Open Thread: Game 119 - A's vs. Mariners (cont.)

A's up 10-2 with Witasick on.  I wanted to leave the initial thread open the rest of the season given the way the A's were hitting, but alas, a new thread was needed.

LET'S GO OAK-LAND!!!!!!!

I love the A's
Now pitching for the Astros:
Dave Borkowski.  Who?
player #42 in the game
that's simply nuts.

here are the players on the Cubs and Astros combined 25 man rosters who haven't played in this game yet. Give them time, though...

Astros -

Brandon Backe
Jason Hirsch
Roy Oswalt
Andy Pettitte

Cubs -

Ryan Dempster
Rich Hill
Carlos Marmol
Carlos Zambrano

I think those are the
8 remaining starting pitchers for both teams.  This game is grea, in a train wreck sort of way.
I don't think
Hirsch and Dempster are... As far as I know, Dempster is still the Cubs closer, i mean, guy that blows games in the 9th.

As for Hirsch, I'm not sure who he is. He looks like he might be the #5 starter for the Astros, but upon further research, he might be hurt.

You're right on Dempster.
I still forget he's a reliever now.  Remember when the Marlins had Beckett, Dempster, Penny, and Burnett?
wasn't that long ago
now they have a $14 million payroll and a 55-63 record, about 20 more wins than they should have with that kind of AA-AAA level talent. Not that I'm knocking their team, but most of those kids should stil be in the high minors. It's nothing short of remarkable that they are doing as well as they are. Joe Girardi should get NL Manager of the Year, and Jeffrey Loria should be run out of town on a rail.
Beinfest is a good GM,
given the circumstances.  He's assembled some very good young talent.  He ought to move Dontrelle for some shiny parts this winter, sign a free agent, and create a wild cart contender for next year.
I'd agree with that.
It makes the most sense for their franchise, long run. Of course, that's assuming that Loria wants Beinfest to think long term, and not just, "make money now, but look like we're running at a loss, so we can move out of Florida".
Wait a second.
Dusty is saving his closer in 14 inning game?
ah, that Dusty
what a kook...

<Cubs fans cheer as they go to Wrigley and slit their wrists...>

Zambrano pinch hitting now.
I wonder if he'll come in to pitch now.
#43...
wow. I wonder if there's been a game in which both teams exhausted their 25 man rosters? We may see one tonight yet.. only 7 more to go.
Here comes Dempster
Number 44; given that he's a "reliever," I can't imagine him going more than two.  Dusty may have to dip into his starting pitching reserves again.
Someone needs to call Selig
and get him to declare this game a draw.
well...
What the hell is he doing there?
Is Bud throwing a gang sign?
Fo'-three 4 life!
No way.
The Cubs have drawn two walks in 14 innings, how is that not interesting?
Ichiro has stopped trying.
he's just trying to fit in
It's tough being an exchange student
if he tried too hard
the cool kids would probably make fun of him.
Maybe he should start smoking.
it worked for vlade divac
vlade
doesn't want to kill you!

new thread mojo
oh wait, nevermind. sorry.

</collects mojo now spread about thread, puts it back in mojo lockbox>

Witasick's ERA
just dropped by over 1.
time to see
melhuse, kielty and d'angelo.

rest.

"Have you been injured in an automobile
accident?  Then call the legal team of Kielty, Melhuse, and d'Angelo.  We may not have an extensive track record, but you can be sure we're not exhausted from too much work."
Ya know...
...the more I see Witasick, the more I keep thinking that he's "Jim Mecir v2.0" (at least in the sense that he's good when we're up or down big but sucks when the game is even remotely close...)
Okay, A's fans, explain this...
After tonight's loss, Aaron Harang is 12-8 with a 3.82 e.r.a.  WTF?
He clearly couldn't
handle our big market media pressure.
National League hitters
It's called the NL
and a decent offense, to get those wins.
Fun with Closed Captioning
We had the TV on mute. After the last hit by the M's, FSBA read... "That's the 10th Hit for the May Have Nurse."

Oy. The Seattle May Have Nurse.

they May Need a Nurse
after this game...
Let's not forget Scoot.....
a nice double, a few runs batted in....just another day at the office.  I think one day he'll be appreciated enough to call it his office, not Crosby's office.  The only thing Crosby has now is Hope.
i really don't want crosby to come back.
I don't either...
until he's healthy enough to not reinjure himself within a week.
JJ Putz.
This guy is good.
Can't you just see
Putz going 2 inning tonight, and then the Mariners have the lead in the 9th tomorrow and either Putz blows it from being used tonight or some other reliever gives it up?
Unless Sea Ties or Takes a lead
This is going to be 1 inn, Max.
Putz
With a name like that, he'd better be. Where's D'Amato? (Eating Smuckers'?)
Astros
Love extra innings.
Aperez ...almost out of the park
At this point I just want the game to end
me too
i bet they are so bored they are doing the wave lol
Make 'um Pay, Jay
for that ugly pitch
WGN
Anyone see Ken Harrelson sitting in the crowd wearing a WHite Sox jersey?
Take that!
Throw at Jay's hands, he gets on base for a 5th time!
Jason Kendall
will break Cal Ripken's streak with all those starts...
yea
he just has to play out the rest of this season, then not miss a game until he's about 46...
each time
payton gets a hit he gets us closer from draft picks
I like the way you think.
Melly's turn.
Now, we just need Kielty to play some short.
gameday says there was an injury delay --
what's that all about?
putz had an awkward delivery
and they came out to check him...he continued.
they were
checking something with putz, but he's ok. he's pitching.
Putz felt funny, but the M's pitching
coach came out and cleared him.

Given that JJ is only in the game to "get some work in," why are they letting him throw so many pitches?

<shrugs>
So freakin' stupid...
I have him on my fantasy team... and Huston (hedging my  bet on the games, i guess). Stupid Hargrove, why put him in for busy work. Its ridiculous. ugggh.
oh man...
2006 Mariners: You make me sad.

</python>

congrats to scutaro. career high 4 rbi's tonight
This is the game that never ends...
...yes it goes on and on, my friends!
Are you talking about
the A's/M's or the Cubs/Astros?
It's more appropriate for the Cubs/Astros game,
but I was referring to this one.
Yes! Another run towards the differential!
One more and we might be good enough to make the playoffs!
25 pitches for Putz :-)
Calero should get a save.
wow, what an offbalance swing
Game over, bitches!
Ichiro is the last out again!
It's over.
finally.
A's win!!!
go for the sweep tomorrow and a texas win.

LET'S GO OAKLAND!!!

ha ha
itchy-row was the last out last night too
Wow.
Ichiro totally mailed it in on his last two PAs.
nice K
A's win a ... non-close game.

14 in a row over the M's. ouch for the boys from Seattle...

That ump just took it in the sack.
I am NOT
going to make a joke about the M's trainer having to check another putz.

Not. Doing. It.

woo hoo
celebrate come on
Bash Brothers A's
had some serious owning of the Yankees.

Must've been cool to see...

Such a contrast

from yesterday.  Almost a guaranteed win tonight, compared to last nights surprises
anyone up for an open thread
on the Astros-Cubs monstrosity?
Let's just hijack this one.
I'm lovin' the game.
sounds good
to the bottom of the 15th!
Kotsay being interviewed...
They should ask him
if he offered to pitch the 9th!
14th
in a row
Astros get the leadoff man on board
and a bunt moves him to 2nd
I'm not a bunt fan, but this was a great time for a bunt. Especially considering that both teams are COMPLETELY out of batters now.
Bottom 15
Neither team has any one left on the bench. They're going to play this one until the rosters expand.
Updated Benches
Cubs:

Carlos Marmol
Rich Hill

Astros:

Brandon Backe
Roy Oswalt
Andy Pettitte
Jason Hirsch

All of them are starting pitchers

Dbacks-Rockies also in extras...
1-1, bottom 13
they've used a combined 35 players
9 less than Astros-Cubs
runners on 1st and second, one out
I guess it doesn't have to be the 9th for dempster to blow a game?
If he loses, I bet his
teammates will buy him a beer.
yea, as a going away gift
Rockies-DBacks
trying to catch the Astros-Cubs, they're going to the 14th inning
Cedeno
That was almost really stupid
Screen grab for posterity
Apparently I had the good fortune to catch the SF Chronicle website before they fully updated it.

OK, the A's won, but what does that have to do with the Dell battery recall?

What would happen if..
With all position players used, if the last pitcher was ejected or injured?  Would they be able to play with 8 players?
that's an excellent question
I don't know for certain.

I think so, though.

what about the DH?
put the DH on defense and move another position player in as the pitcher.

Or is that a situation for a forfeit?

It would be a forfeit
According to rule 4.17

A game shall be forfeited to the opposing team when a team is unable or refuses to place nine players on the field.

i'm predicting a cubs win
after seeing that aside from chris burke, the current astros lineup has four hits.
you seem to forget
we're talking about the 2006 Cubs... and Ryan Dempster is still in the game. I have friends who are Cubs fans, trust me, there's a reason they go into a rage induced stupor when "Dumpster" enters the game...
true, but
six runs is the astros' quota for the entire week.
The movable object is meeting the
resistable force.
true
so, considering all of the above...

I'm looking forward to a 27 inning game.

Home Team should Win
Unless it's the A's on the road.
what's funny
is that in about 12 hours, the Astros and Cubs play again. After being on the road for a week and a half...

If at least half of the clubhouse isn't on greenies tomorrow, I'd be shocked.

They're nerds up there
yea
but I like those marinerds. they're pretty clever. and friendly, too. More than I can say for you know who down in la-la land.
let's all go to the 17th...
hooray!
I like bizarre games.
It's what makes baseball worth watching!
475 pitches in the game so far...
And Dusty hasn't lifted his starter yet!

[yea, lame joke, I know... but there really have been 475+ pitches now.]

Extra Innings games
can make people sleeeeepy.

Or a Pirates regular season game.

Carlos Marmol warming up
that'll make him the 45th player in the game, and 24th for the Cubs. Only Rich Hill, tomorrow's starter, has yet to play for the Cubs tonight.
They put in a pitcher!
Huh?
he's a better hitter than dempster
and will pitch the bottom of the inning
Up to 24
for the Cubs!
Colorado-Arizona goes to the 15th
sorry
I jumped the gun. It's still the bottom of the 14th there.
wow
never mind...

Marmol isn't going to pitch. Rich Hill is. Dusty just used his LAST PLAYER ON THE ROSTER, after he blew through #24 as a pinch hitter... weird.

I don't get that at all.
Cubs blogs should be an  interesting read tomorrow.
Now pitching....
Rich Hill (so who starts tomorrow?)
Kerry Wood's dismembered arm
It's like that hand from the Addams family...
Cubs have used everybody.
Rich Hill is now pitching.  The game is his to win or lose.
Batting practice?
Is Hill in there to throw the game?
Figured it out
Dusty is tired of the controversy, is getting himself fired immediately....
leadoff double
Aramis Ramirez
this game is simply outstanding
i can't wait to see how the cubs manage to not score after this 1st and 3rd with 0 outs
one down,,,
pop out
2 down
none score so far
Who's more tired
Mabry (who was old when he was wearing Green), or Ausmus....
the home plate umpire
Good point
How in hell could he call a ball at this point?
CUBS SCORE
holy crap.

two run lead.

that might as well be 1000, with the Astros

The Astro's don't even swing.
They'll trade this one for some sleep, and they have a pitcher for tomorrow
good point
they have been playing for tomorrow for at least 2 innings
So....
How do you think the Astros will score there two runs?
ok, c'mon Astros
score 2. I want to see twenty innings here.
This call to the bull pen is sponsored by
... Uhhh, no Dusty, no one here but us mice.
The Rockies are in the 16th now
perhaps they will make it to the 20th inning
We can always hope...
nice graphic on FSN
last time the Cubs used all 25? April 20, 1986.
2 down...
drumroll...
Thud!
That will lower hill's era below 7 and 1/4
cubs win, cubs win
</caray>

As for me, it's on to the Arizona-Colorado game. It's in the 16th inning now.

Well, that sucked.
as do most Astros-Cubs games
I saw two of them earlier this year in Wrigley, with my buddy Joel, a Cubs fan. The Cubs lost both, and they were pretty boring games...
Time to switch
to the other game
bottom of the 16th...
this shows promise.
The force is strong with tihs one...
I can feel it.  20 is a possibility.
Stro's left 16 on base
good thing MLB.tv exists...
These extra's games are the only ones I watch beside the A's.
i've got MLB EI
so i watch games PIP on my tv. Actually, I watch about 5-6 games a day like that.

Yes, I do have a life. And a job. And I go to school. I just really like baseball.

Stop looking at me like that.

up to 39 players
in the Col-Ari game
The pitcher is trying to end it right here.
Awesome
What are the MLB rules on game curfews?
they can suspend it
but it's usually at 3 in the morning or so
Yay!
Go Byrnesy!
bottom 17
this is fun
Haha
I love the cheering for the team going into the bottom of the 17th.
this is, by time, the longest game in Rockies hist
cool
Boy,
the announcers are giving him credit for "trying."  They're gettin desperate.
Back in .... 74?
A's and White Sox went 21, and it was either 2-1 or 1-0 (I can't even remember who won....)
well...
we've tied the cubs game now. 18 innings.
Byrnes
Looks like a skid row bum... drunken dissolute face, with his shirt open
Byrnes with the run!
Aww
Don't this one end so soon too.
Let's go Rockies!!
Push one across!
tying run aboard
no outs

ok rockies, just get one here.

Byrnes
What did we get for him, again?
For that matter
I like Gameboy (Milton Bradley), but Andre Ethier's hot for the Dodgers....
that's it
darn.

well, we got two 18 inning games today, that's rare.
