Hang on to your hats, folks, because you're about to see a lineup without Chavez, or Crosby, or Ellis. A lineup in which Jay Payton, sub-.300 OBP and all, hits in the #3-hole, while Scutaro hits 7th and actually looks like he belongs there. It has come to this.
Welcome to the big league club, Mike Rouse, and by the way we need you to start. And if you have a two-hit game, you'll pass our third-baseman's season total. Gak.
So without further ad-eewww, here they are, ladies and gentlemen, your 2006 World Series contending Oakland Athletics!!!

Scutaro (SS)
Perez (3B)

How the HELL does one come up with THAT!
EVEN if you are using pretty much all bottom of the order guys, the lineup SHOULD Be:Kendall

not quite as impressive as
tinkers to evers to chance...good day to focus on the front of the jersey as opposed to the back.(because if you study the back you will probably get hit by a foul ball...what with all the research, bookwork, etc.)tresselfan - June 9, 2006

Easy money right here. I wish I did at times like this.oakfan97 - June 9, 2006
Already posted this, but it bears repeating
As soon as I saw the lineup, I went to bet alot of money on the Yanks and the books aren't even taking bets on it anymore. That lineup is pretty classic.Tony - June 9, 2006

No reason why not
It's a crazy world when grover's become one of the optimists around here. It is a crappy lineup, but Haren was lights-out in his last start against the Yankees, and the top of the order could still provide some runs. So let's hold off on the "Game Over" posts, at least until it actually starts.andeux - June 9, 2006

That is strange. I guess they felt that tackling the subject matter alone was provocative enough, the didn't need hot husband-on-multiple-wives action too.Since Casa Monkeyball is a cable-free environment, we have to catch up via DVD. Slavering over getting s2 of Rescue Me.

So, I'm like 3 hrs too late
But I just got into the FX shows...both Rescue Me and The Shield are awesome. RM has just the right mix of humor and pathos and Shield is just plain intense. Pretty much every episode has all the action that aton of people watch the Sopranos for...and then bitch about after, but that's a whole nother story.Tony - June 9, 2006

At least our DH is not batting .000
The hardest game I ever witnessed was a few weeks ago when I had to explain to Yankee fans in NY why our DH (Perez)was batting .000 (and no this was not his first start). The Yankee fans gave me quite a time about that. None of our 6,7,8,and 9 batters had a batting average over .200 at that time. They were outright laughing.Someday our team will be healthy--right?
Thomas Walker - June 9, 2006
Let them laugh
The A's won that game remember? (I was there, too.)SportySpice @ Athletics Nation - June 9, 2006
Yes, and almost the day before also
Only Wang kept us out of the game on Friday night. Otherwise the (depleted)team had to make you proud.Wasn't it amazing how quiet that bat day crowd was as the left the park after the A's won. I almost felt bad for all the kids with bats who expected the Yanks to win until the last out.
Thomas Walker - June 9, 2006
Bottom of the order hitting .406
As of the top of the third if you add up the averages of our last three and divide by three you get .406 How can this lineup lose?William Legume - June 9, 2006
oooh, that's u-g-l-y
Payton and Kielty had better frikkin' step up tonight, because the cupboard is totally bare in the bottom third of the order. These two combined are almost automatic outs and it's going to be a long night if they're up to their usual 0-2 swing-miss tricks.coffee roaster - June 9, 2006
i at least expect some
spectacular popups and foul outs.ak_A - June 9, 2006
"those two"?
I count six near-automatic outs in our lineup: everyone except Kendall (good career # vs Johnson), Thomas, and Swisher.monkeyball - June 9, 2006
true...
But the two automatic outs I'm so chafed about are batting third and fifth. I doubt that if you scratch around MLB tonight you'll find anything dreckier in the 3/5 hole than what Macha is throwing out there tonight.Although since, as you noted, almost everyone else is an automatic out as well...god, it's gonna be a long night.

KendallGurl18 - June 9, 2006
It's annoying
Macha bascially threw away the series playing all these stiffs since Saarloos is going to get beat down tomorrow. At least play Kotsay and see if Chavez can take off tomm.
oakfan97 - June 9, 2006
and we have a winnah!
monkeyball - June 9, 2006
Who is health that you know of that is not in the
lineup. Chavvy's skin is falling off all his bones, and Johnson is pitching. Kotsay may be the only one, but like was said earlier, play the right handers. Macha has not many options.theblackpearl - June 9, 2006
<sshhhh!>
(I was speaking from the sarchasm.)monkeyball - June 9, 2006
I don't know how you can blame Macha
and say he throwing a game away. Kotsay and Chavey must not be able to play or they would be in the lineup given the number of injuries the team is dealing with.3up3dn - June 9, 2006
It's okay
so long as Chavez is not able to play because he is hurt and needs this day off and not a case of Macha just deciding I'm going to give him a day off because he could use one and make it against the LHP.There are at most 4 players in this lineup that are major league starters. That's horrible.

I pretty much knew that Rouse, SCutaro, and Perez would be in, but I didn't think about the lineup....maybe we're going to go with the ol' "make them think we suck and then surprise them with our bats" plan....I hope it works...My guess is that Kotsay was a scratch - that's why Payton is in the three hole.
gigglingone - June 9, 2006

I like it
no really, I like it.I agree with playing lots of subs at one time, how many times in the last few years have I seen the Giants win on Sunday using a AAAA lineup?
If you are going to do that, might as well do it with RH bats against Randy. There's a certain "nobody expects us to win" edge that guys sometimes get.
And I also like playing the rookie in his first game up, no time to think about it, just react.

... in the same way that Billy Beane wrote Moneyball ...monkeyball - June 9, 2006
the usual exaggeration and distortion
Gore said something to the effect that he was instrumental in creating the legislation that led to the Internet -- which is basically true, since in the 1980s he chaired some House subcommittee on science projects, and the Defense Department program that developed the ARPA Net was one of the projects Gore actively pushed for as chairman. Some journalist "summarized" the line to say Gore claimed responsibility for making the Internet possible, and from then on every time it got repeated it got distorted a little more. Eventually, opponents made a joke out of it, saying he claimed to have created the Internet.iglew - June 9, 2006

Cause you'd probably hear SEEEEE YA on that home run.Hit4TheCycle - June 9, 2006
Actually
The announcer was talking about how Thomas hits the pitch up and out over the plate very well, just as Johnson left one out there, and Thomas killed it. He kept talking for a few seconds and then stopped abruptly and they watched it fly over the fence. It was like he got shocked by it.hunter - June 9, 2006
I don't like Perez's stance AT ALL
With his legs so wide apart, it seems like he'd have to concentrate too much of his below-the-waist energy on just not falling over... and then he can't stride or even shift his weight much when he swings.Poppy - June 9, 2006
