must to steal allen's quote
"Their batters are patient to the point that it's annoying." -- Gil Meche
c'mon scooter, this is your 3rd chance.
it's all about the walks
just ask gil meche
Smart ball that, Ozzie.
Still think walks are overrated??
ah scooter, to repeat
"Their batters are patient to the point that it's annoying." -- Gil Meche
Awesome quote
hey beane haters
how's THAT for OBP?

also, i just got in. how's harden pitching? 2 runs in 5 innings?

0 ER
oh no!
bad defense?
DJ error gave the Sox a run in the first...
Forced Harden into a 36-pitch inning, but Rich has been solid since.
And he was also thrown a little bit
when he issued a 13-pitch leadoff walk.  These ChiSox have been having good ABs against him, but he's mostly gotten the better of them.
Didn't we trade Vizcaino
because of his inability to throw strikes?
Chicago's announcer
probably needs a new catch phrase now:  "He ON!  Put it on the board"
I know its getting greedy
but I wish that we got a base-hit somewhere in that walk-a-thon
Why did Kendall swing the bat?
Doesn't he know if he's patient the Sox will walk him?
Record for walks?
Does anyone happen to know the A's record for walks in a game(by the whole team)?
I can't believe
Scooter didn't make it to second :--(

He's slower than a palindrome!

-Cindi

I hate those things! Yech!!
They stink and all they do is eat peanuts!  Don't they know how much fat there is in peanuts?  Someone should tell them about cottage cheese!  Cindi, sorry about not inviting you to the sleepover tonite.  :(  My mom said I could only invite like, 2 people and I had to invite Marcia, my mom made me! :(
O Cindi hid Nico
Too hot to hoot.

Palindrome...

Impressive...
Um, ok,
that didn't even make me simile.

Go Hotties!!!!!!!!!

-Cindi

whatsapalindrome?
Go hang a salami!
I'm a lasagna hog!
does harden
have a 90 pitch limit or less?
he's over 90, nearly 100
harden at 100 pitches now
Anyone up in the pen?
calero, i believe
So,
Calero for the 7th, Duke for the 8th, and Street to close it out?
Great call
by Macha, IMO. 101 pitches is plenty and he was missing up in the zone to Konerko. Smart move.
FIRE MACHA NOW
oh, wait. good call, macha.
calero in
this is tough because you have to think the bullpen is going to get some work with saarloos tomorrow. then again, kirk could pull another gem out of the hat and it wouldn't surprise me.

100 pitches through 5 2/3 doesnt seem very efficient. then again, i didnt watch, so i dont know.

TONS of foul balls
and the 1st inning was extended due to an error
A lot of foul balls...
13 pitches to the first batter in the 1st.
Error by Dan Johnson extended the first.
39 pitches int he first. So, think 61 over 4 2/3
He got burned
by a 35 pitch first inning.
Pods drew a 13 or 14 pitch lead off walk.
though...
he was pounding the zone. 71/101 pitches were strikes.
that's great news
i was worried he was throwing a ton of balls and working a high pitch count
i hate carl everett
hate is a strong word and i restrain myself with that word, but carl is a jerk of the highest order.
he makes the all jerk team
along with the anti-Mr. Rogers, Lamar Barroids, and Piershitski. Albert Belle can manage. Anyone else remember when he threw a firecracker at a little kid?
"he" being belle
Oh yeah,
Bob and Tom had a commercial parody for a new sports drink.  Albert Belle here for A-Hole!!
what do you mean? what did I miss?
I agree...He hovers right over that plate...
...then acts indignant if you throw anything that comes within two inches of him. Ugh.
not just that
some of his comments in the past have been just ignorant and so uncalled for. he has very little pleasant things to say. i remember hating him so much when he was on the sox.
Nothing today...
Just Carl Everett in general over his career.
Oops...
That was meant as a respone to alamedaman.
from today's Chicago Tribune:
But they start a new month with some demons to overcome, opening a three-game series Friday at Oakland, the site of some of their worst struggles in the last five years.

That includes a three-game series in late April in which the Sox had an eight-game winning streak halted while losing two of three games, starting when staff ace Mark Buehrle twice failed to protect a three-run lead. Friday, the A's come in on a seven-game winning streak.

Since 2001, the Sox are 3-18 at McAfee Coliseum, including an 0-9 stretch.

"We never play well when we go there," Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said after the Sox improved to 5-0 at Comerica Park this season on Freddy Garcia's complete-game five-hitter.

"Hopefully it's in the past. When we went there we were playing well and lost a couple of games when everyone got hurt on the same day."

NOT IN THE PAST BABY  (I hope, not trying to speak too soon.)

YAY I'M HOME
Okay the game is on the game is still on. Does anyone know if any store still has the 4 dollar ticket pepsi cans? I went to about 6 stores and none of them had them anymore :(
Ok, dare I ask...
for any information on the Cindi/Nico multiple personality disorder? Or is this one of those no-questions-asked sort of thing...
Very much
a don't ask Do-tel policy.
booby k, i love you
great catch
Good inning for Calero!!
Wow
Coliseum crowd is roaring as if it's a September game against the Angels.
Nice inning by Calero
I love how the A's demonstrated their lovingly annoying patience in the 5th. A hit would have been a nice cherry on the top, but I'm not complaining.
Hmmm... 11 pitches
How about just Calero, Street today.  Save Duke for tomorrow.
11 pitches, 4 outs
Can we get Kiko to work with Barry on effeciency?
Hatteberg
Hatteberg must really annoy them. :)
Hattebattler
yuck
not really that many hits for the a's.
it's the runs what count...
this gushing
about contreras is ridiculous. his biggest problem has been his inconsistency and his lack of control. plus, he's OLD. he's not going to become one of the "best in the league" at this stage.
Nice solid hit!
It really feels like Johnson has been here forever. He does not seem like a rookie in any sense.
Dan Meyer
3IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 3SO
They're sure handling him gingerly.
I think this is his third outing since he's been back from the DL, and the first one he's started.

I'm all for it, though, as long as they have him healthy and effective and ready to prove himself next year.

Pitcher Change...
... fear of Swisher's HR potential.

So nice to see!

OK, I saw that!
So we're going to put an end to this total bogus nonsense:

"Hi, it's me, Cindi!!!"
"Hi it's Nico; thanks for filling in, Cind."
"Byeee for now!"
"Catch ya later, guys."

See? Now SOMEBODY feels stupid!

Awww...
But Cindi was teaching us about palindromes and stuff. Where are we going to find out about palindromes and how slow they are?

I miss Cindi already... :(

Go to the zoo!
Someone told me it's all happening there.
No sillies--
That was both of us, proving we are different people!

If Huston Street comes in to pitch in the 9th, I will just DIE!!!!!!!  : -- }

-Cindi

Cindi's still here!
Well, warm fuzzies all around!
Is anybody
watching the Chicago White Sox announcers feed of this game?

What a bunch of h0mers.

I couldn't handle it
Muted the mlb.tv and put the radio on the other computer.
yes!
cavvy catches a bunt from poo-nek... he gone
Nice play Chavy...
Catchin' the airborne bunt!
lol
they just showed the pen, huston was leaping up into the air a couple times... i guess that's how he warms up. nice...
they show this often
and everytime, Fosse gets a kick out of it.
huge by calero
now we have a rested duke for tomorrow!
Calero was sharp
now it's Street Time!!!
street is the only thing
associated with the longhorns that i don't despise. burnt orange makes me want to vomit. of course, i'm a born and bred husker fan...
Ahhhh, that was nice...
lying in bed, watching the boys take teh lead on some absolutely terrible pitching by the Sox (and unbelievable patience by the A's), and now Calero pitching incredible to get us to Street (after our half of the 8th of course).  Now, lets close this out and prove ourselves as the hottest team in the majors!
Takin' It to the Street
One more inning and this game is another win in the streak.
did u see that?
dye tried to be chavy for a second there :)
well...
dye is a good fielder...
i can't concentrate on AN anymore...
since the women's volleyball ads went up. the scroll bar just sticks as soon as those show up and I can't read anything else...
<homer simpson sing song voice>Maaarge....I've been watching women's volleyball on TV tonight...</homer voice>

now where's the post button...

ummm... go a's

Why take it to the streets?
When we can probably keep Kiko Calero in for another cool inning?
nah
i'd go with street
will kendall
EVER hit a HR? In all seriousness, in this season? Even by accident?
i dont think so
he chokes up to try and get on base all the time. he doesnt need to try and power the ball. he could in pitt, because it didnt matter, they were going to lose anyway.
yes, but only by accident
:)
he'll hit one
and be like "well, damn, didnt mean for THAT to happen."
nono...
He'll hit one, watch it like Bonds does for like a minute while doing a Boone bat flip.  He'll then pump his fist in the air, jump up and down, and shake the hand of every infielder on the way around the bases.  Once he gets to home plate, he'll do a two footed jump onto the plate into a crowd of his teammates waiting to mob him.  Mind you this will be the 5th inning of a blowout.
hey now...that was a nice double...
gives us a chance to tack one more on!
they just showed melhuse
in the dugout, whittling the handle of a bat. by the next time he needs to use it, he'll have a nice hardwood toothpick...
haha, yeah...
i feel bad for the kid.  He could really be productive with some real playing time.  But no, he is reduced to taking up woodworking.
he's not exactly a kid...
he's one of the oldest A's, he's 33. (march 1972)
Calero amazing
I know that you're not supposed to play the game where you remove one or two bad outings.  But with Calero I feel it is warranted, given that he had two outings where he gave up 9 runs while pitching injured.

So...if you discount those two as being due to injury, Calero has had an ERA of under 1.00.  And I think that is much closer to his ability than his 5-something ERA now shows.

I agree
and would hope anyone judging the guy's performance this season would take his injury into consideration.

He hasn't just been "okay" like I've heard some say. He's been lights out.

i totally agree
if only every player would suck over just 2 innings and have a sub-1 era the rest of the time...
Nice At Bat
Now Chavy's Up.
Come on Chavy
Those are big runs out there
My GAWD!
Ozzie Guillen is playing this like it's the 8th game of the World Series or something!

Wait, I got that wrong didn't I? Oops! The 8th game of the World Cup.

Go Hotties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Cindi

and what's wrong with the world cup?
wow! 10 walks, 6 hits. patience pays.
someone tell joe morgan!
Neal Cotts
Funny name. Sounds like "I got a bad case of the nealcotts!"
c'mon chavey, put this one away!!
Hey
Didn't we trade Cotts to the ChiSox in the Foulke deal?
yep
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/neal_cotts.shtml
if we can get to the bullpen...
I like our odds against the "best team in baseball"
right on!! and we're adding to the pen with a
submariner coming back from the DL!!
chavvy and kotsay
are the only A's without walks
Chavy's foul ball
just slammed a giant hole in the middle of the suite 37 window.
haha, that was pretty friggin awesome!
SMASH!
Chavy's going to have to pay for that! :P
a chavvy foul ball
just busted a huge hole in the window of a suite there!
That's another leak for the Coliseum...
ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
whew
ouch
bases loaded now.

what's with the chisox and hitting chavvy?!

Hey Now!
Bad, bad pitch.
Reminds me of
Damaso Marte's heat seeker...I hope he's OK.
NOOOOOO.
There goes the save.
I mean...
Hatteberg, you should have at least gone for that grand slam! Geez ;)
lol
I'm not sure if it's good or bad that I'm a little sad when the A's get more runs. But, dang these 6-2 scores, I want Street to get a save!! :)
Silly Huston
No save for you.
THERE'S your game-breaker!
WOOOT!!!!!!!!
Hatty with a two run single to RF... i love these guys
YEAH!! ALRIGHT HATTE!!!
Now that's some insurance!  Who's needs save opportunities anyways?  They're overrated and only cause ulcers :)
My fantasy team
needs saves, kthx.
I have Huston too...
but I'll be happy with the scoreless inning.  :D
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Dad!
n/t
as happy as i am to see that
will huston street EVER get me a save for my fantasy team?
i'm in the same situation...
i love the ERA, K's, WHIP, and BAA, but i wish he had more saves... it's still paying off like crazy that i picked him up on opening day in my fantasy league. 1st place feels good. especially with the A's haters in my league...
I'm all for winning streaks
But honestly, these 6-2 scores are getting boring.

Oh, who am I kidding...as long as we're on the right end of these things, who cares?

Just call us
the 6 to 2 A's
Can you intentionally walk a baserunner
and then bring in your closer? ;)
i hope so
man, i'm hurting in the saves department. the a's are either too atrocious to win any games or too good to make it close!
Sweet
Hatteberg & Associates Insurance Co.
"A...
... very, very ugly night for the Sox.  And that's to be expected that this Coliseum.  Every thing that can go wrong will out here."
--Sox TV announcers

 :)

How about,..
"Knock him out" just before the last strike.
Alright boys...lets close this puppy out :D
Its part of Hatte's transition to management
Saves artificially increase a closer's value, so opportunities should only be allowed when the closer is about to be traded.
haha, that makes perfect sense!
The ChiSox
have been good this year mainly because they have power.  The Netwerk A's Mausoleum is a pitcher's park.  The rest of this series ought to also go very well....
So what's Street's entrance music?
Judging by what I've seen here, you'd think it should be "My First, My Last, My Everything" by Barry White or something... :)
holy crap
that was the prettiest reverse k ever
I think Street should not be used
in this situation, to be honest. If you have a guy as your closer, he should be used to save games. If the A's are leading with one, two or three runs tomorrow, are you going to bring Street out for the third day in a row? What about Sunday?
yeah, but...
he was our only warm guy (Yabu wasnt ready)...and we have the Duke ready to go tomorrow.  We'll be fine.
Did anyone already report ?
Kenny Rogers suspended for 20 games
at least 2 diaries
and IMHO, it's not enough.
sorry - only just got home
it's cool
i just saw that what i typed was vague... what i meant, was that there were a couple diaries, and i think the suspension and fine was not enough. that could have been misinterpreted.
s'ok
that was how I interpreted it (I guessed you weren't calling for more diaries on the subject). I just came straight to the game thread and didn'tr scan the diaries.
that was too close
no more warning track shots, ok?
That was scary
For a split second I thought that ball was going home.
ok...
PLEASE K everett to end the game...
Street:
10 pitches, all strikes. Gorgeous.
Gorgeous
Huston or his pitches?  What the heck both!
All the Giants
needed was a big butt whoopin to get them to win 4 straight and take a game against the division leaders, the San Diego Padres? :/
HELLS YEA!
i love it.
LOL... announcers
"Get on out of there."   -- Sox announcers

He had a full second to stand there and wait for it to fall into his glove.

sorry boys...
no Old Style in the Coliseum.  see ya...
VICTORY!!!
A GREAT start to the holiday weekend!!!
How about our bullpen?
Our starters have been getting credit, but I think our bullpen is working on a 15+ inning scoreless streak.
Is it just me
or do we look more like a "team" every day?
Oh Baby!
"Everything has been a strike [in the 9th]." --Sox announcers, just before the third strike.

Very satisfying game!

CELEBRATE!!!
WOOOOOO!!!  So much for the "best team in baseball."  The A's are now one game below .500 and keep pace with Texas and Anaheim who won today.  Wins are sweet, and we did awesome taking advantage of all those walks :)
Keep up with LA and Texas, yes.....
and gaining a game on the Yankees and Orioles!
Carl Everett
He gone!

You can put it on the boooaaard! Yes!

that was a ridiculous inning
no balls. oh, how we love huston street.

i love seeing kendall give street congrats after the game. today he was squeezing his neck a little, really makes you think he sees huston as like a little brother.

I think
they should interview Street post-game one of these days. Nice game for the A's, good win for the 8th in a row. Again, love the annoying patience. (Meche is gonna regret saying that, but it's so true! ;))
everyone
check out sportscenter, they just had a teaser, highlights from oak-chi after the commercial.

rare espn coverage! wow!

It only took 8 in a row?
That was quick
Thanks for the heads up about that! It was the first highlight of the night - barely turned on the TV again in time. They breezed through the A's records for the past three months, including a clip of Zito looking depressed for May, then talked a bit about the walks that scored runs tonight.
it was quick
but it's sportscenter, not baseball tonight. most game wrapups are quick. the cardinals got about 8 seconds.
Well I was hoping that
Kiko Calero and Huston Street's fantastic outings or that even Harden's return would be mentioned, but nope.
Huston, we don't have a problem!
Street made those last three batters look ridiculous! Calero's da man because now we've got the Duke of Hurl for Saarloos tomorrow, bring in Rincon, then bring in Street to make them look like little leaguers again. We could be well above .500 by allstar break. Nice.
Poor M's!
Look at the open game thread for tonight's contest against the Rangers: here

Read those last four or five comments.  These guys have it totally rough.  All I can say is that people on AN weren't throwing in the towel like that in May.  Of course, we knew than that our team wasn't showing it's true colors.  M's fans know that their team isn't in a funk - they really are this bad.
