that Macha's choice to leave Blanton out for the eighth is a bad one. I think part of the reason Mulder broke down toward the end of last season (besides his mental issues) was being left out too long earlier in the year.
It'd be different if half the pen wasn't well rested now.
Blanton didn't have any high-stress, high pitch-count innings. That can often play a bigger role in fatigue than the pure number of pitches or innings.
That's not bad. I believe he only had 89 after the 7th inning and he wasn't struggling at all. The bullpen was ready if he got in any trouble. Let Smokin Joe enjoy his success and raise his confidence level.
He was at only 89 pitches after 7. He had just retired 10 batters in a row. Give the pen a little rest-- there will be a day soon when they'll thank Macha for it.
Though the way this staff is going we can start to seriously consider only going with 6 relievers from here on out:
Street
calero
Duke
Rincon
Then a choice between yabu, Chadford and Flores-- pick 2.
"Though the way this staff is going we can start to seriously consider only going with 6 relievers from here on out"

Awww Duke
salb918 - June 29, 2005
remember last wednesday?
Our bullpen was SHOT.Pretty much since then, they haven't seen the mound.
baseballgirl - June 29, 2005
I've still got to say
that Macha's choice to leave Blanton out for the eighth is a bad one. I think part of the reason Mulder broke down toward the end of last season (besides his mental issues) was being left out too long earlier in the year. It'd be different if half the pen wasn't well rested now.
Tyler Bleszinski - June 29, 2005
Remember Blez
Blanton didn't have any high-stress, high pitch-count innings. That can often play a bigger role in fatigue than the pure number of pitches or innings.salb918 - June 29, 2005
Extra rest due all star break
He may also be thinking that Blanton will be getting a little extra rest due to the break.Donner - June 29, 2005
107 Pitches
That's not bad. I believe he only had 89 after the 7th inning and he wasn't struggling at all. The bullpen was ready if he got in any trouble. Let Smokin Joe enjoy his success and raise his confidence level.guapobob - June 29, 2005
Blez... are you serious??
He was at only 89 pitches after 7. He had just retired 10 batters in a row. Give the pen a little rest-- there will be a day soon when they'll thank Macha for it.Though the way this staff is going we can start to seriously consider only going with 6 relievers from here on out:
Street
calero
Duke
Rincon
Then a choice between yabu, Chadford and Flores-- pick 2.
oaktoon - June 29, 2005
no thanks
"Though the way this staff is going we can start to seriously consider only going with 6 relievers from here on out"have you no ability to see more than a week into the future?? do you think joe blanton and kirk saarloos is going to be in the running for the cy young this year?
