Open Thread: Game 61 - A's at New York

Hang on to your hats, folks, because you're about to see a lineup without Chavez, or Crosby, or Ellis. A lineup in which Jay Payton, sub-.300 OBP and all, hits in the #3-hole, while Scutaro hits 7th and actually looks like he belongs there. It has come to this.

Welcome to the big league club, Mike Rouse, and by the way we need you to start. And if you have a two-hit game, you'll pass our third-baseman's season total. Gak.

So without further ad-eewww, here they are, ladies and gentlemen, your 2006 World Series contending Oakland Athletics!!!

Kendall
Swisher
Payton
Thomas
Kielty
Bradley
Scutaro (SS)
Perez (3B)
Rouse (2B)

Damon
Jeter
Giambi
Rodriguez
Posada
Cano
Williams
Cairo
Cabrera

Oh my...
That lineup is...well, it is what it is.
That is the worst lineup I have seen in 3 years
I missed the Rouse call up. When was this?
today
Keisler sent down to make room.
you kidding me?
this is the worst lineup since 1998

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teamstats/roster.php?y=1998&t=OAK

Bring back Art Howe! God knows this team needs a miracle.

Holy. Crap.
If I don't keep laughing hysterically, I might start crying. So keep the laughing gas coming...
That lineup is...wow...
Where's Kotsay?
Is it April 1st?
You're kidding, right?
How the HELL does one come up with THAT!
EVEN if you are using pretty much all bottom of the order guys, the lineup SHOULD Be:

Kendall
Swisher
Payton
Thomas
Kielty
Bradley
Scutaro (SS)
Perez (3B)
Rouse (2B)

C1 Kendall
RF Bradley
LF Swisher
DH Thomas
1B Johnson
CF Payton
2B Scutaro
SS Rouse
3B Perez

Shuffling deck chairs, homey.
on the Hindenberg
We're soaring!
DJ against a LHP?
I have no problem with Kielty getting the start.
At least Johnson is hitting the ball as of late
the same can not be said of Kielty or Payton, and at least Payton can play defense.
not quite as impressive as
tinkers to evers to chance...good day to focus on the front of the jersey as opposed to the back.(because if you study the back you will probably get hit by a foul ball...what with all the research, bookwork, etc.)
For those that dabble in wagering..
Easy money right here. I wish I did at times like this.
Already posted this, but it bears repeating
As soon as I saw the lineup, I went to bet alot of money on the Yanks and the books aren't even taking bets on it anymore. That lineup is pretty classic.
BEARS?!? Where?
Instead of watching mlbtv
i will be cowering under the bed.
Going out of a limb
Oakland puts up 4 runs against Big Unit and pull out the win.
Baseball's weird like that, could happen
Or we lose by 38.
You'll end up saving $500
Lesson plan from the days of old. Load up with RH bats, no matter how feeble they may seem. I've seen junk line-ups follow that pattern and beat Unit in his prime.
sawing on limb now, and standing
on outside of limb.
It could happen.
Will happen
You've been Mr. Glass-half-full today.
is that Crosby half-full, or Harden half-full?
Nah
Not using a glass today. It doesn't matter if the bottle's half full or half empty, you'll still end up shnickered.
<shnickers>
<... in grover's knickers>
Hah!
I'm not wearing any knickers!
No reason why not
It's a crazy world when grover's become one of the optimists around here. It is a crappy lineup, but Haren was lights-out in his last start against the Yankees, and the top of the order could still provide some runs. So let's hold off on the "Game Over" posts, at least until it actually starts.
Hey, I haven't changed
It's everyone else that's spiralling into the pit of despair.
game over, man!
<Bill Paxton>
Who's now moved on to polygamy
That's what I call game on!
not that there's anything wrong with that ...
Have you seen the series?
Yeah, a few episodes
Surprisingly PG. Really, what's the point HBO?
Huh.
That is strange. I guess they felt that tackling the subject matter alone was provocative enough, the didn't need hot husband-on-multiple-wives action too.

Since Casa Monkeyball is a cable-free environment, we have to catch up via DVD. Slavering over getting s2 of Rescue Me.

Never got into Rescue Me
Kept forgetting when it was on to be honest. From what I saw, save your banana peels and skip Bill's series.
RM isn't the best, but it's fun
For my money, The Shield is the best show on tv.
Me likey the Shield
Although TiVo kept cutting off the very end because of FX's desire to mess with the start time.

For me though, the best show on TV is... <gulp> Battlestar Galactica. It's about the only show I make time for.

interesting
Haven't seen it. Another friend recommended it as well.

Michael Chiklis = mid-period Oliver Reed

1st off... who you calling friend? :)
Secondly, not sure what you mean by "mid-period" Oliver Reed.
'70s
Ken Russell-films Oliver Reed.
OK
He's dead.
I recently purchased S2 of RM...
haven't started it. I'm still watching S3 of Scrubs.
I "accidentally" saw s3 #1 of RM
Great stuff.
Beats seeing the #1 #2
I meant to record s3...
so I could catch up after I finished s2... that didn't happen. A lady I work with has been giving me updates. Ep. 3 (could be 4) is great, she says.
So, I'm like 3 hrs too late
But I just got into the FX shows...both Rescue Me and The Shield are awesome. RM has just the right mix of humor and pathos and Shield is just plain intense. Pretty much every episode has all the action that  aton of people watch the Sopranos for...and then bitch about after, but that's a whole nother story.
Has Frank
ever had a 4 home run game?
haHA
3 to go!

You're welcome everybody!

I think Macha decided
they had no chance of winning and gave everyone the day off.

<hysterical laughter>

That lineup's bad enough on its own...
but then looking at the Yankees lineup right after it and realizing that's who we're facing? With Randy Johnson pitching?

...Man. It's gonna be one heck of a game.

I can just hear the h8ers....
Maybe I'll stay away from the game thread today.
Is it too early to cry?
Are you kidding?
This is the A's. It's never too early to cry.
fuck it.
let's start the goddamn swearing before the shitty game even starts.
<straps on earmuffs and helmet>
or
<pause>

We find out that Kotsay broke his back on the flight to New York.

I am
beginning to feel sick
If you have any money
bet on New York tonight.
<banshee scream>
bANnsHEed!
not me!
surely not me.
stop calling me, Shirley
no
i refuse to.
O M G
this is the ugliest lineup ever.
Poor Haren.
Danny should bat!
a common post but it heck,
why not.
At least our DH is not batting .000
The hardest game I ever witnessed was a few weeks ago when I had to explain to Yankee fans in NY why our DH (Perez)was batting .000 (and no this was not his first start).  The Yankee fans gave me quite a time about that.  None of our 6,7,8,and 9 batters had a batting average over .200 at that time.  They were outright laughing.

Someday our team will be healthy--right?

Let them laugh
The A's won that game remember? (I was there, too.)
Yes, and almost the day before also
Only Wang kept us out of the game on Friday night.  Otherwise the (depleted)team had to make you proud.

Wasn't it amazing how quiet that bat day crowd was as the left the park after the A's won.  I almost felt bad for all the kids with bats who expected the Yanks to win until the last out.

Bottom of the order hitting .406
As of the top of the third if you add up the averages of our last three and divide by three you get .406   How can this lineup lose?
oooh, that's u-g-l-y
Payton and Kielty had better frikkin' step up tonight, because the cupboard is totally bare in the bottom third of the order.  These two combined are almost automatic outs and it's going to be a long night if they're up to their usual 0-2 swing-miss tricks.
i at least expect some
spectacular popups and foul outs.
"those two"?
I count six near-automatic outs in our lineup: everyone except Kendall (good career # vs Johnson), Thomas, and Swisher.
true...
But the two automatic outs I'm so chafed about are batting third and fifth.  I doubt that if you scratch around MLB tonight you'll find anything dreckier in the 3/5 hole than what Macha is throwing out there tonight.

Although since, as you noted, almost everyone else is an automatic out as well...god, it's gonna be a long night.

<offers talcum powder>
Macha hates Swisher.
Bring in the rook
Welcome to the bigs, now go grab a bat and step in against Randy Johnson in Yankee stadium. Good luck!
Wow.
Hoping for the best, because I am not sure whether laugh or cry. I really thought Nico was kidding when I saw the lineups.

Can I please borrow someone's spare helmet?

It's annoying
Macha bascially threw away the series playing all these stiffs since Saarloos is going to get beat down tomorrow.

At least play Kotsay and see if Chavez can take off tomm.

and we have a winnah!
Who is health that you know of that is not in the
lineup.  Chavvy's skin is falling off all his bones, and Johnson is pitching.  Kotsay may be the only one, but like was said earlier, play the right handers.  Macha has not many options.
<sshhhh!>
(I was speaking from the sarchasm.)
I don't know how you can blame Macha
and say he throwing a game away. Kotsay and Chavey must not be able to play or they would be in the lineup given the number of injuries the team is dealing with.
It's okay
so long as Chavez is not able to play because he is hurt and needs this day off and not a case of Macha just deciding I'm going to give him a day off because he could use one and make it against the LHP.

There are at most 4 players in this lineup that are major league starters. That's horrible.

I had heard
that the guys in the clubhouse were making out the lineup...I just assumed they meant the A's half of the clubhouse.
Nice
<golf clap>
how apropos
since I posted that from behind the counter in the golf shop...
great line
n/t
Woohoo! for Rouse!
He's going to kick ass.
I can feel it.
I hope he doesn't
hurt himself kicking ass.
if he runs onto the field ...
... will Saarloos save him in his cap?
wow
I pretty much knew that Rouse, SCutaro, and Perez would be in, but I didn't think about the lineup....maybe we're going to go with the ol' "make them think we suck and then surprise them with our bats" plan....I hope it works...

My guess is that Kotsay was a scratch - that's why Payton is in the three hole.

I'm not good at remembering
things I just heard on the radio, but I think RayFo just said Macha wanted a right lineup. Had to use Rouse because of the deaths of Chavy and Crosby.
As long as Kotsay's not hurt...
whew
I really need to start
taking notes.
here, take mine
Oh, maaaaan ...
... this is gonna be one KraZEe Link-Dump of a Game Thread, I can feel it ...
can we get a separate game thread
to just talk about the lineup?

Or is that what we're doing now....  ;)

lol!
I was thinking the same thing!
Ok...
I'm off to <gulp> watch the game. Don't kill anyone while I'm gone. Unless it's Macha.

Let's go Oakland... <clap clap clap--> Oh, heck with it. Let's just make it through the game without anyone losing a limb, mmmk?

<prosthetic tail falls off>
Aw, crap.
I like it
no really, I like it.

I agree with playing lots of subs at one time, how many times in the last few years have I seen the Giants win on Sunday using a AAAA lineup?

If you are going to do that, might as well do it with RH bats against Randy.  There's a certain "nobody expects us to win" edge that guys sometimes get.

And I also like playing the rookie in his first game up, no time to think about it, just react.

This lineup against the Yankees?
I have so many friends that root for the Yankees. They always make fun of our team...this takes the cake. I am going to have to listen to all of their razzing on Monday at work.  Grrrrrrrrr........
Hey... look at the bright side
Maybe they won't know who any of these guys are and will just forget to razzzzzzz??  I have a bet with a gal from work and I need to bring her down to Chinatown.
We're gonna need a new thread.
we're gonna need a bigger boat
That was my inspiration...
I thought Chicago was
I'd have caught the referrence
the first time if you had said something along the lines of "here's to posting with bow legged women".
<scrapes nails across game thread>
<knocking over everyone to escape thread>
I think it's great ...
that if Mike Rouse goes 1 for 4, he'll be in the upper half of this lineup in batting average.

I think that's why Macha did it ... to get him a chance to get his confidence up.

over 100 posts
and the game hasn't started yet... my oh my
surprised...
no one's talking bout the weather/ busting out racist dance accompanied by tribal noise...

weather.com says its raining in NY right now, and the radar is/isn't looking good, depending on what camp you're in...

band camp!
bANnEd Camp!
The lineup is ban-daid-ed together
<dips lineup in Betadine>
Beta-version of the real lineup
Okay... I'm going to stop now.
So many Yankee injuries...
I hope they scraped enough players together to make a lineup. Poor guys. :( They are barely surviving.
Jeter
They have their captain playing tonite....
inspiring start
not.

3 up, 3 down.  i think i am going to leave work and go home.  at least i have beer there...

Holy Shit!
You mean the game's started?
<grover pulls knickers back on>
Hah!
I'm still not wearing any knickers! Naked posting day, doo-dah doo-dah!
Payton almost beat that!
Nice hustle! Let's go Danny Boy!
I thought ESPN keeps saying the yankees are
banged up.  There top 7 players are all starters.
I predict that Randy Johnson
is going to throw a perfect game or a no-hitter.  If I bet a dollar on that in vegas, would i become a millionaire?
You'd be a millionare
if you bet a dollar that David Wells will lose 30 pounds by the end of this season.
No more
Yankees this season for the A's after this series?
yes
i believe that is the case.  but we still have 3 series with boston and 2 with the chisox.
Fox Saturday Midwest
Does anyone in the MW know what game is being show tomorrow?  Please tell me it's not the Cardinals AGAIN.  I hate them.
It's not the A's game.
Crap
I was holding out hope but realizing it was about as desperate as K-Mach's lineup tonight.  Thx
Link
I don't get the A's game, anyway. I think you might.

http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/5619630

FYI- The announcers for the A's/Yankees game on FOX tomorrow: Joe Buck, Tim McCarver, Ken Rosenthal.

Good luck, folks.

I DO GET THE GAME :-)
Thanks a lot.  This is exciting since I don't get the game tonight because of Dish Network.
Is this the MOST beat up A's team in history?
Just wondering. This season has been sick. Maybe something to do with global warming? Curse you Al Gore!
<Crosby struck by rogue glacier>
Google for Gore
At least Gore invented the internet (yeah right) and we are able to track our gimpy A's on a daily basis.  Thank him for that if it were true.
He didn't really claim that
Who did?
I don't really pay attention to much that he does.
Gore invented the Internet ...
... in the same way that Billy Beane wrote Moneyball ...
the usual exaggeration and distortion
Gore said something to the effect that he was instrumental in creating the legislation that led to the Internet -- which is basically true, since in the 1980s he chaired some House subcommittee on science projects, and the Defense Department program that developed the ARPA Net was one of the projects Gore actively pushed for as chairman.  Some journalist "summarized" the line to say Gore claimed responsibility for making the Internet possible, and from then on every time it got repeated it got distorted a little more. Eventually, opponents made a joke out of it, saying he claimed to have created the Internet.
what is
the diagnosis on Crosby?
DOA
Will notify team if his condition changes.
i am hitting the ice cream already
isn't that a CGV?
If it's not, can I hit McFood?
danny boy
fights back.  took a few more pitches but he sent the yanks down 1-2-3.
"deep" center field
Oh thee with game visuals, just how "deep" were the Jeter and Giambi FOs?
Not Very
No warning track
kul. tnx.
The only thing worries me about Haren tonight is his homeritis.
Not as deep as Frank Thomas' fly ...
not-out!
I've been asleep for three hours
I left work early and just came home & crashed... got up for the game... shuffled out to the living room, the Man and the Boy don't seem to be around...  I know where the Man is, so I called the Boy and said "Where are you?"

<pause>

"Are you serious?"

"Yeah, I just got up. Where are you?"

"Mom... our apartment's not that big."  And he walks out of his room.

So I turn on the TV in time to see them announcing our lineup.

I'm pretty sure I died sometime during my nap.

woo!
FT goes deep!
BOO YAH!
TAKE THAT YANKMEES!
The Big Hurt
gone.
Wooo!
Thomas HR!
WHy would you give Frank anything close
to the plate with this lineup
there is one
call me dum dum but frank has been ripping enough that i picked him up in my yahoo league.

3 more to go frank!

Wahoo!
Big Franky!  A few more of those for him and we might get this!
2d HR 4 FT vs. BU!
huh?
Took me a while to realize you weren't talking about Boston University....
BOOYA!
Frank!
yeaahhh!!!
big hurt...finally 1 hurt that I can deal with!
yes!!!
boy howdy, listening to the yankee announcers they express no excitement what so ever in that HR call....
booya!
Klown power!
Not as deep as BIG FRANK'S! Sweet!
Jeter's was easily tracked down by Payton, didn't see Giambi's. Darn those client's! Don't they know there's a ball game on my computer!
there's mf'in ballgames on the mf'in computer!
Frank Thomas!
One of the three non-automatic outs, as someone said earlier. Go Frank!

There's your lead, Dan. Go get 'em.

Isn't it kind of cool
to hear Bob Sheppard say, "Marco Scutaro"?
First pitch swinging
yuck.
three batters in a row
really?
that's terrible
How did Kielty get on base?
What is this jackass talking about
Questec for?

He just said that with the advent of the Questec system, Frank Thomas' numbers went down, as if he was dependent on having a small strike zone to put up good numbers. Please.

Sorry, I should clarify
I'm watching the YES network's broadcast. Announcers aren't that bad, but they aren't all that good, either.
he was talking about how umpires
respected him, and then with questec, they were being judged, and stopped.
Oh, I understand what he said.
I just thought it was typical of an announcer for the other team to immediately demean the guy that just turned a pitch into 400 ft. sawdust, in an effort to not cry softly in the press box.
UGLY PEREZ, UGLY
Maybe Perez will get a hit...
...if he smiled a little more.
Is there a YES feed?
Cause you'd probably hear SEEEEE YA on that home run.
Actually
The announcer was talking about how Thomas hits the pitch up and out over the plate very well, just as Johnson left one out there, and Thomas killed it. He kept talking for a few seconds and then stopped abruptly and they watched it fly over the fence. It was like he got shocked by it.
I don't like Perez's stance AT ALL
With his legs so wide apart, it seems like he'd have to concentrate too much of his below-the-waist energy on just not falling over... and then he can't stride or even shift his weight much when he swings.
<snerk>
"below-the-waist energy"
My goodness.....
Perez looks lost up there.
<straps GPS to Perez>
{faxes Perez a St. Bernard}
<puts Scutaro in the tiny beer barrel>
ah, the restorative powers of Venezuelan elf candy
Cleveland gets tired of somebody and sends
them down to AAA Buffalo, with the stipulation that he get delivered to the team by going over Niagara Falls in a barrel...
niiiiiiice!
Not as quick as driving up I-80, but more scenic!
Do they do that for the other team?
Or just the Yank Mes? Can't wait to see Mike Rouse hit. When will they send Perez down and call up Ginter?
do they do what?
It's very difficult to understand your posts sometimes when you don't use the "Reply to this" option....
You know...
THAT.

{winks}

Not good start for Rouse.
wha' happen?
</Fred Willard>
Ball fell out of his glove after he dove for it.
he dove for a liner
stopped it, but couldn't hold onto it, so no out made... wasn't really a bad play.
YES announcers claimed
that he didn't hustle enough and gave up on it, and that he didn't know who was running/didn't have enough time to read the scouting reports. Nice one, gentlemen.
Got to love
the New York Media, the Best.
yeah
I'm sure a guy who is getting a shot at the big leagues is "sand-bagging" on the play.  That makes a lot of sense.  JERKS!
Pitch 2: Strikes out swinging
Nice job Haren, a strikeout and with the minimum number of pitches...
strikes out on pitch 2?
Wow, Haren is AMAZING!
puts ice cream away
next....Calif. Pizza Kitchen frozen pizza..bbq chicken or Thai chicken? (health food friday night)
<puts McFood away>
Pitching Help... please?
Do we have anyone at AA or AAA, that brings the gas (93+ mph) that we can audition with the big club?

Saarloos over the long haul (the duration of Harden's injury) doesn't get me excited about our chances. Especially when the Angels can bring someone up like little weaver, and colon about to return...

I meant before do they say SEEYA for away teams?
You can probaby put it on the board
YES network.
How did Haren get out of that?
ground out to 1b for the second out
moved runners up to 2nd and 3rd. Miguel Cairo flew out to RF after going to 3-0.
holy crap...
I just noticed there are 244 new comments in the DLD.
see what happens when you go to sleep?
nonsequitur
sleeping = eyes closed
You aren't missing much.
I missed having to scroll sideways
I hate that.
Crabcakes always scrolls sideways
by not having cable...
...you miss being able to see "Sideways" nineteen times a day.
<lays head on desk 19 times>
Don't need cable for that!
WAY to GO!
PEREZ... take notes
Yeah Rouse!
You have as many hits as Perez!

Woo Hoo!

Rouse singles
in his first MLB at bat
Mike Rouse!
what do the YES announcers have to say about that?
slacker
If Rouse had studied the scouting reports, he'd have homered.
One of them was busy
telling a story about how he fouled a ball off his foot in his first at bat. The single was an afterthought.
welcome to the show rouse!
Hooray for Rouse!
Battin' 1000, rookie!
man i love this game of baseball
happy guy!
Save that ball, Mike.
and after 2
36 pitches for Haren

21 pitches for Johnson

A's 1-0

I'll take it.

yay for Rouse!
If have no idea who the hell you are...
But nice hit, rookie.
C'mon Hit and run!!
being on the front end of a Kendall GIDP ...
... is the A's initiation rite for rookies.
GameChannel sez ...
"[undefined] singled to right"

Woo-hoo! Go [undefined]!

Darn Gamechannell
trying to divide by 0 again
Oh, God
Now they're trying to talk about Moneyball... y'know, don't bunt, don't steal, etc., and how the A's don't play Moneyball anymore.
Red Sox up 2-0 in the 2nd inning against
the Rangers
<sob>
Please don't talk about MaEl.
No Crosby until at least Sunday.
<cries>
VinCo is kRaZeE.
Anyone listening to the radio?

Vince was talking about Crosby. Crosby tried swinging the bat in the trainer's room. Vince said "Davis tried gerry... mandering Crosby's bat with extra padding. No baseball activities for Crosby today. He's hoping to play on Sunday."

lmao
Larry's making crazy shapes out of Bobby's bat?
<Crosby cruises to reelection>
lol
According to Vince. I think Ken slapped Vince shortly after he said it. :)

gerry...mander

Rouse looks like a mini-Chavy.
a Chavette?
Well, after another look...
...maybe the son of Scoot and Chavy.
<snerk>
"Son of Scoot"

Scoot vs the Swamp Thing? Bride of Scoot? Abbot and Costello Meet Scoot?

Mike's ass is already falling off?
lol
Are you watching the game?
Radio.
They showed the A's dugout a couple times.
Harden...<sobs>

He was smiling, though.

smiling, or smirking?
sort of SADLY smiling, actually
It's better than seeing him cry.
nice job Kendall... go get em
Swish!!!
Johnson seemed shaken up by Rouse!
Rouse looked ready to run. Is he fast? Does he ever steal bases?
I dont know if he was running
but it did seem like he was ROUSEing his suspicions.
Yay, Payton!
yes, but Boo, Swisher!
Oh, is that how you pronounce it?
yay!
Rouse scores!!  Go rookie!
HA hA!
Sup Bitches!

2-0!

What is going on in the Kendall at bat?
GameDay seems to be stuck?
try Yahoo GameChannel
GameDay never works for me. Might need to update your Flash.
Thanks,
Can't wait to get home from work and turn on MLB.tv

At least that never has any problems.

<ducks to avoid bolt of lightning>

Kendall BB on 9 pitches
Swisher GIDP 5-4-3
Payton singled to LF to score Rouse
Thomas flied out to just short of where he hit the HR.
Swish in New York...ick
WOOHOO Jay PAy
Big Frank up again
And Rouse scores!
Congrats, rookie!

(now can we replace him with a real big leaguer?)

Undefined] scores!
Inning over...for those with Net issues
Radio is behind Game day....
whatever... damn delay...
radio is ALWAYS behind
gameday.  I don't know why
There's a relay
satellites from the stadium to the sky, then another satellite back to the internet.

All takes about a 10 second delay...

this is the first time
I actually have a second to watch and listen at the same time....
Let's go Haren
Get another shutdown inning.
Beane Ball
in action.
Jeter does such fun dances when he gets HBP
Haren really IS modeling himself on Z
... with all these HBPs
Wow that was so inside!
Benefit of a bad call! Nice! Sit down, Jason!
There goes the Shutout
poor Haren.
damn...
at least Kendall got Jeter at third.

2-1 A's.

Ah, crap.
Well, we're out of the inning at least. No more HBPs, Danny!
If Macha has a short leash for Danny...
<gulp>
Was that Jay Pay who threw it on?
Nice outfield D! Way to go boys!
NEW THREAD OPEN
Wow.
Bobby Kielty.
#23 Home Run
and that's not Michael Jordan...
BOOYA!
KLOWN POWER!!!!!
Come on Scoot!
MENDELBOB!!!
THERE IS A NEW THREAD OPEN!

(just in case he shows up...)

SHARON!!!
;)
