Open Thread: Game 60 - A's at Gigantes

From afar it may look like a matchup of Jeremy Bonderman vs. Roy Oswalt, but in fact's it's Chad Gaudin vs. Tim Lincecum. Hopefully the A's will handle their first look at this Giants' phenom better than they handled their first look at Matt Cain--when Cain fired a one-hit shutout.

Speaking of one-hit shutouts, the A's offense is fresh off of one. The bad news is that once again their efforts to score will come sans Milton Bradley, who was placed on the 15-day DL today with a strained baby cow. The good news is that by the time the A's actually place someone on the 15-day DL, he is almost eligible to come back! Wheeeee! Like I'm waiting up for Milton Bradley.

Tonight's starting lineups:

Buck - LF
Ellis - 2B
Swisher - RF
Chavez - 3B
Johnson - 1B
Crosby - SS
Kotsay - CF
Kendall - C
Gaudin - P (I know, he should be batting 8th)

Winn - CF
Lewis - RF
Klesko - 1B
Bonds - LF
Durham - 2B
Molina - C
Feliz - 3B
Vizquel - SS
Lincecum - P

I'm about to find out

if the A's radio feed will sync with the Giants TV

My recollection is that it does
A's radio is no longer delayed

At least, it wasn't when I took a radio to the Coliseum last week.  All delays are now on TV's part.  And yes, KICU did join the "delay club" a couple of weeks into the season.

But...I always have the radio sound synched to the TV picture :-)

Reverse
The good news is that by the time the A's actually place someone on the 15-day DL, he is almost eligible to come back!

For Milton Bradley, isn't it the other way around?

You mean when he comes back,
he's almost eligible to go on again?
Seems that way, doesn't it?
First!
YAY!!!!!!!

-Cindi.

Gaudin should be batting 7th...

not 8th.

Those bobbleheads need signs.

Glittery signs.

oh no jon miller
mr. agreeable
You must not have cable.

I have the game on 2 channels, but on Astound cabe...FSN and FSN Plus...Fosse and Kuiper crew.

mlb.tv died
i had several errors trying

to sign in.....and now it is perpetual commercial break

same thing as me
ahhh, 6:15 start for me, thats why
Sounds like you have it on KNBR
Hi Everybody!!

LET'S GO OAKLAND!!!

Watching LAA-STL

Chris Duncan may not be the worst outfielder ever, but he sure looks like it.  That's the ugliest routine play I've seen in a while.

c'mon MaEl!
The grass looks really green.
The grass is always greener on the other side of

the Bay, isn;t it?

very chemical solutions

A horticulture friend told me, it isn't dye but the field is heavily, heavily applied with fertilizer and other stuff.

"other stuff" scares me.
Random question:

Can someone explain the difference b/w ash & maple bats and why a batter would choose one over the other?

Is MLB.tv being bitchy to anyone else?
YES

seems like I'm constantly posting that question here, so I'm glad you asked first.

lincecum

looks really good tonight...im scared

1st inning
ya i know

just putting it out there that he looked good for one inning.

oki

let's make some damage then

hee hee

eat me, SF.

There's your GIDP
6 Pitch Inning for Chadan
Damn!

Six pitches!

LETS GO A'S!!

Put the whup on these god damn brie eaters!

Out of Town Scoreboard update

4-3 Cardinals in the top of the 7th... No outs, Angels have men on 2nd and 3rd with Kotchman up. So the Cards look like they are the new Orioles.

7-1 Rangers...

1-0 Seattle in the top of the 2nd, 1st and 2nd with 1 out and Buatista up.

5-4 Angels
Damnit A's! We can't be no hit again!
offense looks lost
11 Innings, 1 Hit...
come on

give me some runs!

I'm calling it

13 innings, 1.5 hours long.

But can you predict the unpredictable?
I know Guadin should be batting 8th
Wow!

13 pitches for Gaudin thru 2!

i love jon millers

voice

nirvana to my ears

Did anyone else see that Giant/A girl/guy

couple in the stands ("action36") and think that was Green and Gold girl and date?

Do GnGG's parents

let her go out on dates now?  Last year it sounded like they were pretty strict.

nah, too old
a hit!
see if Gaud can bunt
I can't watch.
ugh

Stay with it!

yay the no hitter is over
For shame.

Kotsay bunting in an attempt to break up a no-hitter.

Michael Urban will tell the Giants to hit him
I hate pitchers batting.

Monkey. Football.

We're the same person.

I hate you.

I hate me too.
That was hilarious!

Whoever is co-squawking with Jon Miller (Kruk, or Kuip? Who knows) just before that hit, in praising Feliz' play at 3rd on Kotsay's bunt, said, "That's the type of play you see in no-hitters."  He jinxed his own team!!

Watching pitchers hit is so dumb.
Heh heh...

Nice eye Chad...

Gaudin: nice patience.
does he get credit

for laying off pitches over his head?

Even our pitchers are patient!

We rock!

Here's Travis

Bounce 'em up and down, Jennifer.

Excuse me?
it wasn't funny and I'm really sorry

I remembered how you gushed you wanted to have Travis's baby a while ago.

Very bad taste, I apologize, Jennifer.

LOL

I just wanted to make sure that's what you meant. :) No big deal, I'm not freaking out. Blez is going to make you watch the sexual harassment video during the 7th inning stretch, though.

(BTW, most of that stuff about Buck is just me kidding around. I have to do something since Huston and Rich are on the DL.)

No worries... let's just not make it a habit. :)

Applause for you!

very gratious and saving!

** whew ** thank you, still sorry

That really was unlike me and I've been feeling awful for an hour.  I just came back--thanks for the response.

Way to work the walk, Chad!
Wasn't Bengie the catcher during the sulk-off?
That was Jose Molina...
yay 2 runs
WaaahH!! YEah!!

What is this strange hitting with RISP concept?!?

SWEET!

Wear out this man-child!

T Buck!

That non-stride front foot tap batting style is HAWT.

Holy Travis!!!
nice piece of hitting there mr. buck!
Our rook is better than your rook!!!

WTG, Travis!!!

Hehehe.

Now hit one out of the park, Swish!

Wow...

Swisher actually did screw himself into the ground...

watch out man
Lincecum looks like he's twelve-years old.
What are you doin' swinging at that, Chavvy?!?
shouldn't you be

boycotting this series?

Of course not...

Baseball is baseball.  Try as they Selig might, he can't ruin it.

But interleague play does make me unusually grumpy.

Unless the A's win...

...in which case you're just usually grumpy. ;)

That was kinda the implication ;-)
Chavvy jersey @ Target, $29.99.
lincecum

is he human?

Why do they need a catcher, Tim likes the

backstop

Ball's really carrying today...

...so to speak...

Man, I bet the ump's getting nervous

If Molina can't get his glove up in time there ain't no way blue's dodging a mask-high hardball.

I wonder if an ump...

...has ever charged the mound because he thought he was getting thrown at.

I have heard stories,

don't remember exactly who and when, about catchers deliberately missing fastballs to nail the ump.

It happened with the Marlins

against the Cubs more than 10 years ago, I think.

damn... i wish that would have fell
Michael Milken...

Junk Bonds Crook. Perfect spokesperson for a Giants game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael...

Hey, I'm as hard on greedhead swine as anyone

But by most accounts Milken has made a genuine change and is devoting his life to good causes, like this prostate cancer prevention program he's pitching on every MLB team's broadcasts this year.

Well

he has prostate cancer, so I don't know if that's altruism talking.

Two hits since this guy's been in the booth.

Get him out.

Michael Milken!

In the TV booth.

Mr. Bonds meet Mr. Junk Bonds.

Booo!

We aren't going to get any help from the

Cardinals

Let's hope that's no longer true

When TLR comes back to town later this month.

it hurts to say this, but the Angels are looking

pretty damn good this year.  hopefully the wheels will fall off in time for our August surge.

I just noticed that Korach isn't on A's radio

Who's that with Cotroneo?  Bitker?

Korach was off yesterday,

today and also I think tomorrow.  They mentioned it in yesterday's broadcast but didn't say why...sounded as though it was planned ahead of time, though.

It allowed for the always amusing treat of hearing Fosse do play by play for a few innings.

I remember reading that Korach

was in Las Vegas for something.

But it wasn't till just now that I noticed his voice missing. (And I didn't listen to yesterday's day game).

He's presenting someone

by that person's request, as the intro man, for (insert name here) into the Nevada Sports HoFame.

Tonight, Friday night.

WTF

Chad and Tim seem to have some sort of gentleman's agreement.

Geezzz...

C'mon Chad. GITP!

Damn Karma

Gaudin embarrassed Lincecum by not strking out now he gets payback.

Oh well.

Son of a biscuit
mmmmm....biscuits and mustard!
Great message, Michael...

but, you're jinxing us.  Get him off, now!!!

this game has a frustrating feeling
Big out. Come on Chad..
Do NOT walk him.
Go-Dan!!!

one more out and we're out of this mess

I don't know about you...

...but I actually liked Lincecum in Ferris Bueller's Day Off...

Oh Crap

It's him...

shee-it!

That guy that Hank Aaron doesn't know his name is up. F-er!

correction

Hank Aaron said he doesn't know how to spell that guy's name.  hehe

Gaudin

seems to be reverting to last year's pitcher.  He better get some command, or this will be a long game..

shit

is this the old Gaudin??

Chad is baaaaaad

(meaning good)

Woooooo!

Ha ha ha ha ha!

Way to go Chad!

<Gak. Glorp. Phrmeg.>
Breathe.
You had the rubber glove exam!!

That Milken was recommending.  Way to go!!

that was scary

to say the least

Hee hee

Bonds ground-out with the bases loaded.  Good stuff.

damn, breathing now
YEAH!

And the bonus of shutting Milken's trap as well!

It was worth the tension...

...to see Ol' Cream 'n' Clear ground out with the bases loaded.

Dontcha hate the way they automatically show a shot of McCovey Cove whenever he comes up?

seems like someone

less interested in hitting homers might have taken a pitch or two from a guy who can't find the plate

37 pitches through 3 for Gaudin...

...12 in the first two, 25 in the third.  So it all averages out.... :P

Deep breath.

Memo to Chad Gaudin:

There are many easier ways to get the third out of an inning than loading the bases to face Barry Bonds.

Here are some of them:

  1.  Walk up to the batter and chew his leg off, then underhand the ball over the plate for three strikes while the batter writhes in pain and astonishment.
  1.  Bribe someone outside the stadium to send up a giant balloon umpire; then point and say "Hey!  What's that?" as the balloon goes up.  Hopefully the umpires will be so distracted that they'll call a punchout.
  1.  Pitch to ANYONE ELSE.
A fan on TV

with an A's jersey on - and on the back it said "Your Team Sucks" in 9 inch letters.

Gotta love it.

Gaudin goes yard

I'm callin it.

this game has that feeling
What I meant, of course,

was "Gaudin mows yard," tomorrow morning at home before the game.

And I'm calling Kendall's.

Sometime this century.

Can Bengie see?????
Apparently not above his shoulders.

Which raises the question of where his eyes are located.

In the back of his head

that's why he's so good at picking up the ball off the wall.

who knows where

i can find out on the internet if i will seen the Giants-A's game tomorrow on fox.

i live in portland oregon/

Here you go...

...and yes you will:

http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story...

Surprisingly...

Oklahoma gets Mets-Tigers not Astros-White Sox.

Guess it's proxy server time for me!

Ooh, me too!

In Seattle.

I'm going to be busy all day Saturday, but I can tape it and watch later that night or Sunday morning.

thank you

your awesome

Here

http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story...

Save that link. It's harder than hell to find on the Fox site.

An easy trivia question...

"Can you name the first Giant to hit a home-run off the A's in interleague play?"

Easy answer (until about a minute ago):  No.

Easy answer (now):  Yes (since they just told me it was J.T. Snow)

Travis hit ball far.
travis buck

is a beast.

Why was that kid wearing a life jacket?
He's a Giant's fan ready to jump ship.
When I hear that Giants outfielder mentioned

I always think his name is Randy Nguyen.

thank you, dear ump
cardinals suck

9-5 Angels.

will they ever lose.

Wait, Angels are playing Cardinals??

I thought they were supposed to play the Dodgers whenever we play the Giants.

1-2 to swish

lets go

get this run in!

Swish does his job.

Way to go!

Ellis should still be at 1st

And would be vs. 29 out of the 30 left fielders in the majors.

Are things kinda slow around here...

...tonight?

(shifts in chair, scratches)
That was a great commercial.
It really was

"With all due respect to the fat lady...it ain't over until the last Athletic swings."  - Ha.

Only thing that could have made it better was also including Buck's 5/02 HR off Papelbon.

Someone's up past his bedtime

Bye-bye "Franchise"!

made me laugh
Misspelled interleague

as "interleauge"

When did Lou Seal fall into a vat of Tang?

That is one ugly mascot.

What the hell is it supposed to be?
When did Lou Seal become all orange?

Something's just wrong about that...

I thought it was my television.

Really green grass, really orange seal.

He apparently has been playing...

...in that "other stuff."

That thing is a seal?

Guess I'm easily fooled.

Look up.

He fell into a vat of Tang.

I'd qualify Tang...

...as "other stuff."

don't the Geriatrics have something called...

"Orange Friday?"  Maybe Lou dons the pumpkin colors on Friday, as well?

He used to be partly gray

Looks like a rat w/o a tail.
And the gender ambivalence

is reminiscent of SNL's "Pat," right down to the one-size-fits-all name.

AN Sweatshirt sighting!

And a HLY TLDO license plate. Who's the masked ANer?

Correction: HLY 2LDO

:)

RLY?

No, not RLY...

...HLY.

It's back!

Where are the other three horsemen of the apocalypse?

Sorry we're late...

Milton, Harden & I got lost.

richie sexson

hitting .200, passes Kendall

Wow.
Swish's hair cut is awful.
to counteract

his chick magnetism?

Not really. He was standing

5 feet from me yesterday while signing autographs for the kiddies.  Fine looking boy!

right

but what would have happened to you had he been sporting a proper 'do

yes...yes...YES...

Oh.  Sorry, I meant that's my private business.

What's Larry Davis doing in the stands?
dyed orange, with shades and a Giants jersey?
No...but _that_ would explain a lot!
Ha ha ha

I was about to say "Same thing as he does in the clubhouse -- absolutely nothing?".

Ah!

Saving the senior citizen from a working life of misery at WalMart.

Barry would be...

...the world's worst greeter!

Right about that.

I meant the lil ol guy getting the out of play balls.  Is he still called a 'ball boy>'

Man, Charlie Manuel sure had it right

Bonds is thinking nothing but HR every time up.

Come on Chad.
Oh boy...

Chad, Chad, Chad...stop this silliness...

Where's that GIDP requisition form?
AN sweatshirt on camera again

Waving a flag!

Memo to Chad Gaudin:

Oh wait, it's the same as the previous memo, except without the Barry Bonds factor, and with one out instead of two.

Way to pitch into...

...and out of a jam, Chad.

whew

what a sloppy inning. time to start our kick-ass bullpen!

Nice going, Gaudin!

zero runs in after loading the bases with one out!

that turned out better than expected
Kill the Messenger.
Go Travis!
that boy is 3-3
uh, 3 for 4, but still

looks like a "Hittin' Machine!" tonight!

oh, sorry!

Been in and out.

Buck Buck Buck

BuckAAWW

We have one starter who looks like he smokes pot

and four who smoke mirrors.  Truly magical.  Kind of dragonany.

Who's the stoner?
By virtue of all the hair

I'm gonna have to guess Gaudin.

It's medical marijuana,

prescribed by Dr. Larry Davis.

That's why his delivery is so smooooth.
'dragonany'?
Good change.

Klesko battled Gaudin very well last time.

bobby c.

seems to be falling in love with that little backhand play...

Jay F Marshall
There goes my theory.
Damnit

I blame Chad's chin tribble.

Left handed specialist...

that worked out well.

so much for the relief pitching

Couldn't be much worse.

gah---rhone
I was so enjoying the...

McCovey Chronicles game thread before Jay Marshall came in to pitch.

God fucking damnit Marshall

ALL you have to do is get Lefties out...

NOT THROW MEATBALLS DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE PLATE!

I'd rather have left Gaudin in... or brought in Flores...

Jay Marshall is not Duke or HS.

fu jfm

i really miss last year's bullpen
Well that didn't work.

I'm too tired for extra frames tonight.

Let's get out of this inning and score in the eighth!

I don't think Geren made any
mistakes in this inning; I do think Marshall made two, though.
And there should be more than 3 runs on the board

for the A's

Eh.

The Gigantes should have at least 4 more runs right now.

So, call it 5-5?

Same effect.

Why mommy?

Why do the A's make my brain 'splod?

woohoo geren

You found the 1 pitcher bonds can hit lately. Who wanted Gaudin to get the win anyways? Hopefully someone gets injured soon so this is a complete game. Thanks again

wins don't mean anything, anyway...

it the peripherals that count.  ;-)

okay

I'll keep that in mind after we lose this game.

Add insult to injury!

Fat ass steals a base!  F'it!!!

and it's fat ass by more than a nose.
Wow. Another wasted outing by a starter...

I just feel for Gaudin right now but it's time to worry about just getting a "W."

yea.

Another game we should win blown. With just about any other bullpen in the league, our starters all have like 7+ wins. We need to win the games like this, if we don't we may as well crown the Angels champions already.

More proof that Ken Doll...

...has the worst arm of any every day catcher in the bigs.

As much as Kendall annoys me...

...the Bonds SB was entirely on Casilla.  It's the second time that he has COMPLETELY forgotten about baserunners.

Was on pitcher

really

That was definitely on the pitcher Bonds was

starting his slide when Kendall caught the ball

Marshall

Where's Rincon when you need him?

Rich ORLYa
nice -- someone needs to morph the baby

onto his mug

what a nightmare!
Mark F Kotsay!
Awful inning...

...but it's still only a tie.

Let's win this thing now!

Thank goodness Kotsay's back. That is at least

the 4th play I've seen him make that would not have happened with him on the DL.  Hopefully his stick comes around a bit.

A Repeat Molestation Avoided!

Nothing will beat Buhner/Bloomquist

Does that make Buhner

Lucky Pierre?

Marshall sucks

Geren's got to go to somebody (anybody) else.

to be fair... he has been a good LOOGY
just not THAT particular time.  I still agree that we need to find a better option but they're all on the DL.
I'll say it again...

...you have to give a pitcher more than a 2 run margin. The opportunities were there to add to the 3 runs, but the offense stinks. Scoring 1 to 4 runs game after game will not work over a full season. Look for a trade for a bat...and forget Bradley and probably Piazza, too.

Why couldn't they keep Benitez

Give us something to look forward to.

The pride of Anoka County!
The way he lumbered into second

it was more like Coon Slowpids, MN.

this is going to happen

injuries have decimated the bullpen. imagine if they were 100%...embree/calero (who i still think is injured) in the 7th, duke in the 8th, street in the 9th. i just hope they're all healthy in the second half of the season.

Things I Learned Today

They number the archways in rightfield at Not-PacBell Park.

DJ: thank you.
Mandatory- Get DJ in here!
DJ!

Head out of....

Agh!!

Johnson broke the wrong way!!

I can't believe DJ didn't score!!!!
WTF is Kotsay doing?

not waving Johnson in?

turns around looks at the ball...

and walks away?  Idiot!

DJ not scoring is tougher to take than
Marshall giving effort but not getting results.
Argh!

No help to DJ from Kotsay on that passed ball.  But given how many balls have come straight back of the backstop tonight it's not hard to understand.

It wasn't Kotsay's fault
on the passed ball. Johnson had a stupidly short lead and got no secondary lead, then broke back towards third before moving towards the plate. And then Kots wuz robbed.
DJ needs to be more alert though

and not casually jogging back towards the bag w/o seeing what happened

Agreed with you and Nico

but that still doesn't excuse Kotsay not giving DJ some kind of signal, which is pretty much SOP.  But you're correct, it might not have mattered.

jeebus DJ!
Less faith in Kotsay
Then in anyone.

Please prove me wrong, Mark.

at the plate but he saved us last inning.
Son of a ...

!!!!

you better feel like shit, DJ
Good thing DJ wasn't going on contact

at least.  And a bit surprising, with Kendall on deck.

Now would be a great time to pitch hit.
Damn!

Will Kendall hit?

It's okay, Kendall will save the day
He's a pitcher too?

cool

Just hit a fucking flyball

Mr. Nothing at the plate.

DJ's pissed off the woofing gods with that

It can't help.

Bad at bat...

...inexcusable lack of guidance to DJ on what should have been a passed ball.

Still, we'd be behind already were it not for Kots.

DJ was not looking at Kotsay, he was already

back at 3rd base.

jesus

what kind of fucking baseball instinct is that?

Are we watching the same game?
Kotsay ripped it and was just unlucky not to clear the drawn-in infield. And it's a stretch to blame the hitter for a runner's failure to score--by the time he gives a wave it's too late. To me, the passed ball is 100% on DJ.
Bad play all around, I'd say.
DJ was leaning the wrong direction.

But Kotsay needs to immediately wave him in.

Neither player reacted the right way.

But I agree: ultimately it was more DJ's fault.

Well, water under the bridge now!

A's win!

Imagine If This Club Could Hit W/ RISP

Hard to imagine what this club would do if there was anybody who could get a hit with a RISP.  Gee, great, let's let Kendall hit in this situation ... it's not like Shannon Stewart has a higher batting average or anything ... and you wouldn't want to hurt Kendall's feelings, which after all is what the game is all about.

Not watching

Was the passed ball an automatic score, but DJ just blew it?

He needed to take it right away.

If he had, then yes, but he hesitated and his first break was back toward 3rd.  At that point, he'd've been made if he tried for the plate.

No.

DJ could have scored if he was leaning the right way, but for a guy of his speed and with only one out, it was definitely the right call to stay at third.

Don't think that's the consensus view

Correct on the leaning, and he needed to break right away, but I'd bet that a good runner like, say, Kendall scores if he's in that situation

So we agree, right?

DJ was leaning that wrong way - that's his bad.  But even if, say, Kendall were leaning the wrong way, he still would have had a good chance to score anyway given superior speed.

I think that's why Kotsay

didn't wave him in as well

Boy we screwed the pooch on that one.
"The dangerous Jason Kendall at the plate."

Hah!

Miller: "The dangerous Jason Kendall"

Dangerous to the A's, that is.

bad time to PH?

Since pitcher is coming up next anyway.
Can't do a double switch, don't want to use full bench so fast?

i guess swisher

is going to have to win it like last year on a triple.

Announcer

Did I hear the announcer call him the "dangerous" Jason Kendall?

I laughed so hard I almost choked
he says it in MLB 2K7 too

i guess, but thats just a video game. lol

the oakland A's

masters at hitting the two-out sac fly

Word

Seldom with one out.

New thread mojo, please!
Gee, A Weak Fly to Right. Who Knew?

I'm an so f'ing sick of Kendall and his sucky ABs, but what I'm really sick of is the A's preferring his sensibilities to the effort to win.  What, exactly, does Kendall have to do to get lifted in that situation?  Does he have to hit .140?  .120?  Absolutely f'ing ridiculous.

COMING SOON...!
New thread mojo: When we go to the 9th...(Hopefully tied...)
You know, people are so blinded by what they want

to see, they sound like the A's should win every game.  There is never credit to another team or player.  That was a fly ball that would have scored a runner with less than 2 outs.

Huh?

I agree with the general knee-jerk blind criticism problem, but

  1.  I'm not convinced that would've scored a runner in a sac situation, wasn't that deep, and to a good armed OF; and
  1.  It wasn't a sac situation anyway, so why is that relevant?  It was a mediocre fly out to end the inning.
Yeah, why doesn't Geren

pinch-hit right there?

thats a brutal thing we just saw

geren needs to pinch run for dj in the first place...the DJ HAS to score on the pass ball...then Geren has to pinch hit for kendall...DAMMMMMMMMITTTTTTTTT!

Unless those are A's fans cheering for pop ups

Do Giants fans make noise for any ball hit into the air?

it sounds like they just never shut up
They were cheering for the discounted $12

beer now selling for $11.

just posted the same thing so I am not alone
Gotta like Casilla!
yeah

Have we finally found a bullpen guy who doesn't make us cringe or is it too soon to say? I hope he stays this good

mlb.tv is horrible tonight
DJ should have scored

But Geren should have called for the squeeze play. Kotsay hasn't found his swing yet, but he should still be capable of laying down a bunt.

And if he didn't everyone would say what a stupid

call the squeeze was.

NEW THREAD OPEN
SF fans go "nuts" on routine fly balls as if they

are going to be homeruns.  They are the worst at judging the ball of the bat.
