Open Game Thread: Spring Game 2 - A's vs. Brewers

Happy Leap Day, AN!

As a kid I thought a February 29th birthday was the ultimate short-term pain, long-term gain.

Sure, you'd only get a birthday cake and presents every four years. But one day you would be the most feared "6-year-old" in the history of T-Ball.  And at age "10" - with back hair and a grey goatee, in the twilight of your career - you could put the ole' Little League team on your back one last time, terrifying prepubescent hitters on the mound and carrying the squad all the way to Williamsport.

What can we learn from this story?

  1. I was wierd, baseball-obsessed, and overly analytical as a little kid, too.
  2. You should tell your children early on that Leap babies age just like normal people do, so that your kids don't harbor the same irrational fantasies I did.
  3. Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez, who is secretly 152 years old, somehow found a way to do this, and I hate him for it.

After a 7-1 loss in yesterday's opener, The A's conclude the month of February and their two-game series with the Brewers this afternoon at 12:05.  Dallas Braden gets the start for the A's, while righthander Dave Bush and lefty Manny Parra (one of the Brewers' best prospects) are each scheduled to throw two innings for the Brew Crew. Eric Gagne is scheduled to appear as well.

Looking ahead to the rest of the weekend: Saturday vs. Giants @ 12:05 p.m., Sunday vs. Rockies at 12:05 p.m.

Kotsay still grounding out to 2nd...

So far he hasn't pulled a Kendall.

But Chavy did pull a Kotsay...

out 4-5 days with lower back stiffness.

Getting an epidural? So he's experiencing preemptive sympathy labor pains?

he was put through a workout yesterday

and were to be judged on his progress based on how he felt after the workout.

Evidently, not good.

Do the announcers know that the Braves

have a new GM? They act like Schuerholz is still the GM! They also just said that Bobby Cox was the GM in charge of the draft just now.

Rick Honeycutt sighting!
Disgusting

They HAD to bring the RedSox into this.

I updated the front page!

Hope no one minds!

Good, looks like the flu doesn't last long
nope, it doechahccoughcoughblarghvoimitarghcaksdmasd
why isn't hannnananannnanahan playing?

Haha...did anyone hear the Outlook noise? I checked my computer just in case ;-)

Wow...shades of yesterday!

Leadoff single for Buck!!!!

I just heard the Outlook noise too
wow

yesterday the game thread was jumping. today, not so much.

Infield single by Ellis...2 guys on!

Where IS everyone?

Really.

I guess that was all the winter pent-up demand yesterday....either that or everyone was so inspired they are all at the game!

After Cust's HR

it DOES sound like half of AN is at the game!

Busy moving Chavy (further) down my draft list
working

I mean, really working today...didn't have a chance even to check online

heard noise as well

weird?

It's Buan's computer

Not sure if he knows how to turn it off

Or if it's part of his "please email me, please" strategy. Like having the phones ringing in the background during public radio pledge drives.

{gasp!}

Next thing, you'll tell us that the tote bags and coffee cups are made using slave labor.

No, just the programs

But seriously -- I didn't mean to imply that the phones are fake, just that there is no reason to have the sound of them on the air, except that it encourages people to call (maybe).

Ellis singles, Buck to 2nd
Bases loaded

No one out...uh oh!!!!

Hoping for a triple play

Just to see how Buan would call it.

I lose.
Can you have a grand slam

and a triple play on the same play?

Runner from third scores, runner from second never touches home plate and is passed on the basepaths by the batter and the runner from first?

Would that work, or would there only be two outs?

Then the batter misses 2nd base, appeals 3 outs
bases are drunk!!
Grand Slam JAck Cust
Jaaaaaack

CUST!

GRAND SLAM!!!!

FOR CUST!!!! YEAH BABY!!!!

Over the Farmer John sign...

everyone wins sausages!

oh man

I wanted to call the slam but I didn't want to jinx it.

good thinking

please remember that during the season

DJ pops out, Crosby out 5-3
Good, looks like the flu doesn't last long
New AN 3.0 Bug (or Feature)

I had actually composed a comment about Suzuki's single, but as I hit Preview, the text of my first comment in this thread reappeared in the box. I had already decided to post the Suzuki comment so I clicked on Post before I realized that the text in the box had changed. Then when I tried to post a new comment, the text of other comments I made in this thread kept reappearing -- I had to close the window and come back to AN in order to post this. Very strange.

that's a bug

what browser and operating system are you using?

Safari on Tiger

I have now changed over to Firefox, but I can't get audio to work here. (see upcoming reply to Blez).

Suzuki singles, C-Gon pops out.

4-1 after 1

haha Kendall getting heckles

Hilarious...

As is Buan's reaction

"gee golly gosh, what's that all about?"

THATS the Kendall I know

Kendall grounds into a 6-4-3 DP...OF COURSE HE DID!

But at least he can see...

the ball off his bat with greater clarity.

yeah, I don't think his eyes

were the problem

Kendall does, what Kendall did best for the

A's

the gameday audio

Live boxscore is anything but. It still says 1-0 Brewers (real score A's 4, Brewcrew 1)

The A's putting up a crooked number

Overwhelmed the system.

Overwhelmed me, for sure!

I still can't get the audio

And all apologies to those who own Macs, but I never had an issue with this when I owned a PC. UGH!

It's fine on my Mac

What browser are you using?

Firefox

The most recent version. It looks like it comes up OK, but audio just isn't there.

Can you hear other online audio?
Yeah

I was just listening to a podcast a little while ago. It's got me perplexed. I feel like I'm missing the spring!

I just switched to Firefox from Safari to see what's up

and when I go to sign in to Gameday Audio, the spaces for entering my email address and password won't allow me to input. I tried to find an alternative place to sign in, but no luck so far. Is this what's happening to you, or are you signed in but just not hearing anything.

You can sign in

On the MLB.com homepage (top right in tiny letters).

Once you do that, when the audio box pops up, you shouldn't have to log in again.

I'm signed in

At least that's what it seems like and it looks like the audio is streaming, but I'm just not hearing anything.

Turn on your speakers. :)
Sorry buddy...

The only other thing I can think of is to try the "Original Media Player" if you're on the new one, or vice versa. (There's a link for that on the top right of the media player)

Yeah, I switched back to Firefox

could log in, thanks to HP, but couldn't hear anything until I used the Original Recipe player.

For some reason

I always seem to have problems EVERY single year during spring training with the audio.

Whoa, the whole broadcast team is around

guess they are getting ready for Sat's game

Lenny Di Nardo is now on the mound,
What inning is it?

I can't get the gameday stuff at work and the "live" boxscore is a joke. Can anybody give a quick summery since the Jack Cust bomb?

Thanks

Really nothing has happened. DiNardo is in...

4-1 A's; bottom of the third.

Cust up

Can someone please post

...the Gameday link?

Don't think they do it for ST

There was one posted yesterday.

n/t

It's still way behind

But here ya go

Jack Cust is my Hero

That is all.

HOLY CRAP!!!

CUST HITS ANOTHER HR!!!!

Cust is the man

We all know it.

Mid-May Form

for Cust.

No need to wait for "mid-season" to get the "form".

5-1 now in the bottom of the third

thanks to SPARTACUST.

is there any

radio for the game? didn't say in the paper so i assume not.

Per the A's website

The first radio game is tomorrow. Not sure how accurate that is.........

that's what i just saw too

good looking out. this is too exciting already.

It's accurate

7 of the ~23 A's Spring games will be on the radio, the first being tomorrow's game. The rest are all MLB.com audio (Buancasts) only.

There is a link to the broadcast schedule on my recent Fanpost

I couldn't find it so I asked AN and they found it. The Post is titled "ST games on the radio?"

sweet

i haven't been on in a couple days, i'll check it out

audio

is there any way to listen to the game other than through mlb audio? The radio picks up tomorrow right?

Runners 2&3, 1 out for the Brewers

Weeks K's 2 outs 4 K's for

Lenny

ameron flies out to CF, inning

over

Fosse is sticking up for Cust's fielding

Guess he didn't see that game where Cust dropped a can of corn in right field in the 1st inining.

Fosse sticking up for someone?

With little objectivity? No way?

A's done with 4th...going to top of 5th.

Score: Cust: 5, Brewers: 1

I said it first, Buan.

Embree how pitching.

Brook (sp?) Conrad is now playing 2nd.

Embree NOW pitching

Conrad is called 'gritty'. Oh dear.

Easy fly ball, one out.

Base hit drops in...crowd is getting on Buck for not making more of an effort on that play.

Langerhans would have made that play!

Nostalgic for that electric week last seasons, when our outfield was All-Star Caliber!

Uh, AA-All Stars..

Conrad

I remember after the '06 season in which Conrad had a pretty monster year at AA, a decent amount of knowledgeable 'stros fans wanted him to start at 2B instead of Biggio in '07. Then Conrad crashed and burned in AA last season hitting under .200.

I'd rather Buck not get hurt

stay safe Travis.

Hart hits a triple, run scores.

Embree gives up a couple of runs.

Now...the bottom of 5th, 5-3 A's.

Did he throw anything besides fastballs?

That didn't work very well for Joe yesterday, perhaps the brewcrew hits the heat well.

I honestly don't know.

Leap Day birthday

signed to play for the Pirates till his 21st birthday

5-3 A's, to the bottom of the 5th...

Sweeney pops up. One out.

Mike Sweeney pops out to the 1st baseman
ok ...i'm new

someone clue me in how i can see this or hear this from way far away.

Go to MLB.com, click on 'Multimedia' and look for 'GameDay audio'. It will usually let you listen if you have ever had an account. Just enter the credentials.

Sorry, it's 'Audio and Video', not Multimedia.

MLB.tv

is how I'm listening, not sure how it would be done without paying... :(

Blah blah blah blah "Crosby's new approach" blah blah

you were saying
Wow, it's like MAGIC!

Welcome that phrase to the game threads!

Blah blah blah blah "A's win World Series" blah blah
Blah blah blah blah "Harden throw 200 innings" blah blah
throws. It wasn't a command.

It works either way.

"Harden, throw 200 innings".

Well....

it might just work!

Crosby with a 2 run shot
2-run HOMERUN

FOR CROSBY!!!!

Yes, you read that right!!!!

Buan:

"that is clearly a positive development".

Suzuki has 2nd hit for him.

Well, I'm back

Decided I'll pay beginning tomorrow (March)...so for today, would you keep me up on the score and who is at least pitching and batting? Thanks.

Moving over for the catch in center field, is

whoever is playing center field. Robert Buan with in depth inestigations

can cust play 3rd?

Huston Street is pitching. Top of 6th.

Huston gives up a leadoff double
Score is 6 to 2?

7-2. Crosby's HR was a 2-run

I thought it was 7-3, Embree gave up 2, Braden gave up

1 run.

Just kidding

Forgot about the third run!

Streets gets 2nd out.

Fly ball, 3 outs.

7-3, bottom of 6.

Painful

Buan's stuttering... he must be checking his email or on twitter.

It could be worse

ALL the guys on KNBR have speech impediments

i wouldn't know

they don't broadcast the a's so i don't listen to them

I started listening this off season

for Warriors info on the drive home from work. It's absolutely horrible radio.

And their traffic nymphette, Lisa: "KNBAiiirrre"
The first time

I thought the name of the evening drive time show was Erasure & Mr.T. I thought it was some kind of sick 80's tribute. I still don't know the real name of the show, Eraser & Mystery?

Razor and Mr.T, I don't know why Ralph is the razor, they must say his razor

shrp tongue??? Mr T. is Tom Tolbert.

Maybe he cut his tongue with the razor

i.e. why can't I understand what that guy just said? Oh, it's the Razor.

It is he helium tank that is blocking the microphone, but you can

alwqays understand when he is pimping, Amici's

So Tom is the one pimping McDonalds
I think Herb Caen gave him the nickname

as a description of his voice.

I miss Herb Caen

that is all.

Lisa Cruz, who used to be "Dana Cruz"

KNBR never answered my e-mail as to why she changed her name??

Or why her twin sister took over.

Gagne pitching to Murphy.

Buck has a stand-up double; has been on base all 4 times.

Buck and Cust

Can we just let Travis Buck and Jack Cust have all the at bats this season?

Depends on how fast they can change jerseys

"Now batting, number..."

Buck with a 1 out double Buck is 2-2

with 2 walks

SWEENEY!!!! WOO HOO!!!

RBI Double, 8-3 A's.

Cunningham single scores Sweeney!

9-3 A's.

Gagne...um...is sucking.

he hasn't missed a beat
Or in LOLcat fashion

SUCKY PICHER
IS SUCKING

Buan must be really hallucinating, he just

called a stolen base for the A's, and an rbi single for DJ, and then he said the A''s reached double digit runs.

Dan Johnson RBI single, scores Cunningham

10-3 A's

Gagne is toast.. has been

every since they started to test these guys:)

Jeff Gray pitching - tons of other A's changes in the field

First pitch hit for a homer.

Hmmm...

10-4 A's

bbg...

are you live blogging from the park?

Haha...no, from my desk at work. Live blogging will be next week.

10-4, going to bottom of 7th.

This is our year!

Noone is even going to be looking at the A's with all of the giveaways over the winter. I just have a feeling on the 40th year in Oakland, this is the year the A's win it all with the help of a whole year healthy Rich Harden. Go A's! BTW purchase the MLB package. Totally worth it listening to the Audio!

Some pitcher I've never heard of is pitching.

that's probably going to happen alot

this season

word!

Can't wait for "Denorfia is pitching, with DiNardo in centerfield.."

TV Schedule is up...

...commence bitching now:

http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/schedule/broadcast.jsp?c_id=oak

Is it me...

OR are there more games being aired this year then last year?

That being said, when the hell are the A's going to get off their asses and move into the 21st century. It is rediculus that the only way to get 100% of the games is through a format that entertained our Grandparents when they were kids. Television has been around for over 60 years, it is time for the team that would be from Silicon Valley to board the train!

I like not having to pay

comcast or the dish companies for broadcasts that i should be able to get without them...at least once in a while.

Sweet

a total of two nationally televised games...at 3 in the morning on week days.

Story of the A's

the last few years? Hammer mediocre pitching, but struggle against anyone halfway decent.

hallmark of a mediocre team?
pitcher is Troy Cate

stats here

scout.com profile

here

HAHAHAHA!!!

They are talking about batting Kendall 9th. :-)

A's win!

Nice! Yesterdays game was an abheration! No more flu today and look how much better we play!

"back hair and a grey goatee, in the twilight of your career"

Dammit, you've been using the sekrit admin functions of AN 3.0 to spy on me, haven't you, NSJ?

Those are the perks, my friend
