There is NO way the A's should have gotten out of the sixth inning, but somehow they did. Four double plays later (and NO, we didn't hit into them), the A's take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
To say we need some more runs is putting it mildly.
LET'S GO OAK-LAND!

Cust breaks out this inning
The woofing gods are with us, watch.
paradox - June 5, 2007
Good job by Lenny
Now let's hope the A's have 3 innings worth of bullpen left.
JediLeroy - June 5, 2007
I think he should go one more...
ohtobe21likehuston - June 5, 2007
Sure, he's better than the bullpen..
But he's not used to 100 pitches, is he?
JediLeroy - June 5, 2007
I think we got our answer on that one.
ohtobe21likehuston - June 5, 2007
This DiNardo guy
He's not too shabby.
Hit4TheCycle - June 5, 2007
Neither is Chavez ;)

Oh. Wow. Chavez is feeling it right now.

her new thread timing always feels right
LAXile - June 5, 2007
chavy is locked in right now
xbhaskarx - June 5, 2007
Gorgeous hit by Chavy
That was not a strike.
paradox - June 5, 2007
Interesting that he hit that one pretty well.
And the other 2 strike foul ball too, after hitting the two homers on pitches up.
But this strike zone is brutal.
hunter - June 5, 2007
gameday put it close to the center of the zone
LAXile - June 5, 2007
hmmmmmm
Didn't look like it.
paradox - June 5, 2007
gameday is bullshit -- so there's that
LAXile - June 5, 2007
YAAAY CHAVVY!!
I need to make a fun picture/logo thing for him now.
LETS GO OAKLAND!!!!!
drmmerchk - June 5, 2007
Bit Torrents for anyone interested...
If anyone is interested I just found these for those of you who are enjoying tonight's fantastic game. Gotta love the double play, especially when it's Boston grounding into them! First one is last night and the other is Zito at the Col. May 18.

Bobby really did hit that hard.

MLB.tv
Anyone currently watching on MLB.TV? I was earlier, and now I get nothing. All the other games work, but not the Oakland game. Is the feed down? It hasn't worked for about 40 minutes now for me.
rageon - June 5, 2007
its working for me
drmmerchk - June 5, 2007
though I guess I should add..
I've had it up all game. I don't know if it will stop working if I switch to a different game and try to switch back.
drmmerchk - June 5, 2007
MLB.tv
Now the 400k stream is working, but not the high quality. Better than nothing, I guess. Basically my summary on the entire MLB.tv experience -- it sucks, but it's better than nothing.
rageon - June 5, 2007
Ditto.
Slurve - June 5, 2007
Working for me now...
...though earlier (on my other computer) it was all delayed and herky-jerky.
I blame Bud Selig....personally.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 5, 2007
Our bullpen is like in Major League... "who are
these f-in' guys?"
ohtobe21likehuston - June 5, 2007
they said no one in bullpen lol they have used
them all
smasfan - June 5, 2007
I don't care if the strike zone is consistent
for both sides tonight. This shit is retarded.
hunter - June 5, 2007
but it doesn't even look consistent
Kotay's strike 3 was way outside
LAXile - June 5, 2007
Has seemed mostly consistent
except for that one inning when it tightened up inexplicably.
FreeSeatUpgrade - June 5, 2007
gameday
if you look on gameday a few of Dice-K's strikeouts tonight have been out of the zone on the gameday window. He must have some great movement because this happens alot (hes on one of my fantasy teams so I get a good look at his stuff on gameday).
apilgrim - June 5, 2007
Matsuzaka's at 113 through 6.
danmerqury - June 5, 2007
That pitch sure looked outside
especially compared to some of the calls Boston got that last 1/2 inning. What do you guys think?
Bleeding the Green and Gold - June 5, 2007
I agree
but like I said earlier I've been confused about the strike zone all game. I guess he likes calling the outside pitches for strike three on our guys, but other than that I can't follow.
drmmerchk - June 5, 2007
Even gameday
which I'm informed is BS, put the pitch off the plate outside.
CrunchyFrog83 - June 5, 2007

why not keep him in instead of going to calero?

drmmerchk - June 5, 2007

His head I mean.
alox - June 5, 2007
I suppose
it would be difficult to pitch at all if one was missing a head. So I'm going to say yes.
drmmerchk - June 5, 2007

I loved Calero last year
I'm just so scared he's going to not have an effective slider and blow games for us this year. It makes me sad. I really want him to get back to being dominant soon.
drmmerchk - June 5, 2007
I agree. Something has to be wrong with him.

Someone really needs to explain to our guys...
that the point of the game is not to see how many guys you can leave standing on the white squares in the field.
alox - June 5, 2007
We are so silly.
Why is it so hard to get a hit with a runner on 3rd? or a sac fly? or ANYTHING!?
drmmerchk - June 5, 2007

silly is the word.

Gee...what an inspiration.
Ice Cream - June 5, 2007
Maybe he just needs a full
day off, which is cool, but otherwise I thought that was a great time to pinch hit Shannon Stewart for Cust. With Cust, the results were kind of...predictable.Nico - June 5, 2007
Let Cust have two days off
sitting on the bench in Sacramento.
Scare some hits into him.
oaklandSMASH - June 5, 2007
Let's Go Oakland.
You can do it Embree.

alox - June 5, 2007
Dear Athletics,
We have been watching hard, and I think we have noticed something that might have slipped your attention:
You totally suck this year at hitting a ball in the air when you get three chances with a runner on first.
From now on, please try and refrain from lead off triples (Mr. Buck) as well as any other scenario which will strand a runner at third with nobody out.
It's just not working.
Thank you
broaklyn - June 5, 2007

THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win..
a ballgame. Pitching and Defense.
iloveoakland - June 5, 2007
Yeah, but....
if you were to tell me that one team struck out 10 and walked 3 while the other team walked 7 and struck out 2, I would never guess that the latter team actually won, which is what happened tonight. Still, I guess you can't argue with the 0 runs and 3 hits.

A's are on a mini-streak
but the Angels and Mariners continue to win. Can the Orioles and Twins put some wins together here?
oak1 - June 5, 2007
Seriously
I was (unfortunately?) at the Angels/Twins game yesterday cuz my family had tickets. My friend and I spent basically the whole time punching all-star ballots and keeping an eye on the A's score.
There is no way the Angels are as good as they were yesterday and I totally blame the Twins for leaving pitchers in too long for their complete meltdown (though I don't really know their bullpen situation, so I don't know if they were low on options anyway). We just had to laugh because it was so ridiculous. The Twins finally got some offense going in the 9th inning but they had no chance of winning after giving up 16 runs.
I can't see the Angels continuing this torrid streak for that long. I do think their pitching will keep them in the games, but as long as the A's keep winning, we should close the gap between us. My fingers are crossed, anyway.
Whew that was long.
drmmerchk - June 5, 2007
Nice to see we're not the only team...
..capable of hitting into multiple double plays in freaky and unconventional ways while squandering run scoring opportunities in similarly freaky and unconventional ways.

RECAP UP!!! :-)
Warning: contains props to Kendall.
baseballgirl - June 5, 2007
A's produce barely enough to win, but they win.
"To say we need some more runs is putting it mildly" or not.
But generally, the A's need more runs. Seven of today's nine batters are hitting below .265. DJ and Swisher are hitting .298 and .292.
