Here's a little known player that I'd like the A's to take in a late-round pick:
Chris Rahl played for William and Mary this year. Scouts have compared him to Kotsay, which I think is a pretty good comparison.
My wife and I watched him play a couple weeks ago and I was pretty impressed. He has a nice swing and hits well to the gaps. He's also fairly patient(.380 OBP) and, like Kotsay, plays great defense.
...doesn't think Trevor Crowe will fall to the A's. THey predict SS cliff pennington (hmmm, do we really need a shortstop. he could probably be moved), with us taking HS OF John Drennen in the supplemental round.
Cliff Pennington and John Drennen, thast definitely a steal. Seriously. There are a few pitchers i'm hoping the A's take. Either Jacob Marceuax from Mcneese State, or Lance Broadway from whats it called, TCU.
I've all of a sudden started to like Pennington, i think he'd be a nice future lead off hitter.
I'm still holding out hope that he falls to the A's at 21. The A's need pitching. We are loaded with hitters in the minors. if not Carillo then Torra just to screw with the Red Sox. :)
but both Chavvy and Ellis were SS and they got moved by the A's. I saw Mark play ball in Legion ball when he lived in Rapid City and everyone said he was a pure SS.
is just a way of describing the kind of defensive infielder the guy is. If the A's were to require a move to 2b, he may not hesitate. Now if that's the case, do the A's take Jed Lowrie, (2b, Stanford) as the supplemental pick if he's still available?
announcer that completely bothers me, especially when he covers an A's game. It's mainly that he doesn't appear to know the A's, consistently gets their names wrong, and doesn't appear too interested in the game.
about an announcing team that's UNBELIVABLY ANNOYING? Look right HERE! at the ESPN Sunday Night Football team!
There's Joe Theismann. He's smarter than EVERYONE -- JUST ASK HIM! And Paul Maguire, who can put any ordinary play into slow motion and torture you - TORTURE YOU - with the unbelivable nature of it all! We'll even miss the next play since we had to keep showing you the LAST UNSPEAKABLY GREAT PLAY!
And don't get me started about what they think of Ray "God's Own Linebacker" Lewis...
I don't know if any of you saw it or not, but the draftcaster, I think is more or less realtime. It's a java applet that's got some limited information on each guy.
no Jeremy Brown here; Mel Kiper would approve of this as a good value pick.
He does look like Byrnes, but he doesn't sound like him, as he apparently has a "knack for getting on base" as opposed to a "knack for running through walls."
ASU starting to feel guilty about their nickname? Why the Sun Angel Foundation...
i bet that cleveland has done some homework on these guys as well. they usually have a good minors system and are keeping their budget lower and are trying to count on the minors feeding the system.
Presumably he's two years away from the bigs, but not much more.
In 2 years.........
The A's may not have resolved their 2B situation long-term;
The A's may not be in Oakland, or will be leveraged for a new ballpark, and thus payroll could be lower or higher than it is now. If higher maybe they have the luxury of carrying this guy as a backup in 2007. If lower maybe Crosby won't be affordable much longer and he'll be groomed to replace him;
Eric Chavez-- Billy beane's protestations to the contrary-- might not be here anymore, thus freeing up someone for a move to 3B;
Or, most likely, pennington will be a great bargaining chip to get a player necessary for a late season pennant move in 2006 or possibly 2007;
maybe this guy would have been a first rounder pre-moneyball. Time to adapt! Obviously the A's feel the risk is worth the potential rewards at this pick.
5. Flower Mound (Flower Mound, Texas)
Last Year's Record: 37-8
Outlook: Seniors Craig Italiano, Brandon Gaviglio, Jordan Meaker and Paul Kelly give Flower Mound arguably the nation's top pitching staff. Italiano, a TCU recruit, is rated the nation's No. 38 overall prospect by SchoolSports.com. The right-hander's fastball has been clocked as high as 98 mph. Gaviglio, a left-hander and Oklahoma State recruit, carried an 18-1 career record into this season. TCU recruit Kelly, who had 10 saves as the team's closer last year, is also the team's best hitter. Flower Mound would like to avenge last year's loss in the Class 5A state final to this year's preseason No. 2, Moody
Scout's view: "He's a power guy with flashes of pitchability. He's one of a handful of high school right-handers who should go off in the first round."
Italiano throws 98 and he's just in HS, and Lansford has nice numbers and is Carneys son. I don't think this has anything to do with Beane shifting everyeons attention away from HS pitching or anything like that.
It's simple: There just weren't that many good college arms, they were all gone by the time 36 came around. This draft was FULL of high school talent, and Billy got two he thought it was worht taking a flier on. I got criticized over on Minor League Balll for taking two high school pitchers in the seconod round. Look! Beane did it also!
#21 - Cliff Pennington - SS - Texas A&M
#36 - Travis Buck - OF - Arizona State
#53 - Thomas Italiano - RHP - Flower Mound HS Texas
#69 - Jared Lansford - RHP - St Francis HS California (son of Carney)
In addition to being carney's good and committing to play at schott's alma mater, Jared Lansford goes to and plays for Saint Francis High School- Byrnes's old high school.
"Steve (NJ): The A's have drafted two HS pitchers with their first 4 picks. WTF?
Rob Neyer: (2:56 PM ET ) Wow. When everybody else zigs, Billy Beane zags. It's the sort of thing he'd do just to mess with our heads. And I think it's working. "
Is that the our rotation is good for close to the next 5-6 years. We wont need them to fast track to the Bigs like we did with Hudson, Zito, Mulder, etc.
In the 4 years it will take them to learn to pitch we will still have 2 years to let them grow into true starters.
Beane hated HS pitchers because he needed guys to step in right away and because they were such gambles. Now he can afford to wait an be patient with them. Makes plenty of sense.
It is against almost all logic to take high school pitchers so high. Why? Not a fast
financial return It takes too long to reach the majors. To high of a risk. The body is not mature and the chance of injury is great. They have much further to go to develop than college pitchers.
Given that, why did Beane draft them? Two considerations. First, he did not think much of the available college pitchers and second, he is relatively happy with the position players in the A's system. He was therefore more willing to take the higher risk on high school arms.
Pennington's best attribute is his makeup. Scouts have loved Pennington's grit and energy since he was in high school, and he won the Cape Cod League's 10th player award for his spirited play last summer. Pennington is more than just a gamer, however, offering tools across the board. He can bat at the top of a lineup, making consistent contact and providing gap power from both sides of the plate. He doesn't have blazing speed, but he runs well and his instincts make him a threat on the bases. Pennington's savvy also enhances his range at shortstop, where he can make both the routine and acrobatic plays. He has an above-average arm, a quick release and the ability to make throws from any angle.
I need to go now, someone else can take over doing the draft list if they want, i think from this point out only the a's picks are interesting, so do as you wish... i'm out... later everyone... i wonder if we'll take any more HS kids... BB sure knows how to make people wonder...
Where has our philosophy of drafting college players gone? We've used 3 out of 5 picks on High Schooler's. High School pitchers to be more specific. Didn't Beane say in Moneyball that there was too great of a risk in drafting HS pitchers?
when good prospects fall, it's ok to take on a bit extra risk because of the rewards are great. also, scroll up to what ChavyGoldX4 said. Makes a lot of sense.
the pendelum has swung. That's what people don't get about Moneyball. It does not advocate any specific baseball philosophies at all. Does it advocate OBP? Nope. College pitchers? Nope. Not stealing? Nope. Moneyball is an economic philosophy based on extracting maximum value by using statistical analysis to find and take advantage of market inefficiencies. Just like happened with OBP, other teams have caught up with the idea that HS pitchers were overvalued (and perhaps come to undervalue them). Rany did an excellent study on this recently in BP, which showed that, over the years, the difference between drafting HS and College players has shrunk to nearly nothing.
That's what seperates the brilliant from the smart. Having the ability to recognize that yesterday's truths aren't the same as tomorrow's and the creativity to constantly adapt to a changing world are what will consistently keep the Billy Beanes of the world ahead of the Joe Margans - in baseball, in business, and in life.
Moneyball was a bus. / econ. book. Only BB takes those ideas and tosses them on a baseball diamond. Look at GM right now, bleeding from the pocketbook. To completely over simplify, they are cutting jobs while other car makers gain in market share. They forgot that when gas hits high levels.. people dont want fat SUVs.
Bonderman was a great pick and his biggest mistake was trading him.
Maybe he saw 4 Bondermans out there. If so, LOOK OUT!!!!
Also, his new ownership group ranks #3 in MLB as far as how rich they are.
Perhaps with the new stadium deal nearing completion and deeper pockets he went out and got the kids he wanted and now he will use Wolff and Fischer's money to sign them!!!
Mark this day, AN, this is going to be a huge day 3 years from now!!!
Maybe Billy is changing his philosophy now that he has more time to develop young pitchers, where before he had to rush things. Seems like he's done well so far, so nobody panic!
I think Moneyball was never a set way of looking at baseball it was all about finding inefficiencies in the market. It appears that more and more teams are drafting college players these days. As that happens college players become overvalued and high schoolers become undervalued. I don't think Beane has changed his philosophy, I think the market has changed.
Yes, we're changing philosophy, but the underlying idea behind moneyball remains the same--> exploiting opportunities and inefficiencies. College is hyped, so we pick HS.
Hopefully all of these HS players we picked will sign, it would be interesting to follow them in the upcomming years. Also, its funny that the Giants still haven't picked one player yet.
To be fair, they are built on free agency and lean on vets. The problem is, their vets. seem to be from the Civil War. Bonds, Benitez, Jason Schmidt.. ect. have all broken down. By the way, I remember the Giants fans / radio / manager / ect. saying how great it was that Schmidt threw 120+ pitches per game. Hmm.. I wonder why some people thought they were asking for injuries? Then their approach to finding a closer is strange. But, its their team.
Won't matter once Barry's 'doctor' puts them on the 'fitness regimen'. They'll be hitting 40 HRs a year and grunting like stallions, while MLB says their testing has come up negative.
Apparently, the kid is a big Yankees' Fan. I don't expect him to honor his full-ride @ St. John's after reading this comment...
---------------------------------
And Mazzaro's favorite subject?
"You'll laugh at me for saying this, but gym is my favorite," Mazzaro said. "It's just a chance to relax and play sports with my friends without any pressure."
(Mazzaro accepted a scholarship to go to St. Johns, while Lansford might go to Santa Clara), do the A's basically lose them, without any signing dibs later on? My understanding is that teams can't trade draftees until a year later, so would they lose on the trade chip as well?
because if we don't sign them, then they redraft, right? If a team were to draft 10 guys just to not sign them so that they could get more picks the next year would be cheap.
of these HSers....for a guy who wishes he went to college instead of playing pro ball,beane really can't talk these guys out of attending college. in fact, i wish they'd ALL go to college...but that is my opinion.
We're always looking for better ways to evaluate talent," Kubota said. "There are a lot of teams that do things similar to how we do things, which in turn may open up opportunities in other areas. There might come a time when the whole paradigm is shifted and maybe college players are overvalued, instead of high school players being overvalued."
with their first 7 picks the A's choose only 3 college players (2 position, one pitcher) and 4 high school pitchers, at least two of whom have college scholarships. I can't imagine that the A's would cavalierly waste draft picks, so there's obviously more to the story.

All of the High Schoolers taken were born in 1986. Meaning, they all turn 19 this year. In fact, Justin Sellers is currently 19 years of age, and still in High School.
Bunch, a 6-5, 210-pound catcher, was a First Team All-CIF selection last year at Serrano High School in Victorville. He led the Diamondbacks in every offensive category, hitting .548 with 34 hits, seven home runs, and 27 runs batted in while slugging 1.065 and scoring a team-high 33 runs. UCR Head Coach Doug Smith likes Bunch's versatility, saying that, "Kevin is one of the top catchers in California. He has shown the ability to hit for average and power. He will also be used as a pitcher due to his strong arm."
or he is doing some weird stat/equation/# thing about HS RHP that only really intelligent people (not me) understand.
The best I can tell is that the law of avg says 1/5 HS RHP will be great. So, he could be banking on that but I'll wait for the interview to find out the real answer.
Theo, Depo and the rest are going nuts right now!!
Billy Beane has cornered the market on the pitching for the 2006-08 drafts!!! If he signs these kids with Wolff and Fischer's moolah, they should be primed for our move into a new stadium and help provide depth for our 2008-2009 teams.
THIS YEAR: One of the Cougars' top pitchers, junior college transfer Jason Ray will be at the top of the rotation ... Is a frontline starter ... Is a physical presence with excellent velocity ... Has the ability to change speeds ... Has only been pitching for one year, but is making rapid development and improvement. SAN DIEGO CITY: Played 2 seasons at San Diego City College for head coach Chris Brown ... Made a transition to the mound as a 2004 sophomore and appeared in 11 games, starting 3 ... Was 3-2 with a 5.20 ERA ... Had 32 strikeouts in 36 innings ... Played in 39 games as an outfielder as a 2003 freshman ... Hit .338 (53-for-157) with 33 runs and 25 RBIs ... Had 8 doubles and 3 home runs. HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped 2 varsity seasons at Piedra Vista High in Farmington, N.M., for head coach Dick Laughlin ... Led the Panthers to the state championship game as a 2002 senior ... Named all-conference as a junior. PERSONAL: Born July 14, 1984, in New Mexico, to Sam and Debbie Ray ... Has one brother (John), who is on this year's Cougar squad ... Majoring in physical education.
No e-mail, I logged on this afternoon and saw that it was gone...I knew the diary was in trouble when Nico's first post as an official AN writer was to put it down...but I thought it was funny that a recommended diary got deleted. Any idea when it got taken down?
using all the foolish barbs and misconceptions used by people and "experts" who know nothing about beane, the a's or even AN for that matter. some of it was kinda raw...but it was pretty funny though. he was trying to be a troll...having some fun is all.
...which were meant to poke fun on a few levels...
first, that people who make real posts like that are always homophobic. second, because billy beane has often been confused with billy bean, either just due to a spelling error or actually thinking that they are the same person...
the draft is going much slower than years past. apart from the time in the first five rounds, and then all the issues with the "button" (anyone wanna explain that?) ... it's 3, and it's only the 11th round. usually we'd be done with day 1 by now.
There are going to be some pretty pissed off young pitchers in this organization. I can feel the anxiety building for anyone who doesn't have a 92-98 MPH fastball and BB-K rate of 1-3!!!
they've been national champs for their division for a number of years. I saw their #4 or #5 starter and he dominated for 7 innings before we (BYU, who led the nation in slugging percentage) got to them in the 8th. An impressive outing, for sure.
And I think this guy was even better statistically than the guy I saw.
Or Ariel Prieto?

True...
but both Chavvy and Ellis were SS and they got moved by the A's. I saw Mark play ball in Legion ball when he lived in Rapid City and everyone said he was a pure SS.lansfords1 - June 7, 2005

I agree that the "pure SS" thing ...
is just a way of describing the kind of defensive infielder the guy is. If the A's were to require a move to 2b, he may not hesitate. Now if that's the case, do the A's take Jed Lowrie, (2b, Stanford) as the supplemental pick if he's still available?gojohn10 - June 7, 2005

it usualy means that the player was a low draft HS player, then decided to go to college instead.Zonis - June 7, 2005
occasionally it's a player
who was drafted, but the team that drafted him was unable to sign him, and he goes into the draft again.I believe the A's drafted, but couldn't sign, a player from last year's draft. I forget his name -- he's supposed to go back into the draft.

why pick a SS??
Pennington turns 21 next week.Presumably he's two years away from the bigs, but not much more.
In 2 years.........
The A's may not have resolved their 2B situation long-term;
The A's may not be in Oakland, or will be leveraged for a new ballpark, and thus payroll could be lower or higher than it is now. If higher maybe they have the luxury of carrying this guy as a backup in 2007. If lower maybe Crosby won't be affordable much longer and he'll be groomed to replace him;
Eric Chavez-- Billy beane's protestations to the contrary-- might not be here anymore, thus freeing up someone for a move to 3B;
Or, most likely, pennington will be a great bargaining chip to get a player necessary for a late season pennant move in 2006 or possibly 2007;

Gaviglio, a left-hander and Oklahoma State recruit, carried an 18-1 career record into this season. TCU recruit Kelly, who had 10 saves as the team's closer last year, is also the team's best hitter. Scout's view: "He's a power guy with flashes of pitchability. He's one of a handful of high school right-handers who should go off in the first round."gojohn10 - June 7, 2005
It's Ok Guys
Italiano throws 98 and he's just in HS, and Lansford has nice numbers and is Carneys son. I don't think this has anything to do with Beane shifting everyeons attention away from HS pitching or anything like that.It's simple: There just weren't that many good college arms, they were all gone by the time 36 came around. This draft was FULL of high school talent, and Billy got two he thought it was worht taking a flier on. I got criticized over on Minor League Balll for taking two high school pitchers in the seconod round. Look! Beane did it also!

BB is stocking up on HS pitching prospects
You know they won't all pitch for the A's. but I'll bet more than one will prove to be a valuable trading chipOaklandSi - June 7, 2005
Reason for the HS pitchers
Is that the our rotation is good for close to the next 5-6 years. We wont need them to fast track to the Bigs like we did with Hudson, Zito, Mulder, etc.In the 4 years it will take them to learn to pitch we will still have 2 years to let them grow into true starters.
Beane hated HS pitchers because he needed guys to step in right away and because they were such gambles. Now he can afford to wait an be patient with them. Makes plenty of sense.
ChavyGoldX4 - June 7, 2005
High School Pitchers
It is against almost all logic to take high school pitchers so high. Why? Not a fastfinancial return It takes too long to reach the majors.

Baseball America on Pennington
21. Athletics: Cliff Pennington, ss, Texas A&MPennington's best attribute is his makeup.

Who kidnapped Beane?
Where has our philosophy of drafting college players gone? We've used 3 out of 5 picks on High Schooler's. High School pitchers to be more specific. Didn't Beane say in Moneyball that there was too great of a risk in drafting HS pitchers?FlagsFlyForever - June 7, 2005
risk vs. reward
when good prospects fall, it's ok to take on a bit extra risk because of the rewards are great. also, scroll up to what ChavyGoldX4 said. Makes a lot of sense.gojohn10 - June 7, 2005
Risk/reward
the pendelum has swung. Rany did an excellent study on this recently in BP, which showed that, over the years, the difference between drafting HS and College players has shrunk to nearly nothing.That's what seperates the brilliant from the smart. Having the ability to recognize that yesterday's truths aren't the same as tomorrow's and the creativity to constantly adapt to a changing world are what will consistently keep the Billy Beanes of the world ahead of the Joe Margans - in baseball, in business, and in life.
devo - June 7, 2005
Thank You
Moneyball was a bus. / econ. book. Only BB takes those ideas and tosses them on a baseball diamond. Look at GM right now, bleeding from the pocketbook. To completely over simplify, they are cutting jobs while other car makers gain in market share. They forgot that when gas hits high levels.. people dont want fat SUVs.Parklife - June 7, 2005
They also...
failed to see that gas prices would rise to the point of hurting SUV sales.That's the real issue -- failing to understand changing market conditions.

Moneyball is obviously yesterdays news

I wouldn't say Moneyball is gone
I think Moneyball was never a set way of looking at baseball it was all about finding inefficiencies in the market. It appears that more and more teams are drafting college players these days. As that happens college players become overvalued and high schoolers become undervalued. I don't think Beane has changed his philosophy, I think the market has changed.mpfunk - June 7, 2005
beat me to the punch
gojohn10 - June 7, 2005

Haha.. Dumb Giants
But, its their team.Parklife - June 7, 2005

We're always looking for better ways to evaluate talent," Kubota said. "There are a lot of teams that do things similar to how we do things, which in turn may open up opportunities in other areas. There might come a time when the whole paradigm is shifted and maybe college players are overvalued, instead of high school players being overvalued."theblackpearl - June 7, 2005

this year's draft was weak. the '06 draft looks to be much higher in value.bigelephant - June 7, 2005
that must be part of the explanation
with their first 7 picks the A's choose only 3 college players (2 position, one pitcher) and 4 high school pitchers, at least two of whom have college scholarships. I can't imagine that the A's would cavalierly waste draft picks, so there's obviously more to the story.OaklandSi - June 7, 2005
