Hello Athletics Nation,
Today is the big day. We've switched your community over to the new SB Nation sports blog platform. My name is Trei and I'm one of the guys who helped build this new home for y'all. I'm here to help you get adjusted and give you a quick tour of what is new and what has changed. Also, if you have questions or trouble with the new system, I'll be around to answer them and point you in the right direction.
Before we get started, I want to let you know that you're the first blog in the SB Nation family to make this transition. You can thank Tyler for that. We still consider this a beta platform so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs or if everything isn't exactly right yet. In fact, we hope you'll take the time to report any problems you encounter. All you need to do is email bugreport@sbnation.com.
Lets get started...
Many readers across all of our blogs told us they wanted one account that they could use on any SB Nation blog. We agreed and have created one SB Nation network account so that you only have to login once to gain access to many blogs. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate on all of our blogs. However, we didn't want to encourage everyone to start visiting rival team blogs and initiating flame wars. To maintain the friendly confines of our communities we ask that you explicitly join each blog you want to actively participate on. It's an easy 2-click process, but it means accepting the different community guidelines that each blog sets out for itself. As just as you join each blog individually, you can be banned on each blog individually.
To make this work, we're requiring that everyone create a new SB Nation network account. Don't worry - you won't lose all of your old comments and diaries. We have created a simple process for you to claim your old blog account. In most cases you should be able to keep your old username, but a few of you may have to choose something new. The reason is that every other community in SB Nation will be going through this same transition and some of them have the same username that you do. We tried to be as fair as possible about deciding who gets to keep which name using a formula that takes into account length of membership, amount of activity and how recently you've been active. The important thing is that whatever name you have will be retroactively put on all of your old comments and diaries. Some of you already have multiple accounts on different SB Nation blogs; we've got you covered too because you can claim more than one old blog account.
Alright, now that I've explained all that - let's get you started:

First we changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary we inherited that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for *fans* and these are the blog *posts y'all make. So we called them FanPosts. Next time you're at the bar and you're telling someone to go check out your sports opinion online, you don't have to suggest they read your diaries.
But the changes go deeper than the new name. FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - they now include your avatar so you get more credit for the time you invest in writing great posts. We also built a new editor that has a WYSIWYG view for easy formatting, auto-saving of drafts so you don't lose your work and a spell-checker. And in addition to adding basic tags, you can now associate teams, players and games with our special auto-complete tools. These will put your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network.
Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor to learn more.
We've simplified the tagging system. The big change here is that only the authors of stories or FanPosts can add tags to their posts. We no longer track changes to the tags either.
Athletics Nation now has all the basic information about your favorite team and every other team in the MLB. During games you'll see a regularly updated line score, as the season progresses we'll track team stat totals and leaders. This is just our first step so look for us to publish more detailed and archival stats in the future. The best part about all this sports data is that we've integrated it directly into the blog so now we special pages that will aggregate all the blog posts written about games, players and teams.
Now you can reward those folks who take the time to look up stats and make smart arguments in the comments.
To help the moderators on a site, we've built-in tools that let you flag comments that are spam, trolling or just plain inappropriate. No one else can see those flaggings, but the moderators can.
Many members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote and you don't need to write a full FanPost. We've got you covered and we made these quick hits really easy. Now you have a tool that is designed for sharing YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.
For those of you who are experienced internet hunter and gatherers of Athletics material, install the bookmarklet to share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.
It's much easier to go find that post about a certain deadline trade or a playoff game. Browse by year and month.
When you upload an image as your avatar we'll use it on your profile, your FanPosts and all your comments.
Now that we have unified SB Nation network accounts, your profile will be your central hub for all of your activity on any blogs you're a member of.
The bar up at the top will stay with you on all SB Nation blogs. It's a quick way to login and logout. When you're logged in, you'll see your avatar and screen name. Click that and you'll find your profile. There is a button next to that for jumping to your dashboard with links for editing your settings, profile, account and any FanPosts or FanShots you've published. Once we add more blogs to the new SB Nation network, the My Blogs menu will be a handy way of navigating between the blogs you're a member of.
There are plenty more small changes and additions we've made so take a careful look around and explore this new system.
We appreciate your patience as we jump into this beta together. AN is one of the best sports blog communities and we know you'll help us get this new platform ready for all the other SB Nation blogs.

Quick impressions
The structural changes look really good.
The visual change I don't care for, but that's inevitable. I'm an old curmudgeon and I always hate superficial change. I'll get used to the new look, and it's the structural changes that really matter.
Very happy to have a chance to change my username without losing my history. :-)
Somewhere in the course of changing my profile text, it got truncated and I lost a few sentences. There's plenty of room to put them back, but I don't remember exactly what it said before. :-(

the additional team data embedded in the site. Makes it a "one stop shopping" for team information place. Looking great.
I dont like the avatars-clutters up the screen too much. In fact my main complaint is I feel crowded and cluttered here-as opposed to the previous incarnation of AN which had a wide open feel to me.

Constructive criticism
On old AN 2.0, the tab would default to "post" after you hit "preview." That is, you could type your comment, tab over to "preview," hit enter, review your post and hit enter again to post, all without moving your mouse.
On AN 3.0 UltraMegaXtreme, the tab doen't default to "post" so I actually have to move the mouse over to the post button. It might sound like a small complaint, but it really changes the speed at which you can comment, which is critical on a game thread.
Also, I don't like that the comment boxes are so small. When you're typing a long comment, it's nice to see everything you've written. This feels a little bit cramped.

When I write a long comment
I usually type it elsewhere then cut and paste.
I guess that's a habit left over from sites where you type several paragraphs and then the browsers zaps them and there's nothing saved.

CSS warnings
Be sure to fix up all the CSS warnings - I get a ton of them, and many are just a bit sloppy!
(I know, everyone is a critic.)
Don't end your selectors in ','
.sports_data_widget,
.col-side .sports_data_widget,
{ ...}
has an extra comma, which messes up the parsing.
I suggest you take those warning seriously - means your site isn't laying out the way you think.
(I suggest using Firefix + firebug to observe all that stuff.)

Firebug is nice!
You can edit the css in place to see the effect dynamically. You can try the change, see what it does.
Firebug does occasionally mess up some of the background data fetches, and will slow down browsing - not great to leave it on all the time.

I used to be able to check easily whether there were any replies to my comments. I can't find a similar display here -- the "recent activity" thing doesn't seem to indicate whether there are any replies.

Had to Change my Name
Pretty sure there's nobody with my handle, but this site no longer recognized me or any of my passwords. Maybe I'm an old curmudgeon, but so far I utterly hate this thing. Hate the lack of Rotoworld. Hate the idea of these avatars. Hate the bells, whistles and extra junk. Hate what it takes to find anything.
And I'm not surprised. Virtually every site I've gone to that's "upgraded" itself has degraded itself. Luckily Monkeyball and Grover and PaulThomas and Blez and all the smart people who make this place worthwhile are still here. Instead of being packaged in the body of a real person, they now all look like the web version of Mitt Romney. Bleah.

I love how...
you can get the number of comments without scrolling through 80 pages now. Admittedly, that was the fun of it.
And I have problems the screen size, mainly that the section with the front page stories is too narrow. That's about it, except maybe the clutter at the top. But the clutter at the top is okay, since it's helpful. I think the widescreen thing was mentioned earlier, but I read it before I got the confirmation e-mail.

Two things I'm missing
When I look at a list of comments from someone...let's say salb918...the recent list says "posted a comment on "(FanPost Title)" on AthleticsNation, Date/Time. I liked seeing the title of the comment; that helps when you're looking for a specific comment from a previous discussion. "A comment" is obviously less helpful.
Bigger deal: on salb's page, I can see his list of the last 10 comments or so, but in the old AN I could see the salb comment inventory going back for years, 30 comments at a time, just by clicking "previous 30 comments". No such option apparent now. Can we regain that functionality?
Still very curious about the Search functionality, but I haven't test driven it enough yet.

...and my company (large UK bank) prevent employees from viewing blogs (through use of internet proxies and filtering software) - the previous version of AN wasn't on their list of blocked sites but I suspect that any URL without a www at the start are on a blacklist by default. Major bummer! :(

Slowness
It is a little odd, at home on a Mac (firefox 3.0beta) it is sluggish, but still very usable. At work, running firefox 2.0.12 on windows, it is unbearably slow. It takes minutes to load pages (and you can't even scroll down while it is loading), and seems to always be waiting for assets.sbnation.com.

Anyone else having trouble
using the 'auto login'? I go to check the 'remember me' button when I log in, and the page just hangs forever until I manually refresh. Then it shows me logged in, but as soon as I close the page, I'm gone.

I log in. It automatically takes me to sbnation.com. I try to click back on AN (either by using the link or manually typing it in) and it just hangs. I manually refresh at this point, and it logs me in, but the second I close the page, I'm back to square one.

They're working feverishly
on the IE6 issues right now. Apparently it's the browser they did the most testing with, but you fix one problem in that browser and another arises.

How do I search old comments ?
I only seem to be able to search stories. The search function seems much more restricted than the old one (which was limited enough already). Date is about the last thing I ever want to search on, so archiving by month isn't particularly helpful. Hopefully I'm missing something ...

yeah, search is very basic
we've replaced the search engine with something much more powerful, but we only built the baseline features on top of it for this first release. in the future we'll be adding much more advanced search options.
one thing you can't see yet because we haven't brought all the other SB Nation blogs over to the new platform is that we added the ability to search all our MLB blogs and our entire network.
also, we added some cool search stuff like players, games and teams. for example search on Texas Rangers pulls back games, their roster and the stories and FanPosts that include them.

Ick!
I particularly like two things about comment titles. They can kick off a post nicely, with a summary, a joke, the start of a sentence, or something else to hook a reader in (or send one away). And second, they provide a visual break from what's otherwise a solid block of text. I'm pro-title.

the magic works
when you go to a YouTube video detail page like this one. then click the bookmarklet. it should grab you a thumbnail and pre-populate the embed code for you.
this same magic works if you go to the detail page of a photo on flickr like this one and then click the bookmarklet.
AND the same magic works if you find a new story, select the text of a quote and click the bookmarklet.

basic fanshot posting method
is to just click the bookmarklet, click the tab you want 'video' or 'image' and then either cut and paste in the video embed or the direct url to the image. we only know how to make thumbnails from youtube videos right now, so those will show up on the homepage looking like links.

I was just using it wrong. But it does take quite a while to load the page before I can press c. And it seems if I start to scroll any then I can't use c to find the new posts.

Different browser, different experience
For the first time since the redesign, I'm viewing New AN on a computer at the place where I work one day a week. The computer I use 99.9% of the time is a 13-inch MacBook running Safari. Here at the office I'm using a Dell 21-inch display with IE on Windows XP.
Three things seem different:
-- the font, while still somewhat difficult to read, is much bigger -- not just because the display is much bigger, but relative to the size of the screen;
-- the right-hand margin is still a huge expanse of wasted green space, but the left-hand margin is gone;
-- I stay signed in even after I've navigated away and closed and reopened the browser, instead of having to re-sign in every time I visit AN.
So it seems like New AN may be optimized for IE and a larger screen. Bad news for me, but possibly this explains why some of us are having a lot more problems than others.
Speed seems to be the same at home (cable modem) and at work (T1). I never had any problems with speed of old AN, though.
