He Who Laughs Last, Laughs Best

I think it's fair to say that tonight's game could not be mistaken for a regular season game. Exhibit A: The A's took a lead into the late innings, yet Kiko Calero, Justin Duchscherer, and Huston Street were all nowhere to be found. Exhibit B: Frank Thomas was the starting shortstop. Enough said.

However, be that as it may, tonight offered some pointed reminders of the pitfalls that can fell even the best teams on paper. (How do we know that the games aren't played on paper? If they were, tonight's game definitely would have been rained out.)

Reminder #1: Add on. A 4-run lead ain't what it used to be, even when Danny Haren looks sharp, Bonds isn't in the lineup, and the offense looks locked in at the outset. You can't stop scoring in baseball, because when you do you often look back and find you had one fewer than you needed.

Reminder #2: The A's have an excellent rotation and a deep set-up crew, but the back of the bullpen is about the same as everybody else's. Kennedy and Witasick trying to hold a lead? Good luck.

Reminder #3: If you play in the rain, someone's gonna get hurt. We held our breath, we held our breath, and we held our breath some more. And then just when we thought we were safe, Bobby Kielty was holding his hamstring after sliding safely into the warning track vaguely tracking a fly ball. Hopefully, he's ok.

Blanton, Harden, and Haren are all finishing strong. Tomorrow is the last tuneup for Esteban Loaiza, who has struggled in both appearances since rejoining the A's. He'll face Matt Cain, and hopefully he'll prove to be able.

HAHA
I am listening to the giants postgame show via the net because the A's feed didn't work tonight.
And, every caller is saying that the A's record will be better than the giants this year (much to the dismay of david bruce).  These are giants fans people!
ha.
I just hope it's not too dismal at the Coliseum
tomorrow...I'll be in the stands instead of nice and warm in my living room
Biblical referrences?
Ugh.

Make that double ugh.

why don't you lighten up! Jesus ;)
Just call me Judas
I'm so misunderstood.
Another clue why tonights game didn't matter
I turned off the TV and radio after the 6th inning. I don't think I've even voluntarily done that in the regular season. It's a long season, and I want to make sure I'm well rested for the long haul.

I wonder if Beane will be kicking himself for trading Bynum if Kielty is injured. My guess is no because Forst said in an interview with Baun that they were pretty sure what they were going to do with Freddy, but they were going to wait until the Sunday before they did anything. Either they pulled the trigger today because they got the deal they wanted or they were told "now or never."

I'm assuming from you're writeup that Witasick sucked again. I'm worried about that guy. Maybe the second coming of Juan (this time Dominguez -- and I hope the results are better) ends up getting a shot at the pen this year. Maybe Jairo/Santiago will too.

Don't judge him yet....
Last year Watasik was reliesed from this team after spring training becasue he did so poorly...then he was incredably solid for the rest of the year.  (Which included a stint in Colorado)  Watasik just doesn't do well in spring training games.  I would hold my judgement until at least May.
fade is right/witasick was great as an A last year
he was clutch and had the stats. 28.2 INnings, 33Ks, 3.25ERA
Catfish Stew blog had this take on the trade
he thought if you look at both A's recent trades together then the A's A's got two years younger with a lefty (Rhinecker for Halsey) and a righty (Cruz for Dominguez), with the price being Bynum (who they had to get rid of since they certainly weren't going to be able to trade Kielty, even if Beane were so inclined.

It certainly gives Beane
more chips to play with in July.
It's
the little things like these trades that make Beane the stud GM he is.  Even the Bradley / Perez trade for what projects to be a 4th OF at best...a starting OF and super backup for a AA OF lol.

And Loaiza needs to show me something today because he's looked like garbage so far...inning eater is all I see.

overdoing it?
I agree with the assessment on Beane, but Ethier isn't a 4th OF "at best". That's the expected maybe, but at best he's a starting left fielder somewhere.
we'll
just have to wait and see then
urban lists this as the opening day lineup
ellis
kotsay
crosby
chavez
thomas
bradley
johnson
kendall
swisher

from urban's A's Opening Day Outlook

I prefer Nico's
why?
Why?Why, why why why why, why?

Why Swisher hitting last? Why not Kendall as the second lead off man? Because of this whole L-R fetish? Hell, Swisher is a switch hitter...

Yeah, at least
switch Kendall and Swisher in that lineup. Remember, though, the Opening Day lineup will probably reflect expected level of success against Randy Johnson more than it will reflect the most common lineup.

Still, that one looks a bit lame to me.

Urban
I think "Opening Day" means beginning the season, not just who is going against Randy Johnson.

I agree on switching Kendall and Swisher, I love the line up otherwise though, hopefully Thomas can stay healthy and keep teams pitching to Chavez.

I'd rather see Payton than Johnson
against Randy Johnson.  Heck I would have liked it if Kielty was in rather than Kotsay as well.  The Unit is very tough on lefties.
The A's game is on TV in Sacramento today
on KMAX 31, of course it is the Giants feed, but it is TV none the less.
Used the Mute button
Put your TV on mute then turn on your radio to KSAC, the new radio home of the A'S in Sacramento. The game will be more enjoyable with Ken, Vin and Foss plus a one second delay for radio to TV.
If you're at the exhibition at the Col today...
..and you see a guy in a bright red cap with a big C on front, that's me.

Come say hi to the foreigner.
