This is so much better than, say, A's-Angels Game 161 circa 2004. Dontcha think? Anyway, tonight not only do the regulars far outweigh the scrubs in the starting lineup, but all eyes are on Danny Haren to see if his final tuneup for the ALDS looks a bit more like his start in Minnesota and a bit less like...the rest of his recent efforts. It would be good for Danny's confidence, and great for your confidence, if Haren ended the regular season on a positive note.
Unlike...Detroit's Zach Miner, who didn't make it through the 1st inning in Kansas City's 7-run surprising uprising (it's currently 7-1 KC in the 3rd). With Minnesota losing to the White-AAASox, and the Tigers spotting KC a touchdown, it's still anybody's guess whom the A's will play on Tuesday.
Tonight the A's face lefty Joe Saunders, who tamed the A's over 7 solid innings (2 ER) in his only previous start against Oakland. Here's hoping the A's can score an actual run, something they last did on Wednesday. Today's "fun fact": Here's the 411 on the starting pitchers' ERAs...They're both 4.11.
The starting lineups show that you hit one inside-the-park HR and suddenly you're a clean-up hitter. ???

Figgins batting clean-up
reminds me of two early-80s A's games:- Billy Martin's famous "pick the batting order out of a hat" game. I remember that Jeff Newman batted leadoff.
- In the last weekend of the season in 1982, I think, Billy let Dwayne Murphy play shortstop (he'd been an infielder early in his minor-league career) and also let Rick Langford hit.
I'll see if I can find these games at Retrosheet and report back if I find anything.Nick - September 30, 2006
Okay, I found the KC game, Oct 3 1982
Murphy played SS, batted 2nd, went 0 for 4, and recorded 4 assists with no errors. Lopes started in CF (he played a lot of outfield after coming to the A's), then gave way to Langford, who went 0 for 1 but recorded a put-out after moving from CF to LF). Mike Norris pinch-ran for Tony Armas and scored a run. Tim Conroy started (and sucked, what a surprise), but was relieved by Dave Kingman, who threw 3 scoreless innings, (3 hits, a K, no walks) and got credit for the win. Dave Beard closed for the save, the A's winning 6-3.Nick - September 30, 2006
And here's the hat game, June 23 1982!
A's batting order- Jeff Newman, 3B
- Tony Armas, RF
- Dwayne Murphy, CF
- Cliff Johnson, 1B
- Jeff Boroughs, DH
- Dave Lopes, 2B
- Fred "Chicken" Stanley, SS
- Rickey Henderson, LF
- Mike Heath, C
Brian Kingman started and lost, 1-0, to A's-killer Larry Gura, on a 2-out single off Dave Beard by U.L. Washington to score Dennis Werth. Here is the hat game boxscore.
Here is the Murphy at SS game. A correction on that one -- obviously it was Brian Kingman who pitched that October game in KC, as well. Dave didn't join the A's until 1984. My apologies -- go ahead and call me a rat if you must.

My best guess:
They want to get Salmon as many ABs as possible, so they flip-flopped Figgins and Salmon because it would also be funny.Get Figgy with it!

I feel that unlike that last two games,
tonight's game does indeed "mean" something. Partly because of Haren's lousy outings of late (lousier, to be sure, than those of Z and E-Lo). And partly because of the shutout thing. And then there's the fact that JayPay said so in an interview. Not to mention the card stunt mojo. Let's put the hurt on the jag-holes in RED!LAXile - September 30, 2006

Well, well, well
No worries after all. We put the Rivercats on the field, we get shut out. We put the A's on the field, we score five runs on the first inning."In play, run-scoring play" are beautiful words to my eyes when the A's are at the bat. I thought, "Hmm, on Gameday, it looked right down the pipe... Swish could have gotten all of it..."
I bet the A's fans in Anaheim are enjoying this!
Chavinator - September 30, 2006
HATE
"run-scoring play". Gameday was so much better when there was the anticipation of the play unfolding. First, you saw just "put into play", then they showed what happened. Now the suspense is gone. :(OaklandNative - September 30, 2006
Oh, my nerves have thanked it deeply
on more than one occasion during close, late situations when the opposition is mounting a threat. "In play, out(s) recorded" is much better than waiting to see if it was a groundout or a HR.Chavinator - September 30, 2006

That was a GREAT AB by Swisher
Tons of off-speed pitches, then finally got a fastball that Saunders left a little too far out over the plate, and he crushed it.Now Saunders is limping around. I wonder if Scoscia regrets leaving him in in a meaningless game, especially with the news out of NY that Pedro needs shoulder surgery in addition to treatment for his leg injuries. I hope Saunders isn't seriously hurt.
Nick - September 30, 2006
Maybe the A's are sending a message
to Weaver the Younger and Saunders that they intend on making them their bitches next season. Let's hope so.alox - September 30, 2006
Saunders
He's consistently terrible when he doesn't get five days rest. If this persists into next season the entire league is going to make him their bitch.reni - September 30, 2006

Value of this game (I hope)
Realizing that Kirk Saarloos has no value on the playoff roster. We don't owe him that. He gets a very good salary already. If we're doing everything we can to win, he doesn't belong there.RLangford - September 30, 2006
I don't understand
why people have a beef with Saarloos. He's a serviceable ground-ball pitcher, the kind you want in the game in a DP situation.OaklandNative - September 30, 2006
Because he's not very good
Because a bunch of other pitchers are better than he is. Because I want the A's to win.RLangford - September 30, 2006
Because he is lousy
Batters are hitting over .300 against him and he walks as many batters as he strikes out. He is not good.dylantravis - September 30, 2006
Looking beyond this series...
Is anybody else not so comfortable with Zito as our #1 starter? I can't help but feel we'll be on the wrong side of the margin at the end of the contest. Maybe not 15-2 bad, but still, he doesn't fill me with the confidence I'd hope to get if say... Harden was #1.This probably stems from seeing him lit up at the Coliseum in all those day games where the curve ball didn't do it's thang.
louismg - September 30, 2006
Harden should be #1
But who the hell is going to have the guts to do that given that the guy has pitched so little.I don't care the order of guys. If it's Detroit, we should beat them. They haven't been very good for a long time. And we've been winning two out of every three since the break.
If we don't beat the Tigers, we deserve nothing.
Now if we draw the Twins, well can't blame anyone for losing to Santana in Minnesota.
