For the record, this day was as close to being my dream come true as is possible without the A’s being in the playoffs. After watching the team I really do like (the Rays) jump all over the White Sox, and go up 2-0 in the series with their 6-2 win today, tonight’s game was not only awesome, but everything we’ve ever wanted in a playoff game.
And indeed, the late game had a little bit of everything, including a bunch of temper tantrums. After the Red Sox jumped out to an early lead, 5-1 (helped by 4 runs in the first off Santana, who did settle down, but not before another Bay homerun), the Angels chipped back in just about every inning as they entered the bottom of the eighth down 5-4, before handing Papelbon a blown save. Paps came in after a lead-off triple and retired three batters in less than ten pitches. But he allowed the run to come home, tying the game at 5, and giving hope to the Angles, who had fought long and hard to play on. Although Vlad, Teixeira and Hunter combined for eight hits, Howie Kendrick did nothing but add to his LOB total, bringing it to 11 in the series, as he has gone 0-9 and barely even touched the ball.
It seemed as if the Angels were just one big hit away from breaking open the game in every inning, but they could not (they recorded eleven hits, only one of them went for extra bases) and as the Battle of the Closers roared on in the 8th and 9th, K-rod (are we surprised?) was the one who failed to live up to his “Best. Closer. Ever.” moniker. In one of two sweet swings for A’s fans, Ortiz almost homered to open the ninth, settling instead for a double. After a temper tantrum by Aybar at second on a very close call on the runner getting back, J.D. Drew made it a moot point by absolutely BLASTING a homerun off K-rod to hand the Red Sox a 7-5 lead that Paps would hang onto in the ninth. Kendrick (surprise, surprise) made the last out on a weak swing for yet another K.
It was like Christmas and puppies all rolled up into one. That's now 11 straight loses to the Red Sox, and nine playoff games lost in a row.
So every series is at 2-0; both NL teams play tomorrow; both AL teams on Sunday.
FUN PLAYOFFS.

I can’t wait to read the carnage.

Eck's wearing a paisley tie.
But the colors are normal, so it’s not so bad.
whiteshoes40 - October 3, 2008
If he was really a hardcore A's fan
he’d be wearing a Baisley tie.
PaulThomas - October 4, 2008
A good percentage of Halos Heaven
is saying they NEVER liked K-Rod. I guess that WS outcome is long forgotten.
ohtobe21likehuston - October 3, 2008
90% of the I bet
Didnt even see that WS. All bandwagon fans.
Syphon - October 3, 2008
90% of THEM I bet*
Syphon - October 3, 2008
Tomorrow they will be turning in their gear for Dodger blue...
ohtobe21likehuston - October 3, 2008
as much as I'd love to see that happen...
it won’t. Allegiances are formed in your foolish youth. I mean, how many Oakland/East Bay residents are foolish 49er fans? Brainwashed.
FoolshGame22 - October 3, 2008
maybe in most places...
but it wouldn’t surprise me down here…
there would be a quick shift to UCLA jerseys if their football team was ranked 1st and SC wasn’t.
buddahead9 - October 3, 2008
I’m a proud East Bay Niner fan!!!
(for the record though, I grew up during the time of the LA Raiders….my parents raised me to dislike Stanfurd, USC, and Al Davis….)

Kotsay has to keep hitting the ball to Torii...
an inside the park HR to win game 3 would be sweet.

too bad he can't keep playing the Angels all post-season
FoolshGame22 - October 3, 2008
maybe he's all star-struck
with Kotsay’s skills in center?
buddahead9 - October 3, 2008
The temper tantrum was my favorite part.

Too bad the score doesn't read BOS 7, LAA 5
baseballnut020 - October 3, 2008
Yeah that’s why I took the 2nd one cuz it says the 2 run HR part. I guess I could kind of copy and paste the score onto this one lol

All I got to say is:
Suck it K-Hole……..you over-rated biatch!!!!!!!!!
Go A’s!
mrod - October 3, 2008
Delightful!
And Papelbon’s little celebration had to be a little extra salt in the wound.
Ray of Lite - October 3, 2008
Any extra salt in the wound of the Angels and K-Hole
is fine by me………….hate those Angel poser bastards!!!!!!
mrod - October 3, 2008
The bar I was at all cheered when the Angels lost
I was happy to say the least.
thesteve9x - October 3, 2008
can anyone string together a video
of all the Angels’ tantrums thrown this year?
(or throughout the years…)
They always bring a smile to my face.
buddahead9 - October 3, 2008
A great season after all!
mikeA - October 3, 2008
only 57 comments to Rev's post-game wrap...
kinda pathetic, in a way, when AN’s post-game wrap will end up with more post-game comments. Well, I’m really not that sad. I’m actually very chipper. I love it when the Angels lose.
FoolshGame22 - October 3, 2008
On another note..
loved the shot from the Ray’s game of ol’ Chad…

ST - October 3, 2008
ouch...looks like that hurts
OaklandSi - October 4, 2008
I heart Chad.
whiteshoes40 - October 4, 2008
Actually 10 consecutive playoff Ls
The last Angels win was Game One of the 2005 ALCS over the White Sox.
I have to say, overall, though, the number of brooms being broken out in the MLB playoffs of late is really getting kind of tiresome. it seems like every series is over before it starts. Occasionally I am happy about this when I particularly like or dislike one team… but mostly it’s a bad thing.
PaulThomas - October 3, 2008
I'm happy about all the teams that are winning now...
maybe I’d feel different about it if their opponents had won.
FoolshGame22 - October 3, 2008
Yeah, but
if things hold there could be no baseball from Monday through Wednesday. And then the series will resume with a bunch of sloppy, rusty teams.
PaulThomas - October 4, 2008
lol @ rev's meltdown
xbhaskarx - October 3, 2008
does my heart good...
to see him suffer.
FoolshGame22 - October 3, 2008
Someone should hand him a razor and help him get it over with.
Where’s Kevorkian when you need him?
Flashfire - October 4, 2008
This is positively Lucky-in-Waiting For Godot-esque
Might be the Rev’s finest literary hour.
Not that that’s saying much.
PaulThomas - October 4, 2008
The Rev's a good writer
when he wants to be.
FreeSeatUpgrade - October 4, 2008
Okay, that's kind of sad.
Just a little bit.
whiteshoes40 - October 4, 2008
no, it isn't sad
I’m not sad for him at all. It’s schadenfreude for all of his taunting of our own playoff woes over the years, for the constant “Chokeland” heckling, for his “Fremont” taunts when his friggin team plays in a nasty burb and NOT Los Angeles.
I love his angst, his pathetic and unmanly crie du coeur for one of the most obnoxious teams in baseball history. I hope they get swept and we get more movie quotes from him – or perhaps something more Broadwayish, like Death of a Salesman…
Fuck ’im.
coffee roaster - October 4, 2008
Does anybody know what FAIL-Rod's record is in the postseason?
I would like to assume it’s 0-and-something
likeiwouldtellyou - October 4, 2008
He's 0-3 in his last 9 postseason appearances...
5-3 overall.
baseballnut020 - October 4, 2008
He's also given up runs in six of his last nine appearances...
Including all four times he’s faced the Red Sux.
In his last 12 innings spanning nine appearances K-Fraud has given up 11 hits, 7 BB, and 3 HRs.
His last postseason appearance before tonight’s EPIC FAIL was when he served up Manny’s walk-off three-run bomb in Boston in Game 2 of last year’s ALDS.
baseballnut020 - October 4, 2008
Best. Closer. Ever.
drmmerchk - October 4, 2008
Overused
Who, I say, who could have guessed that blowing away the save record for the year could impact a closer’s effectiveness?
MobiusKlein - October 4, 2008
I missed this in the comments if someone said it
But did anyone else notice how K-Rod initially pointed up at the sky like it was a routine fly ball? Freaking awesome.
Tyler Bleszinski - October 4, 2008
Just saw that on the replay
too funny (unlike TBS)
doctorK - October 4, 2008
hahahaha at k-rod. i watched and its great to see his ego take a blow. He needs it. reaaaaality check big guy! I hate those Angels. except Big Tex!
With that said..uggggggh how I hate the red sox! Leeeeeeeeet’s gooooooo RAYS!!!!!!! it’s 7:30 am and I have been awake for over 3 hours after going to bed at 2am. I need to entertain myself here until work in..1/2 hr :(
ilovegregsmith - October 4, 2008
people at work today
person A: Dodger blue?
person B: yep
person A: what was the score?
person B: who knows, they lost….
person A: and they lost the day before too…
buddahead9 - October 4, 2008
Is "Paps" an official term for Papelbon?
Because the two things that enter my mind when I hear that are “Pap smear” and “Grandpa”.
Anyway..
Is anyone else super excited about the Cubs game tomorrow? I plan on calling my Cubs fan friends and merely repeating the word “100”.
VORP is too nerdy - October 4, 2008
"Christmas and Puppies"...?
Perhaps if the team administering this beatdown were wearing green and gold, there would be cause for celebration…the fact remains that the team we at AN seem to be “rooting for” is very nearly as despicable as the Slegna…I hate both of these corporations (oh, sorry, TEAMS), but I hope BOS wins because BOS/TB makes for the most interesting ALCS matchup.
Has anyone forgotten Derek Lowe grabbing his n**sack to taunt us after striking out those useless hacks Melheuse and T-Long LOOKING to end our season?
Down with BOS, down with NYY, down with any and every LA team in every sport. Forever.
kitoko - October 4, 2008
Wouldn't that be better reason to root against the Dodgers?
Derek doesn’t live in Boston no mo’.
Nico - October 4, 2008
nothing could be finer
than to see K-Rod give up the game
OaklandSi - October 4, 2008
and for the record, I HATE the Sux
but first things first: I’m content to see the Angels humiliated, then I want the Sux to be destroyed in the ALCS.
OaklandSi - October 4, 2008
+1000
batgirl - October 4, 2008
I can watch this over and over and over again
EPIC FAIL
green star oakland - October 4, 2008
I know you guys are going to hate me for this
But I WANT the Slegna to win the next two games.
Then, I want the 5th game to be longer than that Braves/Astros game a few years ago (18 innings), with a Boston victory at the end.
Makes the Sux more likely to get the floor mopped with them in the ALCS. And, injuries to the Sox players are always fun.
Blicks - October 4, 2008
Nope. Can't go along with you on this one.
I want the Angels utterly humiliated and destroyed. I want them to enter the off season despondent, dejected, with a sense of overbearing foreboding and doom. The best team in baseball, swept out of the first round two years in a row…..by the same team!
Justice will not be denied! I hope OJ is an Angels fan too.
alox - October 4, 2008
I want the Angels to be miserable.
A bad loss in massive extras just adds to gloom and doom.
Fine. How about the massive extras game be tomorrow, with the Fenway Park walk-off loss happening.
Or a walk-off walk.
Blicks - October 4, 2008
You underestimate the depth of my hatred
for the Angels. I wouldn’t mind a total blow out in Fenway on Sunday. Although a heartbreaking 9th inning loss would do nicely too. I want to see my A’s enemies eliminated is systematic and painful manner. I will be pulling for Tampa to destroy the RS in similar fashion. After that, I’m indifferent.
alox - October 4, 2008
I understand the rationale
but think the value of playoff humiliation for the Slegna can’t be underestimated.
And I never wish injuries on players…not even Sux players….
OaklandSi - October 4, 2008
When I said injury
I didn’t mean really getting hurt as much as I did just minor bumps that make some of the better players have to sit the ALCS, to make the destruction easy for the Rays.
As long as the Rays win the ALCS (or even the White Sox. I like AJ and Danks). everything is cool.
Blicks - October 4, 2008
mustn't anger the woofing gods, you know
OaklandSi - October 4, 2008
A's fans' wishes on injury front not coming true any time soom
Look how well our wishing has worked for us the last few years?
asfansince1989 - October 4, 2008
The ideal set of scenarios for Sunday's game
1) Angels load the bases with no outs in the first and line into a triple play
2) Boston makes Saunders throw 54 pitches in the 1st but only get 2 runs
3) Beckett hits Vlad Guererro in the left side of the knee so he limps uniformly
4) The Angels then proceed to load the bases again with no outs but Beckett strikes the next 3 out, all looking on 9 pitches
5) Two innings later Hunter is ruled out at 1st even though he’s safe by 10 feet and punches the umpire and is ejected
6) Aybar is safe at second but is ruled out, caught stealing resulting in Mike Scioscia being ejected after spitting in the face of the second base umpire
7) Angels tie the game up in the 7th but Jose Arredondo blows the lead and it ends tied at 4 going to the 8th.
8) Angels then take the lead with 3 runs in the 8th but Scot Shields comes in and hits two, walks 4 to tied the game up again going to the 9th
9) Angels take the lead again in the 9th by 3 runs again and K-Rod comes in
10) K-Rod gives up back to back to back home runs to tie the game, then gets two outs, then issues two walks. Then Pedroia gets rewarded with an infield hit to load the bases even though he’s clearly out by 3 steps. K-Rod cusses out the umpire at 1st but the umpire says, “I’m not ejecting you, you are staying here to finish the game”
K-Rod then throws a meatball and David Ortiz hits a grand Slam.
K-Rod proceeds to walk off the mound but is trampled to death by the Boston players as they celebrate at the plate. John Lackey comes to his aid but is beaten to death by the bat boy and the rest of the team.
Trainman - October 4, 2008
If exactly all this happens tomorrow, you're going to look really smart.
Nico - October 4, 2008
I'd settle for just the last one happening
FoolshGame22 - October 4, 2008
I think it's fairly safe to say
that I hate the Angels.
