King Richard Harden with a 2-1 record and a 1.82 ERA goes against Kevin Brown with an 0-4 record and an 8.25 ERA.
The A's look to take the series from the Yankees today with their stopper on the mound.
The A's go with this lineup:
Kotsay
Kendall
Chavez
Hatteberg
Kielty
Durazo
Ginter
Byrnes
Scutaro
Hazy Shade of Ginter makes his way back into the lineup today. Again, I'd personally like to keep him in the lineup several games to see if he can get his swing on.
The Yankees counter with this lineup:
Jeter
Womack
Sheffield
Matsui
Rodriguez
Martinez
Posada
Giambi
Cano
LET'S GO A'S!!!

Interesting stuff
in Slusser's story: Chavy reiterated his willingness--and seeming desire--to move down in the order ("it's helped me before"), and Macha said he has no plans to move him. Starting to sound a little stubborn, Mach? Sometimes any little change is a good change just to break the pattern.Nico - May 8, 2005

Hah
Macha thinks that they should have not taken morning batting practice the first day due to the travel, the rough game the day before, the time change...and the grind of playing at Yankee stadium...."maybe not do that next time" DUH!ak_A - May 8, 2005

Why does Beane insist with this piece of dead weight that had ONE major league hit in his entire career? New promotion, we drop some unproductive schmuck to triple A (Thomas, Cruz) and we put a random fan on the roster for each home game. pinch hit for the Browns. Bill Veeck set it up as a publicity stunt.Nick - May 8, 2005
Eddie Gaedel
was a midget who had 1 AB (a walk, of course) for the St Louis Browns. That move was the brain child of Bill Veeck, the greatest promoter the game ever had, and certainly one of the best owners.
If you desperately need a laugh (happens often this season), the short story "You Could Look It Up" by James Thurber describes a similar sitiuation, but with more outrageous and delightful results.
sarajune13 - May 8, 2005
Is this ump
going to let Brown bounce a pitch for a called strike?Nick - May 8, 2005
Baseball is measured by averages
Sure Chavy is batting .197, but I trust history, and history tells us that he will bat near his historical average. If he hits .280 for most of the months he will have at least one monster month with an average over .420.A team should hit its average with RISP or with the bases full for that matter. If the A's have gone 4 for 33 with the bases loaded then they should have a streak where they go 14 for 33.
Imagine that! Chavy hitting .420 and the A's getting 14 hits with the bases loaded! History tells us this will happen. I beleive it will.
IT WILL BE A JOY TO WATCH! And its just a matter of time.

Hence why we really need to institute small ball
noava22 - May 8, 2005
Or hit a few
doubles or homers!Nick - May 8, 2005
We did institute small ball
we get tons of singles and walks, and occasionally we get a few in one inning. That doesn't score runs. You need to get people on, get them to scoring position, and drive them in. Getting a guy on, striking out, getting a walk and another single, then striking out looking twice with the bases loaded isn't gonna score any runs. I would like them to institute some big ball.God damnit. Stupid A Rod
RichardP - May 8, 2005

why not hit Kotsay #3?
at least try it. Chavie at #3 is killing our whole offense.jayho - May 8, 2005
I'm with ya
and we should bat him 2nd and clean-up at the same time, too. I'm pretty sure he'd be able to score from 2nd after he hits his 3rd consecutive single to open the game!Nick - May 8, 2005

Chavez swung at ball four
Chavez is just a guess hitter right nowTesty1212 - May 8, 2005
I'm glad he did
I like to see him swing the bat. Remember when he used to be a bad ball hitter? Remember when Chavy took a ball 4 inches off the ground and knocked it out of the park? I want to see him get back to that. He hit that ball decently well, and even when he catches a break and Sheffield falls down, he still ends up out.RichardP - May 8, 2005
That was a hit-and-run
his job is to swing at it if there's any chance it could be called a strike.Nick - May 8, 2005
You can't
get a whole lot unluckier than Ginter's liner and Sheffield being able to catch that. But I'm still waiting for Kendall to look less like he's desperately trying to make contact on a hit-and-run...on every at bat!
Nico - May 8, 2005

slump breakers...
Okay, the whole team needs to shave....this hair thing they got going ain't doin it for me...if you need to shave your head too, then do it - let's have a whole team of hudsons...it's obvious that the facial hair is slowing down your bat speed, your hand-eye coordination, and your running abilities. Come on guys!!!!*sigh*

A confession...
...I have really enjoyed listening to the YES broadcasts of these games.I feel dirty typing that! I can't help it! The announcers have been SO MUCH better than the usual Angels/White Sox crew I'm accustomed to.
baseballgirl - May 8, 2005
I agree...
They're one of the few things I like about the Yankees. One of the few opponent announcer groups that don't annoy the crap out of me. They're not the in-your-face flat-out cheerleading types like the White Sox announcers. And they're not duds like the Angels announcers.FormerHuntsvilleStar - May 8, 2005
agree
I live in YES country, and I greatly enjoy watching them. They obviously root for the Yankees, but they are somewhat professional about it.SeanR - May 8, 2005
i turned on the tv
and ray fosse sed, "and he pulled it into the right field bleachers to give the a's an early lead" i was soooo happy . i was jumping and pumping my fist then i saw the score 1-0 yankees. turns out foss was talkin about last year when chavez was actually good~!!!!OakLaNdAs4LiFe32 - May 8, 2005

I think we should sign Jose Canseco.
At least we're assured he'll always reach 1st base.sf drift king - May 8, 2005
We need to bring Rickey back
Hey, I just realized that we need to bring the old dude back for one more go-'round. He can teach this team how to play small ball (which, despite what billy says, they need to do) and he can put butts in the seats for his farewell tour while our team is still "growing". A half of season of Rickey, compared to the revenues...plus I'd love to see him retire in the green and gold. Let the man have a little diginity.noava22 - May 8, 2005
Yes!!!!
I've been waiting for A's pitchers to start drilling the opposition. Now if the Yanks retaliate perhaps that will fire up the A's offense.natsirt - May 8, 2005
IF the Yankees retaliate...
I think they we're happy to let Matsui drive in the runner moved to scoring position because of the hit by pitch. We just can't afford to allow the extra baserunners.

Brown showing he's worth every penny of his
$15 mil. salary today !!He's just throwing a wet blanket on a 'torrid' offense !!
A's lineup can't figure him out.
HerbWashington - May 8, 2005
besides
dont we have extra money with our new owners? cant we get some1 with potential to hit 27-28 homers?OakLaNdAs4LiFe32 - May 8, 2005
Not really
They want to run it like a business (read: turn a profit) and with decreased attendence, we'll be lucky to add someone. So, yes, they have money, but they aren't going to go into the red unless they are pretty darn sure itll bring another ws title to oakland.
noava22 - May 8, 2005
one fifth of the season is basically over and
we've already been shut out four times and possible five times after today. That's more than all of last season. Isn't that correct. That should be statistically significantTesty1212 - May 8, 2005
actually yesterday was 5th shutout
.... today will be six in 31 games.all last year, shut out total of 3 times.

OakLaNdAs4LiFe32 - May 8, 2005
I just read an article on the A's website.
Chavvy said he feels lost at the plate and sounded like he was pleading to be moved down in the order. Macha, however, doesn't want to change the lineup because he wants to show faith in the team. I think a lineup shake up would do them a world of good right now.NW Pachyderm - May 8, 2005
Hmmm...
I can see Macha not wanting to change the lineup as a way of showing faith in the team, but when someone on the team is requesting the change so that they can get out of their slump, I would think he would respect that....I say move him down a few spots....gigglingone - May 8, 2005

There's a difference
between a bad team and a team playing badly. We're a flawed but capable team playing badly--not as badly as this time 3 years ago when we finished with over 100 wins, but badly. This too shall pass.
Nico - May 8, 2005
Guillen.
Wheres Jose Guillen when you need him? Dang an outfielder with an amazing arm and understanding of where to throw the ball would be awesome to have. Not to mention he's hitting a mere .324 with 7hrs 19rbis which is more than any of our two corner outfielders combined...KMoAsFan - May 8, 2005
