaunts announcers are trying to excuse Zito -- get this,

"the altitude is almost 1200-feet, so it's tough to break off a curve ball."

So, Let's see: 8 ER, 2/3 innings , that's [scribble scribble carry the 4] an ERA of 108 (point zito -- err zero)

The A's score 23 runs...

...and Zito's ERA for the spring is like 180.00! I don't know about everyone else, but I sure like the looks of this lineup over last year's lineup. Sure, there are lots of variables and unknowns, but let's face it, that is because we don't know what these guys are capable of. Last year, it was a lot of the known, such as we know DJ was probably going to suck, BoCro was probably going to suck, Chavvy was probably going to deteriorate more, Kotsay was probably going to suck, Bradley was going to implode, Popeye was going to hit .199. This year, we have soooo many young, hungry guys with young bodies and fresh backs. I don't think I agree with the doom and gloom projections for this team. Yeah, it is spring. But I sure feel better about this team than last year's team.

most gratifying spring training game imaginable

If Zito was still actually good the Giants would have quite a nice Big 3 in their rotation, which would allow them to lose games 3-1 rather than 6-1 more often.

In other news, I think it's time to show a little more love for Cust in my fantasy draft. He can't be stoppppppppppppppppppppped!

post game show

barton said we are the Oakland DiamondSox with all the former chicago and arizona prospects in spring training right now. haha.

Okay, kids -- SAT question: Complete the series:

1, 11, 23, __ .

a) 32
b) 3
c) 36
d) 48
e) you want fries with that?

Well, that was quick.

Yeah -- that's the best choice, although an argument can be made for "d" as well, I think.

CCTimes reports that Selig attended the game wth Magowan.

Perhaps they discussed contracting the Giaunts?

Speaking of which: in a combined A's-Giaunts roster,

... would anybody< from the West Bay, other than the Caincecums, make the team?

Ziggy

Did anyone notice that when Brad pitched, all 6 guys he faced were left handed? Interesting way to be used the first time in a game for a right-handed submariner...

LOL @ Zito

And they pay him for what? lol
